pair-mailbox operates within multi-process environments driving local CLI shells. Security is built into the protocol through the following mechanisms:
-
Strict Single Writer Invariant: Only the verified writer agent may modify repository files or execute mutating commands. The read-only peer proposes changes exclusively through sealed patches.
-
SHA-256-Sealed Patches (hash seal, not a signature): Proposed patches are stored with restrictive permissions (
0600) and sealed with SHA-256 checksums (integrity seal against accidental or third-party modification between proposal and application — not a cryptographic signature of authorship). The writer recomputes and verifies the checksum immediately before application. Any mismatch halts execution immediately. -
Multi-Project tmux Isolation: Tmux target panes are validated by
pane_current_pathandpane_pid. Commands and signals cannot cross workspace boundaries into unrelated sessions or projects. -
Guarded Permission Unblocking (
pair_unblock): Autonomous confirmation of interactive prompts is strictly confined to an immutable allowlist (e.g. read-only inspections). Destructive commands, migrations, and secrets access are never automatically confirmed. -
Zero Pip Runtime Dependencies: The engine relies solely on the Python 3 standard library (zero pip packages), eliminating PyPI supply chain attack vectors.
tmuxandgitare required system tools outside that seal.
If you discover a security vulnerability within pair-mailbox, please do not open a public issue.
Instead, report it via GitHub Private Vulnerability Reporting:
- Navigate to the repository's Security tab.
- Click Report a vulnerability.
- Include:
- Description of the issue and attack vector.
- Proof of concept or reproduction steps.
- Affected CLI profiles or environments.
