Render vote-site names safely without invisible formatting guards - #1706
Conversation
📝 Walkthrough
Pre-merge checks |
|
Revert the player-facing WORD JOINER formatting guard introduced by VotingPlugin #1643 and its display-only reward placeholder changes. Preserve unrelated asynchronous reward work. Keep NeoForge's later-added player-message isolation private to its own adapter, without relying on the reverted common formatting utility or altering its reward behavior. As requested, this restores the prior Bukkit external identifier rendering/parsing, removing #1643's hardening on those paths.

Keep external service identifiers inert during rendering
When automatic site creation receives a lower-trust Votifier service such as &kSpoofed, that value passes the relaxed validator, becomes the fallback display name, is inserted here, and is then interpreted by message.colorize() rather than remaining data; it can reset or obfuscate trusted menu text. The same change routes raw %...% identifiers through reward and reminder formatting passes, allowing installed placeholder expansions to reinterpret them. Preserve the exact identifier for matching/action values, but retain a separate escaped display value or reject interpreter delimiters at ingress.

Remove trailing CR characters from the changed lines
Running git diff --check 0e8799d^ 0e8799d reports trailing whitespace on 16 added lines in ConfigVoteSites.java, VotingPluginUser.java, and VoteSite.java, including this line. These mixed line endings leave the commit unable to satisfy the repository's mandatory pre-commit diff checks, so normalize the affected lines before merging.

Keep legacy service identifiers replayable after upgrade
When upgrading with an emergency pending-vote journal written by the previous release, a formerly valid service such as R&D or a URL containing %20 now fails PendingIncomingVoteJournal.load() because it uses this shared validator; both Bungee and Velocity then report that emergency votes could not be adopted and abort runtime initialization. Because one invalidated record aborts the entire journal, a single accepted durable vote can strand every queued vote, so existing records need backward-compatible validation or an automatic migration rather than a globally narrowed validator.

Keep persisted auto-created names inert during rendering
Although the new ingress validation addresses the earlier review comment for future votes, the current head still loads delimiter-bearing site keys already persisted by prior automatic creation: VoteSite.init() uses the key as the fallback display name without migration, and this changed call sends it through message.colorize(). An installation upgrading with an existing %player_name% or &k... site therefore still reinterprets attacker-derived text whenever /vote is rendered; preserve an escaped display representation or safely migrate these legacy entries.

Preserve guards at substitution boundaries
When a server uses a bracket-decorated layout such as [%SiteName%], an auto-created service named Javascript=... passes validation and is unchanged here, so substitution reconstructs the same [Javascript=...] rich-format token that the validator rejects when supplied directly; sinks such as VoteURL.java:72-80 parse formatting after replacement. Fresh evidence in this head is that the printable replacement removes the leading/trailing boundary markers and deletes formattingGuardPreventsTokensAcrossTemplateBoundaries, so replacing only delimiters inside the value does not keep attacker-derived text inert across template boundaries.

Accept legacy names in delay-rejection messages
In a mixed-version deployment, an older proxy can send VoteDelayRejected for an existing service identifier containing a quote, bracket, backtick, or backslash, all of which were previously accepted but now fail this validator. This branch returns effectsComplete=true, so handleOrderedVote records the vote as completed and acknowledges it without resolving the site or granting its configured WaitUntilVoteDelayRewards, permanently losing that reward. Use backward-compatible validation for this protocol path rather than treating these legacy identifiers as successfully processed.

Keep section-sign formatting codes rejected at ingress
When AutoCreateVoteSites is enabled, a Votifier service such as §kSpoofed now passes isValid() and is persisted as the site's key and fallback display name. The new escaping only protects callers of getDisplayNameForFormatting(), while AdminGUI.java:280-286 and :308 still render getDisplayName()/the raw key, so the lower-trust identifier is interpreted as a Minecraft formatting code and can obfuscate the administration UI. Fresh evidence versus the earlier rendering finding is that this change explicitly removes § from isDisallowed; retain that rejection unless every raw rendering sink is converted.

Problem and resulting behavior
Replace #1643's U+2060 WORD JOINER display guards, reported as missing glyphs around voting-site names, with printable ASCII substitutions and ordinary space boundaries. Ordinary names retain their characters with ASCII space boundaries; delimiters in lower-trust service identifiers or fallback site keys display as
(ampersand),(percent),(section),(open brace)or(close brace). No hidden Unicode markers or client resource pack are required.Restore the existing separation between display-only placeholders and raw action identifiers throughout inventories, dialogs, broadcasts, reminders and rewards. Explicit administrator-authored display names retain supported colors/placeholders. Later asynchronous reward scheduling remains intact; no second reward path is introduced.
Upgrade compatibility
Service-name acceptance and durable journal loading retain their prior behavior. Legacy
R&D,%...%and URL-shaped service identifiers remain exact for site matching and replay. Already-persisted auto-created fallback labels are rendered safely without renaming sites or modifying player data. No manual migration is required. This replaces the earlier follow-up's narrowed ingress policy, which could strand legacy journal records.Retain the existing section-sign (
§) rejection for incoming service names, preventing automatic creation of names that can format raw administrative labels. Configured legacy delay-rejection recovery remains available. The delayed
VoteDelayRejectedpath preserves older proxies' reward decisions for already-configured names containing legacy punctuation. Such names must remain bounded and control-free and match an enabled loaded site’s configuredServiceSite(case-insensitively), without auto-creation. Display-name/key aliases alone cannot authorize these legacy rejection rewards, and a colliding alias cannot shadow the real service; unknown malformed names remain rejected before user lookup. Display-only brackets, quotes, backticks and backslashes also use printable labels. Both legacy and reliable messages are covered. Voting URLs and raw action values remain unchanged. See rendering documentation for printable labels and trusted-label behavior.Actual verification —
