Attachments are not visible on the front end

Joomla 6.1.2 php 8.3 Attachements 4.4.2

After migrating the site to a different server and performing an update Joomla 3 to 4 to 5 to 6.1.2, attachments are not visible on the front end. They are visible and downloadable from the back end. I recall there was a setting to enable this in the component options, but I can't seem to locate that function. It seems I followed the instructions correctly because everything works, except that attachments aren't downloading on the front end.

I’ve figured out the cause. It worked fine on the other server with those diacritics in the filenames, but it’s not working on this server after the migration. I assume the best approach is to fix all the filenames on the server. The data in the database itself looks correct—the names contain the right characters. Is there a way to fix this automatically on the FTP server? The database is fine; the issue only affects the attachments.

I get this error after visiting this page. Could it be that a title or name exceeds the character limit? Maybe I should increase the limit in phpMyAdmin?

If you have the hand on the database you can increase the size for instance to 255

@bsylwek a couple of things you should check if they are configured correctly:

• Does the server have correct locale? It should have a utf8 locale so that the filenames are treated correctly.
• Check the collation of the joomla attachments table. It should be utf8mb3_general_ci or something similar

My feeling was that the new server does have long path so that the limit for attachment display_name is too short

The filenames in the attachments are showing up as garbled text, which is likely the cause of the numerous errors. The names are encoded correctly in the database, but on the FTP server, they appear as garbled characters instead of the proper diacritics.

@bsylwek if both ftp and php show garbled filenames I think the issue is with the character set in the server. Is default_charset set to a specific character set instead of UTF-8? You can check with phpinfo()

Also you can get the default locale with echo locale_get_default(); in a php file.

I resolved the issue by fixing the specific attachments that were affected. The hosting provider could not explain why the encoding problem occurred and had no solution for it, so I had to manually correct every attachment that had the error. The issue affected files on the FTP server, while the database encoding was correct.
