Description

Follow-up to #5002 focused on startup responsiveness and diagnostics.

  • Marks locally compiled scripts at compile time and keeps UI/tab load-time diagnostics at DEBUG, so release scripts compiled by GitHub Actions do not emit the verbose startup timings.
  • Retains the main branch's WPF-native favicon path, which begins icon requests while application-entry batches are still rendering. A deferred downloader based on Load application favicons without blocking the UI #4889 was tested and removed after runtime observation showed that its letter-first/icon-second sequence doubled visible icon completion time.
  • Correctly recognizes the numeric Disabled value returned by NetSecurity for an existing OpenSSH firewall rule, addressing the dismissed review comment from Consolidate background work into one job layer #5002.

Validation

  • ./Compile.ps1
  • Pester 5.8.0: 832 passed, 0 failed, 1 expected UAC skip
  • PSScriptAnalyzer: 0 errors
  • Direct comparison confirms the favicon-related source and tests match main
  • Local Codex review of final head d7d02d12: 0 actionable findings
  • GitHub CodeRabbit review: passed with no remaining findings
  • All GitHub compile, generated-file, analyzer, and test checks pass
  • All review threads are resolved

The interactive ./Compile.ps1 -Run GUI check was not run because this session is non-elevated and it would require an interactive UAC prompt. The favicon correction restores the exact implementation whose faster behavior was observed on main.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements

    • Debug-level messages and interface timing details are now limited to local compilation, reducing unnecessary diagnostic output in other environments.
    • Local compilation status is reflected consistently in generated scripts and runtime diagnostics.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Windows Firewall rule checks now correctly distinguish enabled and disabled states, preserving existing enabled rules without unnecessary changes.

Walkthrough

The change adds local-compilation state to generated scripts, filters non-local debug diagnostics, updates UI timing tests, corrects SSH firewall-state handling, and updates project guidance and XAML synchronization validation.

Changes

Local compilation diagnostics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Local compilation state and diagnostic filtering
Compile.ps1, scripts/start.ps1, functions/private/Measure-WinUtilStep.ps1, functions/private/Write-WinUtilLog.ps1, functions/private/Start-WinUtilUserInterface.ps1, pester/logging.Tests.ps1, pester/sanity.Tests.ps1
The generated script records whether compilation is local. UI timing and DEBUG logging are suppressed outside local compilation. Tests cover both local and non-local behavior.

SSH firewall state handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Numeric firewall-state handling
functions/private/Invoke-WinUtilSSHServer.ps1, pester/ssh-server.Tests.ps1
SSH setup checks numeric firewall states and leaves an existing enabled rule unchanged. Tests cover disabled and enabled rules.

Project guidance and sync validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Guidance and synchronization allowlist
AGENTS.md, pester/xaml.Tests.ps1
Project guidance records review-upload and install-tab rendering rules. XAML synchronization tests remove obsolete favicon state names.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to d7d02

The startup and favicon-loading behavior may still allow stale icons or missed rendering/request regressions across loading sessions. The firewall and diagnostic changes have targeted coverage, but the remaining favicon concerns should be resolved before merge.

45-49: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Isolate results from each favicon-loading session.

If Start-WinUtilFaviconLoading starts while an older worker is active, it replaces $sync.FaviconResults and resets $sync.FaviconInFlight. The older worker then enqueues its result into the new queue. Receive-WinUtilFaviconResult can decrement the new counter and apply stale bytes to a reused AppKey.

Use a session-specific result sink or generation token. Do not replace shared result state until older workers settle.

56-56: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Broaden the remote-source assertion.

The regex rejects only a double-quoted literal URL. An assignment such as $logo.Source = $faviconUrl or $logo.Source = $app.link still passes while restoring the blocking WPF network load. Reject any $logo.Source assignment, or test the rendered control and assert that Source remains unset.

Proposed test adjustment
- $entrySource | Should -Not -Match '\$logo\.Source\s*=\s*"https?://'
+ $entrySource | Should -Not -Match '\$logo\.Source\s*='

Assert every submitted request and its identity mapping.

The test checks only the first request's property names. A regression can reuse the first AppKey and Url for all four submissions, or attach extra data to later requests, while the test still passes. Assert the shape and expected values of every submitted request.

Proposed test adjustment
- @($script:submittedRequests[0].PSObject.Properties.Name) | Should -Be @("AppKey", "Url")

Ran all pester tests locally (832 passed, 1 expected UAC skip), PSScriptAnalyzer 0 errors. I closed #4889 and will reopen a new PR that targets the specific loading of favicons, since App entries stop rendering while the Tweaks/Config/AppX tabs build in the background. This will be similar work from #4889 but adapted to the new structure from #5002.

per-package driver injection (ChrisTitusTech#5048, ChrisTitusTech#5016) and the OSCDIMG lookup (ChrisTitusTech#4983),
and the interface build moved out of scripts/main.ps1 into
Start-WinUtilUserInterface.ps1 (ChrisTitusTech#5056). Main's versions of those are kept
whole and the wizard is re-applied on top of them:

- Set-WinUtilISOStep now marshals through Invoke-WPFUIThread instead of
reaching for the dispatcher itself, and is no longer injected into the
runspace by hand - every WinUtil function is already in the session state.
- The step chevron handlers moved to Start-WinUtilUserInterface.ps1 with the
rest of the Win11 Creator wiring.
- A failed modification now returns to the ISO picker rather than the modify
step: main rolls the mount back with it, so there is nothing left to retry.
- The docs keep main's accurate driver-injection description.
