Speechmatics TTS currently ships English voices only. Our production language is
German (de-DE), so the current TTS offering isn't usable for us — the 55-language
recognition on the STT side doesn't carry through to synthesis. The docs note that
additional languages are in active development, but there's no published list or
timeline, which makes it impossible to plan around.
Describe the solution you'd like
German (de-DE) voice support in Speechmatics TTS, ideally matching the English
voices on real-time streaming (~150ms first audio) and using the same API surface.
Even a published roadmap with an approximate quarter for German would let us plan.
Describe alternatives you've considered
- Continuing with our current third-party TTS engine (works, but means running a
second vendor alongside Speechmatics STT, which we'd rather consolidate).
- Self-hosting an open TTS model with a German fine-tune (quality on German proper
nouns and compound words has been unreliable in our testing).
- A large-vendor TTS API with German support (rejected — it reintroduces a
non-EU data processor, which conflicts with our GDPR/EU-only commitment to clients).
Use case
- What are you trying to accomplish? We run a production German-language voice phone
agent and already use Speechmatics STT (Enhanced) for transcription. We want to
move the TTS side onto Speechmatics too, so the full pipeline runs through one
EU/GDPR-aligned vendor.
- How would this feature improve your workflow? One vendor for STT + TTS, one
integration and contract, and Speechmatics' streaming latency (~150ms first audio)
would directly fix the response-latency problem we have with our current TTS.
- Who would benefit from this feature? Any Speechmatics customer building
German-language voice agents — a large market — plus anyone in the DACH region who
needs an EU-based end-to-end speech stack.
