SkillStreak

SkillStreak is a web app that helps people practice any skill consistently by tracking streaks and weekly progress, and making it easy to get back on track after a missed day.

Phase I Executive Summary

  • Who we're designing for: people who want to build a habit but fall off after a busy week, such as a college student juggling exams, a commuter who wants to surf before work, and a retiree doing therapy exercises.
  • What we studied: we ran a heuristic evaluation of Duolingo, the best-known streak-based app, scored against Nielsen's 10 usability heuristics (8/ 10 overall).
  • What we learned: always-visible progress keeps people coming back, but all-or-nothing streaks and guilt-driven prompts push them away once they slip. Upsells and buried account settings add friction.
  • What it means for SkillStreak: show progress right after sign-in, measure consistency against a weekly target instead of only an unbroken streak, keep screens free of pop-ups, and keep account controls one click away.
