Spotted this on vmware/open-vm-tools#586 :

Issue is because of libdumbnet being used in FreeBSD.

And I was wondering whether that remark applies to libdnet, and whether the problem still persists?

Yes, this is libdnet, but a very old version of it. I'd suggest FreeBSD updates the ports to the latest version and this repo here and see if there are any regressions + if the problem is fixed or not. If not, I can of course look into it, although I always have a hard time with *BSD, because I have no BSD boxes around. However, the build/CI system here at least tests compilation against it these days.
