Description

Since #4995, checkbox tweaks and AppX entries have the tooltip <description>\n\nPreset key: <key>. The Tweaks/AppX search matches against the whole tooltip, so the label text itself is searchable. Searching key, set, reset or preset shows every checkbox entry: all 38 checkbox tweaks and all 34 AppX entries.

This PR removes only the literal Preset key: label from the tooltip string before matching, in the StackPanel/CheckBox branch of Find-TweaksByNameOrDescription. Descriptions and the keys themselves stay searchable, as the automation guide describes. The tooltip format and the Toggle branch are unchanged.

Before and after, using entries built from config/tweaks.json and config/appx.json:

  • Checkbox tweaks, key: 38/38 → 0. The Sticky Keys and Num Lock toggles still match, as they should.
  • Checkbox tweaks, set: 38/38 → 5 (the real "Set ..." tweaks).
  • AppX, preset: 34/34 → 0.
  • WPFTweaksServices, WPFAppxClipchamp, telemetry: same results as before.

Added a Pester case in pester/search-filter.Tests.ps1. It builds the tooltips with Get-WinUtilEntryToolTip, so it breaks if the label format changes. It fails on main and passes with this change.

Verification:

  • The search-filter and tooltip-key Pester files pass, both with the test file's stub types and with the real WPF types loaded. The full suite (Pester 5.8.0, pwsh 7) gives 857 passed, 0 failed, 1 skipped (main: 856 / 0 / 1).
  • The before/after numbers come from a local script. It runs the real function over controls built from the config files, and gives the same results in pwsh 7 and Windows PowerShell 5.1.
  • .\Compile.ps1 succeeds.
  • Script Analyzer shows no new findings.
  • I did not run the GUI.

Heads-up: #4906 rewrites this function and still matches the full tooltip, so whichever PR lands second needs a small rebase.

Maintainer validation (2026-10-21)

Validated final head 3d032084b78dfd04278320accfcf10f847177df8, including main d32efeb.

  • Exact-head Windows CI: 963 Pester 5.8.0 tests passed, zero failures/skips; Script Analyzer passed. CI evidence.
  • Native WPF search validation: 23 tests passed under both Windows PowerShell 5.1 and PowerShell 7 in STA with PresentationFramework controls. Native WPF evidence. This run used ff5655e; the final commit changes only the user-guide paragraph, so runtime evidence remains applicable.
  • Local compile, generated-script parsing, focused 23-test suite and diff checks passed; lint warnings reviewed without actionable source findings.
  • Full Codex and independent skeptical source audits completed clean. Both reviewed the final documentation-only correction as well.
  • Addressed CodeRabbit's guide finding: preset-key search applies to checkbox/AppX entries; toggle search uses its displayed label and description. The review thread is resolved.
  • First native harness attempt found a Pester module-path issue between hosts; the corrected harness passed. No harness is included in this PR.
  • No interactive application or screen-reader session was run. Code-owner approval and any outstanding GitHub review status remain required; no merge performed.

Since ChrisTitusTech#4995, checkbox tweaks and AppX entries have the tooltip
"<description>`n`nPreset key: <key>", and Find-TweaksByNameOrDescription
matches against the whole tooltip. Short queries such as "key", "set",
"reset" or "preset" therefore matched every checkbox entry.

Remove the literal "Preset key: " label before matching, so the
description and the key itself stay searchable. Add a Pester case built
with Get-WinUtilEntryToolTip.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Checkbox tweak searches now ignore the “Preset key:” tooltip label while continuing to match descriptions and preset keys.
    • Search behavior is now consistent for checkbox and AppX entries, while toggle searches continue to match displayed labels and descriptions.
  • Documentation

    • Updated the tweak search guide to clarify matching behavior and tooltip label handling.

Tweak search removes the exact "Preset key: " text from checkbox tooltips before matching. Tests and documentation cover searches against checkbox content, preset keys, and descriptions.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in functions/private/Find-TweaksByNameOrDescription.ps1: Before literal matching, the checkbox tooltip string now has every exact occurrence of "Preset key: " removed; checkbox content matching is unchanged.
  • observed — Modified behavior in pester/search-filter.Tests.ps1: The test setup now dot-sources Get-WinUtilEntryToolTip.ps1.
  • observed — Modified behavior in pester/search-filter.Tests.ps1: Adds a tweak-search test asserting that searching "key" matches neither item, while searches for "set", the telemetry preset key, and "svchost" each show only the item with the matching checkbox content, preset key, or description.
  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/src/content/docs/guides/tweaks.mdx: Added documentation describing Tweak and AppX search matching behavior: entry descriptions and preset keys are searchable, while the “Preset key:” tooltip label is excluded.
