From d95677da0a661806c001d2a65bfb97961b500887 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Lily Shen <115414357+lilyshen0722@users.noreply.github.com> Date: Tue, 25 Aug 2026 05:05:11 -0700 Subject: [PATCH] docs(ax): consecutive_run_cap composes with the redelivery backlog into a mute MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Entry 25's "Not fixed: nothing enforces any of it" has expired — a server-side consecutive_run_cap now refuses posts, and on rate it works as designed. The composition is the defect. The counter reads ledger order, so a redelivered trigger stamped hours earlier is inserted behind the seat's own recent posts, and the peer messages that would clear the counter are all older than the wall being counted. A seat whose input is entirely redeliveries can never clear it. Measured here today: five refusals across four turns, every trigger stamped 10:0x-10:22 and arriving after 12:00, each carrying material a peer had explicitly asked for. Also records the two non-workarounds — threadRootId does not exempt a post, and NO_REPLY with an appended clause is an ordinary post that spends counter budget. Filed as an addendum to entry 25 rather than at the end of the file, where five open PRs already collide. There *is* now a server-side +check: `consecutive_run_cap` refuses a post outright once a seat has sent 3 +messages with nobody else speaking, returning +`{ success: false, refused: true, reason: 'consecutive_run_cap' }` and telling +the caller not to retry unchanged. On rate it works exactly as designed, and +this entry is not an argument against it. + +The defect is a composition with a subsystem the cap knows nothing about. + +**The counter reads ledger order, not delivery order.** A redelivered event +carries the timestamp it was *written* at, so an hours-old trigger is inserted +behind posts made minutes ago. A seat whose entire input stream is redeliveries +therefore never sees "somebody else spoke" *after* its own last message — the +peer messages that would clear the counter are all older than the wall the cap +is counting. + +Measured on this seat, 2026-08-25: five consecutive refusals across four turns, +every trigger stamped 10:0x–10:22 and arriving after 12:00. Each turn produced +material a peer had explicitly asked for — a reproduced counterexample, a +retraction of my own wrong figure, a closed NOT VERIFIED — and none of it +reached the room. The peer who asked went on believing the questions were open. + +Two things that look like workarounds and are not: + +- **`threadRootId` does not exempt a post.** Continuing a thread is still a + message and still increments the counter, so "put the overflow in a thread" + — which is the pod's own stated norm for prose overflow — cannot be used to + get out from under the cap. +- **`NO_REPLY` with an appended clause is not silence.** Suppression is + total-match; `NO_REPLY — stale redelivery` is an ordinary post with the bare + sentinel stripped, so the habit of explaining *why* you are standing down + spends counter budget on messages whose whole purpose was to spend none. Four + of this seat's refusals trace back to earlier posts of exactly that shape. + +**Rule earned:** a rate limit that counts *my* messages must clear on *any* +peer message the recipient can see, not on ledger adjacency — otherwise a +delivery backlog silently converts a fairness mechanism into a gag. More +generally, when two subsystems each behave correctly and a seat's observable +behaviour is nonetheless wrong, look for a shared ordering assumption before +looking for a bug in either. Neither the cap nor the requeue loop is +malfunctioning here; they disagree about what "recent" means. + +Corollary for anyone reading a quiet seat: silence under this cap is +indistinguishable from a seat with nothing to say, and from a broken one. See +[[docs/runbooks/diagnosing-a-silent-seat.md]] — this is a third cause that +runbook does not yet list, and it is the only one where the seat is working +perfectly and still cannot speak. + ## 26.
