Summary

  • keep ordinary PR/push builds at contents: read
  • isolate dependency submission in a trusted push-only job with the required contents: write
  • split Javadoc build and GitHub Pages deployment so only the deploy job receives pages: write and id-token: write
  • pin every active workflow action to an immutable commit SHA with version comments
  • gate Pages publication to non-prerelease releases targeting master
  • update the workflow invariant test to enforce split least-privilege permissions

Validation

  • focused workflow invariant test: 1 passed
  • all active workflow YAML parsed and every uses: reference is SHA-pinned
  • clean Maven package: 982 tests passed, including packaged-artifact validation
  • Javadoc generation passed and produced the expected Pages artifact directory
  • git diff --check: passed
  • fresh independent read-only security review: no findings

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Build and documentation workflows now use more restricted, job-specific permissions.
    • Dependency submission runs separately on pushes, and build checkouts no longer persist credentials.
    • Javadoc publishing is limited to eligible published releases and deploys through a dedicated Pages job.
    • Workflow actions are pinned to specific revisions, and pull requests to the shared SQL backend initialization branch are no longer included in the build workflow.
  • Tests
    • Updated workflow checks to verify permission settings, credential handling, and release publishing conditions.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The pull request updates three GitHub Actions workflows. It changes Maven build and dependency submission jobs, adds release eligibility checks and separates Javadoc build and deployment, and pins the stale action to a commit SHA.

Changes

Maven build and dependency submission

Layer / File(s) Summary
Maven build triggers and permissions
.github/workflows/maven.yml
The workflow removes one pull request target, changes global contents permission to read, and pins checkout and Java setup actions to commit SHAs. Build checkout disables persisted credentials.
Push-only dependency submission
.github/workflows/maven.yml, AdvancedCore/src/test/java/com/bencodez/advancedcore/build/BuildInputPinningTest.java
Dependency submission moves to a push-only job with contents: write and persist-credentials: false. A test checks these settings.

Release-based Javadoc publishing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Release eligibility and documentation artifact
.github/workflows/publish-javadoc.yml, AdvancedCore/src/test/java/com/bencodez/advancedcore/build/BuildInputPinningTest.java
The workflow rejects prereleases and checks that the release tag commit is an ancestor of origin/master. The build checks out the validated commit, generates Javadoc, and uploads the artifact. Tests check job conditions, outputs, permissions, and dependencies.
GitHub Pages deployment
.github/workflows/publish-javadoc.yml
A separate job requires release eligibility and a successful build, then deploys through the GitHub Pages environment with job-level permissions.

Stale action revision

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pin stale action revision
.github/workflows/stale.yml
The workflow replaces the actions/stale@v5 reference with the v10.1.1 commit SHA.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to a505d

Release documentation is limited to commits already on master, and elevated Pages permissions are isolated to deployment. The remaining checkout assertion concerns future regression detection, not the current workflow, so no merge-blocking risk is established.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in AdvancedCore/src/test/java/com/bencodez/advancedcore/build/BuildInputPinningTest.java: Added Matcher and Pattern imports for extracting named workflow jobs.
  • observed — Modified behavior in AdvancedCore/src/test/java/com/bencodez/advancedcore/build/BuildInputPinningTest.java: The Javadoc workflow test now extracts three jobs and checks build/deploy permission separation, release eligibility and commit-output declarations, build and deploy conditions and dependencies, and the absence of target_commitish. It replaces the prior assertion that all three permissions appeared in one combined block.
  • observed — Modified behavior in AdvancedCore/src/test/java/com/bencodez/advancedcore/build/BuildInputPinningTest.java: Added a dependency-submission test that checks persist-credentials: false on the build and dependency-submission jobs, and contents: write on the dependency-submission job.
  • observed — Modified behavior in AdvancedCore/src/test/java/com/bencodez/advancedcore/build/BuildInputPinningTest.java: Added a private helper that matches a named top-level workflow job, fails the test with a “Missing [name] job” message when no match is found, and returns the matched job text.

24-25: 🔒 Security & Privacy | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Assert permissions for each job.

The current substring checks can still pass if build gains pages: write or id-token: write, because the existing deploy block satisfies the positive check. Parse the YAML and assert that build contains only contents: read, while deploy contains pages: write and id-token: write.

51-51: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Bind the assertion to the checkout step.

job(...) returns the complete job, so buildJob.contains("persist-credentials: false") can pass when unrelated step text contains the same setting. Extract the actions/checkout step and assert the setting within that step. The current workflow is correct, but this test does not detect a future checkout configuration regression.
