From 70c68438f2be21ef9ccce86eaf0bad37796b07b4 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Vynull App Date: Sat, 3 Oct 2026 21:41:38 +0000 Subject: [PATCH] pdb: read the artist/album name offset from the row, not a hardcode MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Serving a rekordbox USB mis-displayed some artists as hundreds of bytes of concatenated names (also the root cause the export sanitize fix masked). The reader assumed each artist/album name sat at a fixed row offset (10/12 for artists, 22/24 for albums), but the real format stores the name OFFSET in the row — a u8 for the near variant, a u16 for the far — and the string at that offset. A short ASCII name happens to sit at 10, so the hardcode worked for most rows; a longer or UTF-16 name sits further along, so the hardcode landed on padding, read a length-kind byte of 0x00 (neither ASCII nor UTF-16 flag set), and the decoder's fallback returned the entire rest of the string heap. Read row[9] (near) / row[10:12] (far) for artists and row[21] / row[22:24] for albums, matching the documented DeviceSQL layout. Also widen the artist/album id reads from u16 to the real u32. Safe for working libraries: where the old hardcode was right the name already sat at that offset, so the read-back offset equals the hardcode and the result is identical — validated across five real pdbs (a problem stick + four exports): every previously-correct artist unchanged, only the over-read rows fixed, zero regressions. TestParseArtistRowReadsNameOffset pins it with a short-ASCII and a UTF-16 row built to the real format. --- pdb/artistrow_test.go | 89 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ pdb/pdb.go | 33 ++++++++++++---- 2 files changed, 114 insertions(+), 8 deletions(-) create mode 100644 pdb/artistrow_test.go diff --git a/pdb/artistrow_test.go b/pdb/artistrow_test.go new file mode 100644 index 0000000..f034f27 --- /dev/null +++ b/pdb/artistrow_test.go @@ -0,0 +1,89 @@ +// SPDX-License-Identifier: GPL-3.0-or-later + +package pdb + +import "testing" + +// buildArtistRow lays out a minimal rekordbox artist row (subtype 0x0060): +// subtype(2) index_shift(2) id(4) unknown(1=0x03) ofs_name(1) ... string. +// The DeviceSQL string is placed at nameOff, so the row models the real +// format where the name offset is READ from byte 9, not assumed to be 10. +func buildArtistRow(id uint32, nameOff int, sqlString []byte) []byte { + row := make([]byte, nameOff+len(sqlString)) + le16put(row, 0, 0x0060) + le32put(row, 4, id) + row[8] = 0x03 + row[9] = byte(nameOff) + copy(row[nameOff:], sqlString) + return row +} + +// shortASCII builds a DeviceSQL short-ASCII string ("len-kind" byte then the +// bytes). strLen in the header counts the header byte itself + the chars + 1. +func shortASCII(s string) []byte { + out := []byte{byte(((len(s) + 1) << 1) | 1)} + return append(out, s...) +} + +// utf16Long builds a DeviceSQL long UTF-16LE string: 0x90 marker, u16 total +// length, a pad byte, then UTF-16LE data — the form a name with non-ASCII +// characters takes, and the form the hardcoded-offset reader over-read. +func utf16Long(s string) []byte { + var body []byte + for _, r := range s { + body = append(body, byte(r), byte(r>>8)) + } + total := 4 + len(body) + out := []byte{0x90, byte(total), byte(total >> 8), 0x00} + return append(out, body...) +} + +// TestParseArtistRowReadsNameOffset pins the fix for the string-heap +// over-read: the reader must follow the row's own name-offset byte.
