Inject extension-class drivers in Win11 Creator - #5058
Conversation
📝 SummarySummary by CodeRabbit
WalkthroughThe Win11 Creator driver injection flow now injects Extension-class packages, removes stale duplicate packages, processes retained staged folders, and retries failed additions. Tests cover case variations, nested duplicates, and recursive injection results. Documentation reflects the updated exclusion rule. ChangesWin11 driver injection

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to Extension drivers will now be included, but nested stale packages can abort ISO creation during cleanup. Multiple invalid packages can also substantially extend creation time; the cleanup failure should be fixed before merge. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 5✅ Passed checks (5 passed)

369-373: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 TrivialNote the mount cost of the retry loop.
Each failing package costs one additional
/Mount-Imageplus a re-add of every package that already succeeded. Forkfailing packages the run performsk + 1mounts. On a system that exports many packages, several bad packages can add a large amount of wall-clock time to a step the guide already describes as 10–30 minutes.Consider bounding the retry count, or reporting progress per retry so the live log shows why the step is slow.

Description
#5016 filtered
Class=Extensionpackages out of Win11 Creator driver injection on the premise that extension drivers cannot be serviced offline. That premise is wrong: extension INFs are serviceable, so the filter silently dropped real functionality (audio effect add-ons and similar) from the built media. That was a bad call to make, since the real fix was discarding the packages instead of trying to work around the single /Add-Driver call. Now that #5048 adds each driver package with its own
dism /Add-Drivercall, a bad package only fails itself: the partial mount is discarded and the remaining packages are retried against the original image. Pre-filtering is no longer needed, so this PR removes the extension-class filter and lets packages with invalid data fail individually with a warning in the live log.Stale duplicate exclusion (same INF name and architecture from the same provider, lower
DriverVerloses) is unchanged and stays. WinPE boot-storage staging is untouched. The zero-driver skip branch that only the extension filter could trigger is removed, and the two nested-package tests that depended on it were retargeted to trigger through stale duplicates instead. The Win11 Creator guide no longer claims extension packages are excluded.

.\Compile.ps1completes and the generated script contains no extension-class filtering.Excluding extension-class driver packageand never reachedinstall.wim. After: they are added like any other package, covered by the "injects Class=Extension driver packages like any other export" test, and a genuinely unserviceable package only costs one discard and retry cycle.
