The focus of the GlyGen Sandbox is to explore new ways to infer biologically relevant assertions based on abstractions specified in 'GlycoTree'. Specifically, 'canonical residues' in GlycoTree are generalized abstractions of glycosyl residues in glycans, each defined according to its internal structure (e.g., 'beta-D-GlcpNAc' or 'L-Fucp') and chemical context within the tree (e.g., glycosidically linked to position 4 of the canonical residue with residue_id="NA"). This allows glycan structures to be fully specified as a simple list of canonical residues and provides a means by which common components (residues) of supported glycans (e.g., N-glycans) can be readily mapped to their biological properties, such as the enzymes that transfer each residue to the nascent glycan in vivo.
