robust async state machine for the services dashboard (loading/empty/error/success) #626

Closed as not planned

Description

@mikewheeleer

Summary

The services dashboard conflates loading, empty, error, and success, so users sometimes see a blank screen or an error behind data. Model the fetch as an explicit state machine with mutually-exclusive states and a retry.

Why this matters

Ambiguous async states are a top source of confusing UIs and bugs. An explicit machine makes every state intentional and testable.

Requirements

  • Model the services dashboard fetch as loading | empty | error | success, mutually exclusive by construction.
  • Render the correct UI for each, with a retry affordance on error.
  • Transitions are deterministic; no state can render behind another.
  • Announce state changes to assistive tech.

Technical guidance

  • Represent state as one discriminated union, not separate booleans.
  • Reset to loading on an explicit refetch.

Edge cases — each must have a test

  • loading -> shows loader only
  • empty result -> empty state only
  • error -> error + retry only
  • success -> content only
  • retry -> returns to loading then resolves

Acceptance criteria

  • All requirements and every edge case above implemented and covered by tests
  • New unit and integration tests; existing tests still pass and no regressions
  • Structured, typed errors (no leaked internals; stable codes)
  • npm run lint, npm test, and npm run build all pass locally
  • Code follows the repo's existing conventions; no duplication or dead code
  • Short docs/comments explaining the design and any non-obvious decisions
  • PR description explains the approach and includes Closes #<issue>

Out of scope

  • Global fetch cache
  • Suspense migration

Rewards

Part of the GrantFox OSS / Official Campaign (FWC26) — this task may be rewarded. PR quality is assessed by AI: depth, correctness under edge cases, meaningful tests, and clean design are what earn the reward. Shallow changes (typos, formatting, trivial docs) do not qualify.

    Hey team,

I would like to resolve this issue. Here is my proposed execution plan:

    • Implementation: Build robust async state machine for the services dashboard (loading/empty/error/success) with clean React/Next.js components, responsive styling, and proper loading/error boundaries.
    • Testing & Verification: Add component unit tests and ensure zero TypeScript/ESLint warnings.
    • Delivery: Ready to ship a thoroughly tested PR within 12–24 hours with passing CI.

I am ready to start immediately—please assign this to me!

Technical Implementation Proposal: Deterministic Async State Machine for Services Dashboard

Hi @maintainers, I would like to resolve this issue under the GrantFox campaign.

    1. Architecture & Component Scope

    • src/hooks/useServicesStateMachine.ts: Type-safe finite state machine hook for async query lifecycle.
    • src/pages/ServicesDashboard.tsx / src/components/services/ServicesList.tsx: Integration with UI states.
    • src/hooks/__tests__/useServicesStateMachine.test.ts: State transition test suite.

    2. Proposed Implementation

    • FSM Transitions: Model explicit states (IDLE | LOADING | SUCCESS | EMPTY | ERROR) with strict transition guards preventing race conditions or stale async responses.
    • Resilient Error Recovery: Provide a clean retry action that resets transient errors without triggering full UI unmounts or layout shift.
    • Zero UI Flicker: Support optimistic transitions and debounced loading skeletons.

    3. Testing Strategy

    • Unit tests asserting:
      1. Successful data fetch transitions through LOADING -> SUCCESS.
      2. Empty data payloads transition cleanly to EMPTY.
      3. API rejections trigger ERROR state with actionable retry trigger.
      4. Concurrent out-of-order responses do not overwrite latest query state.

    4. Estimate

    • 3 hours upon assignment.

    Looking forward to your assignment!

    /claim #626

I have submitted the original implementation in #650 under @woahwhattheheck, including the dashboard state-machine, retry and accessible state announcements, and the issue-specific unit/integration tests. I affirmatively request consideration and applicable reward/payment credit through the GrantFox OSS / FWC26 campaign if accepted. I understand the issue's reward is conditional and not a confirmed award.
