Problem

The Redis Queue dashboard showed 3,651 jobs stuck as "queued" (2026-04-29 → 2026-08-21) while Redis itself held nothing. They came from 25 translations, each retried over and over:

  • Infinite retries. redis-queue retries a failed job by enqueueing it as a new job whose attempt count starts again at 0, so attempts < max_attempts is always true. A translation that kept failing retried every 30 s for hours (post 757 → it was retried 1,117 times on 2026-08-21). This started once CDCF_Translation_Job began throwing to trigger retries (d9906df, 2026-04-29).
  • Dead records. Each retry also set the old record back to queued, but that job is no longer in Redis, so nothing ever processes it.

All 25 translations did complete eventually. The dead records have been removed from production (a backup was kept).

Changes

  • CDCF_Translation_Job and CDCF_Review_Email_Job count attempts in their payload (_cdcf_attempt). The payload carries over into the retried job, so retry_attempts and the backoff schedule now apply as configured.
  • New includes/retry-cleanup.php: on redis_queue_job_retried, delete the record the retry replaced (only while it is still queued).
  • cdcf_enqueue_translation() now falls back to WP-Cron when enqueue() returns false (Redis unreachable or the record couldn't be stored). Before, it only fell back on an exception and reported redis for a job that was never queued.
  • docs/redis-queue-worker.md: troubleshooting entry on telling dead queued records from live ones, including why "Reset stuck jobs" doesn't requeue anything.

Testing

  • composer test (plugin): 35 tests OK. New tests cover the carried-over attempt count, backoff, record cleanup, and the enqueue() === false fallback. Each failed before its fix.
  • composer test (theme): 889 tests OK. A new test checks that the email job stops after 3 attempts.
  • I couldn't run this end to end locally: the local WordPress container has no phpredis extension, so redis-queue never connects there. Instead I read the upstream code and confirmed that a retry is rebuilt from serialize()['payload'], which is captured after should_retry() updates the counter.

Deploy

These are theme and plugin changes, so they need gh workflow run deploy.yml -f environment=production.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Translation and review email jobs now retain retry progress across retries, stop at the configured retry limit, and use the appropriate retry delays.
    • Translation jobs fall back to WordPress scheduling when Redis cannot enqueue them.
    • Superseded queued jobs are cleaned up after a replacement is successfully enqueued.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance for diagnosing queued records that will not run, checking Redis queues, and choosing cleanup or recovery steps, including how to rerun a translation.

redis-queue retries a failed job by enqueueing it as a new job whose
attempt count starts again at zero, so the count never reaches the
limit: a translation that kept failing retried every 30 seconds for
hours (one target post was retried 1,117 times on 2026-08-21). Each
retry also left the old record set to 'queued' with nothing left in
Redis to process it, which filled the dashboard with 3,651 dead rows.

The translation and review email jobs now count attempts in their
payload, which the retried job carries over, and the plugin deletes the
record a retry replaces. The worker doc explains how to tell dead
'queued' records from live ones.

redis-queue's enqueue() returns false, without throwing, when it cannot
reach Redis or store the job record. cdcf_enqueue_translation() only
fell back on an exception, so it reported 'redis' and the translation
was never queued.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes add WP Cron fallback when Redis enqueue returns false, preserve retry-attempt counts for translation and review email jobs, and remove matching queued job records after retries. The documentation adds guidance for investigating queued dashboard records and rerunning affected translations.

Changes: Redis queue and retry handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Redis enqueue fallback
wordpress/plugins/cdcf-redis-translations/includes/functions.php, wordpress/plugins/cdcf-redis-translations/tests/EnqueueTranslationFallbackTest.php
When Redis enqueue() returns false, translation scheduling logs the failure and falls back to WP Cron. A test covers the fallback result and scheduled event.
Retry attempt tracking
wordpress/plugins/cdcf-redis-translations/includes/class-translation-job.php, wordpress/plugins/cdcf-redis-translations/tests/TranslationJobTest.php, wordpress/plugins/cdcf-redis-translations/tests/stubs/AbstractBaseJobStub.php, wordpress/themes/cdcf-headless/includes/review/email-job.php, wordpress/themes/cdcf-headless/tests/ReviewMailerTest.php, wordpress/themes/cdcf-headless/tests/stubs/AbstractBaseJobStub.php
Translation and review email jobs store retry attempts in their payloads and use the stored count for retry decisions and delay calculations. Tests cover reconstructed jobs, retry limits, and delays.
Superseded queued-record cleanup
wordpress/plugins/cdcf-redis-translations/cdcf-redis-translations.php, wordpress/plugins/cdcf-redis-translations/includes/retry-cleanup.php, wordpress/plugins/cdcf-redis-translations/tests/RetryCleanupTest.php, docs/redis-queue-worker.md
The plugin registers enqueue and retry callbacks. The cleanup callback deletes a matching job row only when the replacement is the remembered enqueued job and the old row remains queued. The documentation explains how to investigate queued records and rerun affected translations.

redis-queue fires redis_queue_job_retried whether or not enqueueing the
retry succeeded, and does not pass the result. Delete the old record only
when redis_queue_job_enqueued fired for the same job object, which
enqueue() does only on success.
