PirepStats(): airline/aircraft PAX & Cargo totals show VA-wide figures (whereNotIn scoping bug)

Summary

DB_StatServices::PirepStats($airline_id, $aircraft_id) reports VA-wide PAX and Cargo totals on every airline-detail / aircraft-detail page, instead of the figures for the selected airline/aircraft. All other stats (flights, time, distance, fuel, landing rate) are correctly scoped — only Total/Avg Passengers and Total/Avg Freight are wrong.

It's most obvious on a small operator: on our install a business-jet airline (6 accepted PIREPs, ~31 pax / ~993 kg total) showed 439,756 passengers and 33,932,376 kg freight — the totals of the whole VA.

Root cause

In Services/DB_StatServices.php, PirepStats():

$allpireps is the list of non-accepted PIREPs of this airline only. Using it as a whereNotIn blacklist therefore excludes just that handful of rows and still sums the fares of every other airline's accepted PIREPs. The scoping intent (airline/aircraft) is lost entirely for PAX/CGO.

Suggested fix

Switch from a blacklist to a whitelist of the in-scope accepted PIREPs and use whereIn:

The original < 65500 guard was a workaround for large whereNotIn lists; with a whitelist of accepted PIREPs it's no longer needed (a > 0 guard is enough to skip the work and avoid an empty IN ()).

Note: the global statistics page (PirepStats() with no args) keeps returning VA-wide totals, which is correct — when both $airline_id and $aircraft_id are null the whitelist is simply "all accepted PIREPs". ApiPirepStats() is global by design and unaffected.

Verified on phpVMS 7.x with DisposableBasic v3.7.4. Happy to open a PR if useful.

The guard for large number of pireps should still be applied and remain there, what will happen if a VA has more than 65k accepted pireps ?

An airline with around 200k pireps was the cause of that workaround :) We still need to consider that case too.

The problem with WhereIn(...) is the hard coded database limitation, MySQL can not handle more than 65k items in a WHERE ... IN clause, so in your suggested fix everything will work until the VA reaches that limit.

It can be less when you filter by airline or aircraft, but the whole stats (of the entire VA) will fail :(

You're absolutely right — thanks for the context on the 200k-pirep VA. My whereIn($accepted_ids) fix just inverts the problem: it keeps the scoping correct, but now the materialized list is the accepted pireps, which is exactly the large set for a big VA, so the unfiltered (whole-VA) stats would hit the same limit. Not a good general fix. 👍

The clean way to get both correctness and scalability is to not materialize the IDs in PHP at all — pass a query builder so Laravel emits a SQL subquery (WHERE pirep_id IN (SELECT id FROM pireps WHERE ...)), which the DB resolves without any IN-list size / packet limit:

That drops the count($allpireps) < 65500 guard entirely because nothing is ever loaded into PHP, and it works the same whether scoped by airline/aircraft or run for the whole VA.

Even tighter (one query, both types + sum & avg in a single pass via a JOIN):

Agreed the whereIn($ids_array) approach just moves the 65k wall instead of removing it. I ran the alternatives against a real install (≈3k accepted pireps, ≈8.8k fare rows) and the cleanest result is a single grouped JOIN done entirely in SQL — no id list ever materialised in PHP, so the MySQL IN (...) limit is irrelevant regardless of VA size, and it folds the previous 5 queries (sum+avg × pax/cgo + the id pluck) into 1.

Why this addresses your concern:

• No IN(...) limit, any VA size — the scope lives in the JOIN's WHERE, nothing is loaded into PHP, so the original count($pireps) < 65500 guard is no longer needed at all (works for the whole-VA case too).
• Correctly scoped — global, per-airline and per-aircraft all use the same JOIN; for the global call you just drop both when() filters.
• 1 query instead of 5, and the only join key (pirep_fares.pirep_id → pireps.id) is already indexed.

Numbers I verified (all methods identical):

• per-airline: pax/cgo matched to the unit on both sum and avg
• global: the JOIN gives the same totals as the old code minus fares that belonged to soft-deleted pireps (the old whereNotIn(state != ACCEPTED) blacklist let those through). So this is also slightly more correct.

EXPLAIN: scoped queries use idx_airline then the pirep_id index (ref, ~2 rows/pirep); the global query is a single full scan of pirep_fares + PK lookups — same cost class as before but in one round-trip.

I'm running this in production now and it's behaving well. Posting here rather than as a PR — feel free to take it as-is.

Correction to my previous comment — the JOIN snippet I posted needs one fix to actually run on a prefixed install, which I only caught by testing the real Eloquent query (not raw SQL):

Laravel applies the table prefix inside join()/where() identifiers, but NOT inside selectRaw(). So bare pirep_fares.type in the raw select resolves to the unprefixed name → Unknown column 'pirep_fares.type'. Using an alias doesn't help either (Laravel prefixes the alias too: pf → phpvmspf).

Working version — unprefixed names in join/where, real prefixed name in selectRaw:
