From 6e9cbda281c8d4b172fb5d16b8766414dd0afcba Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Jake Barnby Date: Mon, 5 Oct 2026 15:53:35 +1300 Subject: [PATCH 01/26] fix(tools): sanitize tool output with abnegate-secret zone_core kept its own copy of the terminal-control stripper that abnegate-secret 0.1.3 already publishes as sanitize and sanitize_owned, with the same redaction pass behind it. Two copies drift, and the published one has since closed gaps the local one still had: invisible formatting characters (zero-width, bidirectional overrides, tag characters) let a credential split by a zero-width space reach the transcript unredacted, two-byte escapes outside 0x40-0x5F and escapes with intermediate bytes such as ESC ( B left their tails behind, and the ESC X start-of-string leaked its payload. ToolResult and zone_notify now call the crate directly. zone_notify used zone_core for nothing else, so that dependency goes too. The new ToolResult tests pin each output change, and a read_file test pins the cost: file content reaches the model through ToolResult, so variation selectors and zero-width joiners and non-joiners are dropped from what it reads, though not from the file. Bumping now keeps that PR to the crate swap itself. rmcp 3.3 and 3.4 add ServerConfig/ClientConfig and negotiate_initialize, route peer cancellation by lifecycle and tighten HTTP transport validation; none of zone's call sites change and the negotiated protocol versions are the same. Routing cancellation by lifecycle means a stdio server's notifications/cancelled no longer fails zone's in-flight tools/call at once. The call is then bounded only by ToolContext::command_timeout, so a test now pins that a server which cancels and never answers ends in the timeout error rather than hanging. It fails against rmcp 3.2.0, where the call ended at once with the server's cancellation. dirs 7.0.0 only changes preference_dir on Windows, which zone never calls; the abnegate crates already pull 7.0.0, so zone_core now takes the workspace pin instead of repeating the version. When ComfyUI was too slow to answer the last poll in time, reqwest's own timeout fired first and the job failed with "error sending request for url (.../history/)" instead of "training timed out". Under load the in-flight poll is the usual place the deadline lands, which is how a_graph_that_never_finishes_times_out failed. Polls now keep their own five-second request timeout and the whole poll runs under timeout_at(deadline), so whichever of the deadline or a real request failure comes first is reported as what it is. cancel_and_wait bounds its polls the same way. The timeout tests now mount a ComfyUI that marks the prompt terminal once it is cancelled, so they assert the cancellation was confirmed and no longer spend thirty seconds polling a graph that never ends. Hold keeps its constructors but holds a Variables, and hands it out so a test can change more variables under the same lock. Variables::install sets a value a whole test binary shares under the same lock. Config's, vpn's, the run_command environment test, the local embedding cache test and the chat agent and handover suites change variables only through it. Safe set and remove over unsafe calls must not reach production, where worker threads read the environment without the lock, so variables and Hold compile only for zone_core's own tests and its new test-support feature, which zone_context and zone_server enable as dev-dependencies. The crate stays neutral about where SearXNG runs and starts switched off; zone keeps its own policy in services::search: the Gluetun query URL, search on unless SEARCH_ENABLE_WEB_SEARCH turns it off, and off while public web waits for the VPN (zone_core::vpn::allows_public, the same gate the old crate re-implemented). The seven VPN-gating tests move with it, changing the environment only under the Hold they already take. The crate reads the timeout from SEARCH_TIMEOUT_SECONDS. There is no fallback to SEARCH_TIMEOUT_SECS, and the config test pins that the old name no longer sets the timeout. The search observer now reports a typed Outcome, recorded under its stable label, which adds the disabled, decode_error and too_large statuses to zone_searxng_requests_total. Every result title, URL and snippet now passes through the crate's sanitizer, which redacts credential-shaped text such as a presigned URL's token before the model reads it; a web tool test pins that. The capability text names the search tool only generically, so the chat test now asserts that sentence and that an agent model is offered web_search. The published date never reaches the model. P1.