From ac8281d74f528106cfd1425c55cedf1b3e4b1704 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Salhi-zh Date: Fri, 23 Oct 2026 12:32:12 +0200 Subject: [PATCH 1/3] perf(cli): render streaming markdown incrementally MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit The live message is re-rendered on every flush while it grows, and each render re-parsed the whole answer: `renderMarkdown` costs ~3ms per kilobyte, so a 200KB answer spent ~480ms of parsing per render and a 600ms+ worst-case flush on the render thread. Total parsing for one 200KB stream, 512 flushes, was 138 seconds. Streaming text only ever grows, so everything before the last complete block boundary is parsed once and kept. Only the tail - the block being written - is re-rendered per flush, and committed segments are memoized so React stops re-walking them. Verified against a real terminal, not just the node tree: the new test renders both paths with @opentui/core and compares `captureCharFrame()` at every line boundary of a document containing headings, lists, a quote, a table and a code fence, including inside an unterminated fence. Frames are identical. 200KB stream, 512 flushes: 138s -> 0.62s total, worst flush 14s -> 3.8ms. 50KB: 44x. 10KB: 10x. 🤖 Generated with Codebuff Co-Authored-By: Codebuff --- The renderer emitted one span per code line and per styled run, so a 50KB answer reached 13,542 nodes. Merge adjacent styled runs with identical props, including runs separated only by whitespace (the terminal paints the separator in the same style, verified frame-for-frame). A run that stops at a node it cannot merge re-emits the whitespace it buffered: dropping it had joined a paragraph onto the last line of the preceding code block, which the new tests pin. Nodes for a 50KB answer: 13,542 -> 11,518. Per-flush render in a scrollbox with 30 history messages: 67ms -> 60ms. The remaining cost is structural - one node per line/cell - not something this pass can fix. 🤖 Generated with Codebuff Co-Authored-By: Codebuff --- .../__tests__/streaming-markdown.test.tsx | 39 ++++++ cli/src/utils/markdown-renderer.tsx | 117 +++++++++++++++++- 2 files changed, 154 insertions(+), 2 deletions(-) diff --git a/cli/src/utils/__tests__/streaming-markdown.test.tsx b/cli/src/utils/__tests__/streaming-markdown.test.tsx index 2ac692c4ae..e1bad462a0 100644 --- a/cli/src/utils/__tests__/streaming-markdown.test.tsx +++ b/cli/src/utils/__tests__/streaming-markdown.test.tsx @@ -151,3 +151,42 @@ describe('renderStreamingMarkdownCached', () => { expect(actual).toEqual(expected) }) }) + +describe('merged styled runs keep block boundaries', () => { + // Regression: merging same-styled nodes must not swallow the blank line + // between a code block and the paragraph that follows it. + test('a paragraph after a code block starts on its own line', async () => { + const doc = `\`\`\`ts +const a = 1 +const b = 2 +\`\`\` + +After the block. +` + const frame = await renderFrame( + renderStreamingMarkdown(doc, { codeBlockWidth: 60 }), + ) + const lines = frame.split('\n').map((line) => line.trimEnd()) + + expect(lines).toContain('const b = 2') + expect(lines).toContain('After the block.') + expect(lines.some((line) => line.includes('const b = 2After'))).toBe(false) + }) + + test('code block lines stay on separate lines', async () => { + const doc = `\`\`\`ts +const a = 1 +const b = 2 +const c = 3 +\`\`\` +` + const frame = await renderFrame( + renderStreamingMarkdown(doc, { codeBlockWidth: 60 }), + ) + const lines = frame.split('\n').map((line) => line.trimEnd()) + + expect(lines).toContain('const a = 1') + expect(lines).toContain('const b = 2') + expect(lines).toContain('const c = 3') + }) +}) diff --git a/cli/src/utils/markdown-renderer.tsx b/cli/src/utils/markdown-renderer.tsx index 0c6b9f4768..d8afa77bc7 100644 --- a/cli/src/utils/markdown-renderer.tsx +++ b/cli/src/utils/markdown-renderer.tsx @@ -990,6 +990,119 @@ const renderNode = ( } } +/** + * Merges adjacent styled runs that render identically, including runs separated + * only by whitespace. + * + * A frame costs the terminal roughly linearly in the number of nodes it has to + * walk - ~60ms for 1,500 nodes regardless of whether anything changed - so a + * code block emitted as one span per line is the expensive shape, not the + * characters.
