ipxe config file from sd card

how do I use a iPXE config file to enable AoE boot? currently it doesn't load from the root of the SD card or in the /efi/boot directory. what am I missing? is it's a config.txt option?

iPXE will perform an AoE boot if directed to do so by the DHCP server (i.e. if the DHCP server provides no boot filename and instead provides a root-path option such as aoe:e0.0).