** -`time_range` shipped in PR 3 and narrows the SearXNG request, but the date on the way back is discarded: `SearxngResult` in `runner/zone_search/src/client.rs` deserializes only `title`, `url` and `content`, `SearchHit` carries only those three, and `format_search_context` renders title, URL and snippet. SearXNG returns `publishedDate` for most engines, so this is thrown away rather than unavailable. Two consequences, both of which undercut what PR 3 just built. The model cannot tell whether a recency-narrowed search actually worked, because a `time_range: day` result set looks exactly like an unnarrowed one, so it cannot judge whether to narrow further or give up. And it cannot follow two rules the shipped prompt already gives it: "Time-sensitive answers need a source explicitly dated recently" has no date to read, and "Drop a source you are unsure of rather than hedge it" becomes a choice between dropping everything and dropping nothing. Carry `publishedDate` through `SearxngResult` into `SearchHit` and render it in `format_search_context`. +`time_range` shipped in PR 3 and narrows the SearXNG request, but the date on the way back is discarded: `Entry` in `abnegate-search` (abnegate/crates, `src/entry.rs`) deserializes only `title`, `url` and `content`, `SearchHit` carries only those three, and `format_search_context` renders title, URL and snippet. P1.** GK 758-765: cite only through IDs the tools returned (`[web:id]`, `[post:id]`, `[collection:id]`), placed after the final punctuation of the sentence or cell; structured-data tools are exempt. SOL 422-450: typed reference IDs shared by citations and rich UI; never write raw markdown links; one citation block per paragraph. CL 7728: claims in your own words, citation tags are attribution not permission to quote. Build: tag every `web_search`, `search_knowledge`, `read_document` and `search_chat_history` hit with a stable ID in the tool output, instruct the model to cite `[web:3]`, and resolve IDs server-side into `Citation` records in `citations.rs`, rejecting unknown IDs. Server-side resolution only closes the path it owns: the console renders assistant text through react-markdown, so a raw markdown link or a bare autolink in the reply reaches the user without ever passing the citation check. Carry SOL 449 into both halves. Prompt: never write a markdown link or a bare URL, cite by ID. Renderer: `MessageContent` rejects or de-links any anchor whose target does not resolve to a `Citation` on that message. Without the renderer half this item makes invented URLs look validated rather than making them impossible. `query_prometheus`, `get_build_status` and the other structured tools stay citation-exempt (GK 762). @@ -326,7 +326,7 @@ GK 29 allows disclosure on explicit request. Account mail keeps zone's wording in a new services::mail module: Template holds the two messages and AccountMail sends them through any abnegate_notify::Mail. mail::Config is the one reader of the SMTP_* variables for account mail and email notices alike, with the sender policy as the only difference, so the two can no longer drift. A value that is blank once trimmed counts as unset: docker-compose passes every SMTP_* variable through even when .env leaves it out, so a blank SMTP_FROM switched account mail off instead of falling back to the default sender, and a blank SMTP_HOST was logged as configured and then failed every send. SMTP_PASSWORD is the exception and is taken as given, because both readers accepted an empty one and a relay may too. An unreadable SMTP_PORT falls back to 587 with a warning for both, as notices already did; that delivered if the relay served 587 and failed otherwise, which beats switching account mail off. The auth handlers hand a message to a task of its own instead of awaiting it. A known address was answered a full SMTP session later than an unknown one, which told a caller which accounts exist, and a stalled relay held the request open until lettre's timeout. The token is stored either way, so a send that fails, is dropped because MAX_CONCURRENT_SENDS messages are already with the relay, or is cut off by shutdown is retried by asking again. The bound keeps the public, unthrottled endpoints from opening an SMTP session per request. Each send is also cut off after SEND_TIMEOUT: lettre's async transport bounds only the TCP connect, so a relay that stalls after it would hold a permit forever, and eight such stalls would switch account mail off until a restart. The state the server falls back to when the embedding service will not start now carries account mail. It used to drop it after logging that it was configured. AppState's three constructors built the same state three times, so they now share one assembly. The display name is sanitised before it reaches a mail client, since it is whatever the person typed. The link is left alone, because redaction would eat its token. The notification workers swap imports. Slack and Discord now get ZONE_NOTIFY_TIMEOUT_SECONDS for their own requests, as documented, and Discord keeps its Zone footer, which the crate leaves opt-in. The email channel no longer needs a Tokio runtime to be built.
