4.8.16: Subshell no longer works on FreeBSD

Hello,

With 4.8.15 the subshell functionality worked normally. Now with 4.8.16 it has broken and produces the following error:

Error
Not an xterm or Linux console;
the panels cannot be toggled.

I have looked at reverting a few of the subshell related commits to see if it solved them and the larger ones were not easily revertible and the small ones had no effect. I have not yet done a git bisect to identify the problematic commit.

Actually, that error happens when TERM=screen (from tmux)

When TERM is xterm it changes to the subshell but doesn't produce a prompt. Any keypress returns the user back to mc.

Is it still relevant with current master? We did some FreeBSD related fixing... otherwise, bisection would be most helpful.
