Overview
======================================================================

This simulator is intended to be a tool to help students (within academia or not; we're all students of life and seeking knowledge, right?) strengthen their intuition with regards to randomization in the context of randomized controlled trials (aka, field experiments).

#### The Basic World of this Simulator

This simulator constructs a simplified world with the following characteristics:

* A finite set of experimental subjects (you control how many)
* A "treatment" for which we want to detect the impact (you get to be omnipotent and specify the effect of the treatment as a percentage)
* A single covariate--represented by "color" (you control the number of levels)

#### Using the Simulator

The simulator is intended to simply follow the three steps at the top of this page:

1. [Create the Data Set](#create-the-data-set)—this is your opportunity to be omnipotent. You get to choose the data set size, the underlying treatment effect (pretend the actual treatment is whatever strikes your fancy!), the number of colors (the number of levels of the "heterogenius covariate"), and the extent to which color (as a covariate) is actually a predictor of the outcome that the treatment is looking to impact.

2. [Run a Single Simulation](#simulate-an-experiment)—run a single simulation that splits the population (randomly!) into treatment and control groups. You can then actually _see_ what each group looks like, as well as "blend" the covariate (the colors) to see how they actually pretty much even out. But, also, you can start to explore block randomization: the smaller the data set you created, the more you will see differences in the averaged color... _unless_ you randomize _within each color_. This is still randomizing, but it's a simplified example of _block_ randomization. This view also shows the observed effect for the simulation, so, if you run it multiple times, you can start to see how close the "experiment" approximates the true effect.

3. [Simulate Multiple Experiments](#simulate-multiple-experiments)—this is an extension of the previous step and focuses on the observed effects by simulating the experiment multiple times and showing how those results are distributed (the "sampling distribution"). This runs the simulations both _with_ block randomization and _without_ block randomization. The beauty of blocking: it will never _increase_ the sampling variability, but, if the covariate(s) being used for blocking are at all predictive of the outcome, it can _decrease_ the sampling variability, which means, in a _single_ experiment, blocking can tighten the range of your estimation of the effect of the treatment.

#### Accessing the Code / Providing Feedback

This simulator was developing using the R programming language (specifically, flexdashboards using Shiny). The code is available under an MIT License at https://github.com/SDITools/randomization-explorer. Feedback, bugs, and enhancement requests can be logged there as issues.
