Findings

  1. Root cause identified

    • extractRouting validated or inspected a trimmed destination but passed the original unsanitized destination to the address parser.
    • Hidden characters therefore reached checksum and StrKey validation, producing false “invalid address” errors.
  2. Affected implementations

    • TypeScript
    • Go
    • Dart
  3. Problematic input identified

    • Carriage returns and line feeds
    • Tabs and NUL bytes
    • Zero-width spaces and joiners
    • Byte-order marks
    • Bidirectional override/isolate controls
    • Variation selectors
    • Unicode control and default-ignorable characters
    • Surrounding Unicode whitespace
  4. Missing diagnostics

    • There was no warning informing developers when an address was automatically modified.
  5. Testing gap

    • Shared test vectors did not cover copied addresses containing malicious or invisible Unicode.
    • The Go specification runner also skipped extract_routing vectors.

Fix Features

  • Added destination preprocessing before prefix validation and address parsing.
  • Removes hidden, non-printable, and default-ignorable Unicode characters.
  • Trims surrounding whitespace.
  • Uses the sanitized destination for G-address parsing and M-address decoding.
  • Keeps visible internal invalid characters, ensuring genuinely malformed addresses remain rejected.
  • Emits this structured warning whenever sanitization changes the destination:
{
  "code": "SANITIZED_HIDDEN_CHARS",
  "severity": "info",
"message": "Destination was sanitized by removing hidden characters and surrounding whitespace."
}
  • Places the sanitization warning before subsequent routing warnings.
  • Preserves the warning in structured address-error results.
  • Supports TypeScript’s minSeverityLevel filtering.
  • Added warning types/constants for TypeScript, Go, and Dart.
  • Added strict JSON Schema validation requiring info severity.
  • Added three shared regression vectors covering:
    • Carriage returns and surrounding whitespace
    • Zero-width, bidi, BOM, and variation-selector characters
    • M-addresses containing isolate, NUL, and zero-width characters
  • Added direct unit tests in all three implementations.
  • Updated the Go specification runner to execute routing vectors.

Outcome

Messy addresses copied from PDFs, block explorers, operating systems, and other platforms are now sanitized and routed successfully instead of producing false invalid-address errors. Existing memo handling, checksum validation, routing-ID precision, and routing precedence remain intact.

CLOSE #318

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Routing now removes hidden or non-printable characters and surrounding whitespace from destination addresses before validation and parsing.
    • When a destination is changed, routing results include an informational warning. Unchanged destinations do not receive this warning.
    • The behavior is available across the Dart, Go, and TypeScript libraries.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the routing specification to describe destination sanitization and its warning.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Dart, Go, and TypeScript routing now remove specified hidden or non-printable destination characters and surrounding whitespace before validation and parsing. When sanitization changes the input, results include an informational SANITIZED_HIDDEN_CHARS warning. Specification schemas, tests, and routing vectors cover the behavior.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 9d8ec

Some pasted destinations produce inconsistent results across SDKs: Go may accept a visibly invalid address, Dart may reject an address containing a hidden character, and URI routing may omit the sanitization warning. Resolve these differences before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 9d8ec

Go can now route an address containing an internal Unicode space that TypeScript and Dart leave for address validation to reject. A warning reports the change, but it does not prevent routing. The impact on applications depends on how they obtain destinations and use routing results.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Go removes internal Unicode space separators before StrKey validation, so a destination that the other SDKs reject can become a valid routed account. The informational warning does not enforce rejection.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified Go acceptance difference affects destinations passed to the public routing function, at most one routed destination per invocation. The inspected paths do not establish a tenant boundary, elevated privilege, or a payment-submission sink.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — If an application supplies an internally spaced, otherwise valid address to Go routing, sanitization can turn it into a routable account before StrKey validation. Whether an attacker can supply that input to a consequential caller is unresolved.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Go still parses the resulting destination and reports modification with an informational warning; C-address destinations remain invalid routing destinations. These controls limit the path but do not require a caller to acknowledge the changed input.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Different Unicode classification rules across SDKs can produce different acceptance decisions for the same supplied destination, weakening the shared validation contract.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Specify whether internal Unicode space separators must remain invalid, then add shared vectors for internal spacing and unassigned code points so all SDKs make the same routing decision.

Review comments at @packages/core-dart/lib/src/routing/extract.dart:
- Line 75: Update `_isHiddenOrNonPrintable` to also exclude Unicode unassigned
code points, including U+0378, so `extractRoutingSync` removes them before
parsing. Add U+0378 to the shared sanitization vector and leave other
destination handling unchanged.

Review comments at @packages/core-go/routing/extract.go:
- Line 20: Update the filtering condition in the routing extraction flow so
Unicode spacing characters are preserved instead of deleted, allowing internal
spaces such as U+2003 to remain invalid during validation. Keep
strings.TrimSpace responsible for removing only surrounding whitespace.

Review comments at @packages/core-ts/src/routing/extractFromURI.ts:
- Line 135: In the destination construction within extractFromURI, keep the
existing empty-destination guard but pass the original, untrimmed destination to
safelyDecode so extractRouting can detect and report leading or trailing
whitespace.
