Add optional license and verified fields to applications.json, filled
for 247 of 249 apps from each package's WinGet manifest on 2026-10-30

New config tests check WinGet and Chocolatey ID formats, duplicate keys

a valid, non-future verified date.

Present the fork as WinUtil Pro with accurate run instructions: it has
no published release, so the quick start builds from source, and the
upstream one-liner is labelled as running the original WinUtil.
Document the real feature set with counts taken from config, the
changes this fork has made, the build model, development commands, and
a roadmap. Requirements follow the docs (Windows 11 only). Upstream

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 98638
Several documented workflows and safety claims still direct users to incomplete or inconsistent behavior, including an executable download without an explicit HTTPS scheme and release builds that can link to the wrong tag. These issues should be addressed before merge.
Security architecture risk: High · up to 98638
The recommended administrator launch and automation examples replace explicit HTTPS with scheme-less download addresses. On clients that default these addresses to HTTP, a network attacker could substitute code before it executes with administrator privileges. The new executable-signature and hosts-list checks improve separate paths but do not protect this initial download.
Retained concerns
High · security · inferred: The primary administrator launcher and automation examples now fetch executable PowerShell through scheme-less addresses instead of explicit HTTPS. Where PowerShell supplies HTTP, an attacker controlling the initial network response can replace the launcher before Invoke-Expression or ScriptBlock execution. A later HTTPS redirect cannot authenticate that first response. The documented HTTPS alternative and HTTPS-based generated export command limit exposure but do not secure the default examples.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The transport concern exposes each administrator session that follows the affected launcher examples. Successful response substitution would grant attacker-selected code that session’s authority over the Windows machine, without requiring compromise of the legitimate release publisher.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The introduced attack path is initial network-response substitution followed directly by Invoke-Expression or ScriptBlock execution. The README’s recommendation to use full HTTPS on untrusted networks acknowledges the first-request distinction but leaves the default command exposed where the missing scheme resolves to HTTP. External redirect behavior and exploitation were not independently tested.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The actual exported command and elevation fallback explicitly use HTTPS, unlike the affected documentation examples. The executable-signature helper protects two downloaded utilities, not arbitrary remote PowerShell. Independent integrity controls in the external launcher or release publication process were not available for assessment.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The hosts validator narrows the third-party list’s authority from arbitrary mappings to blocking entries, but does not bound which hostnames may be blocked. Repeated append, interrupted writes, and concurrent apply or undo remain outside a transactional lifecycle in the inspected block. These residual failure-containment limits predate the change.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Require explicit HTTPS in every documented launcher and automation command, and keep those examples aligned with the HTTPS command already generated by Export. A focused contract check could prevent future transport drift between user entrypoints.
proposed — As follow-up hardening for the pre-existing hosts-file lifecycle, use an owned, delimited block with serialized atomic updates and removal limited to that block, rather than relying on a third-party marker and truncating the remaining file.

Require the undo marker before every block entry
If the fetched list remains syntactically valid but places #New Ver after one or more 0.0.0.0 entries (for example after an upstream reorder or compromise), this condition passes, while the UndoScript at lines 1143-1145 removes only text from the marker onward; the earlier blocks therefore survive Undo Selected Tweaks. Require the marker to precede the first active entry, or append WinUtil-owned begin/end markers, so the newly written entries are actually reversible.

Require the undo marker before every blocking entry.
If the response is 0.0.0.0 activate.adobe.com followed by #New Ver, both checks pass. Undo removes text from the marker onward, so the blocking entry remains in the hosts file. Require the marker to precede the first accepted mapping, or make Undo remove the exact appended section. The current check does not ensure that Undo restores the user's hosts file. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
As per coding guidelines, “registry and service changes include original values or original states when applicable so undo workflows can restore user systems.”

All 13 failures are **Windows PowerShell 5.1 test-harness issues, not product bugs**. CI runs the suite under `pwsh`:
- 11 × `pester/winoneshot-compat.Tests.ps1`: uses `ConvertFrom-Json -NoEnumerate`, which exists only in PowerShell 7.
- `pester/onedrive-removal.Tests.ps1` "restores permissions…": the fixture adds a `ProcessName` note property to an unstarted `Process`. In 5.1, `Where-Object` reads the adapted .NET property, which throws, so the mocked `Stop-Process` is never reached. Real processes are unaffected.
- `pester/oosu.Tests.ps1` "falls back to the plain percentage…": fails the same way with and without this pass's changes. The root cause was not investigated.

Do not classify the uninvestigated test as a harness issue.
The audit says all 13 failures are test-harness issues, then states that the oosu.Tests.ps1 root cause was not investigated. Validate exact duplicate keys before ConvertFrom-Json.
Default ConvertFrom-Json retains only the last value for an exact duplicate key. The resulting property list cannot detect that duplicate. For case-differing keys, ConvertFrom-Json reports an error before Group-Object can compare both names, so the current grouping does not detect them.
Check the raw JSON with a parser that rejects duplicate property names before conversion.

Use HTTPS in every launcher command
Because this is the primary command and users are explicitly told to open an Administrator shell, omitting the scheme leaves the first request unencrypted (as line 52 acknowledges) and pipes its body directly to iex; any on-path responder can return arbitrary code instead of a redirect, even on a nominally trusted LAN. Make HTTPS the default here and in both automation examples rather than an opt-in.

After this changes web/elevation relaunches to the fork, the repository's user-facing launch paths remain upstream: docs/src/content/docs/guides/getting-started.mdx:59 and guides/automation.mdx:19,46 still invoke christitus.com, while docs/src/lib/winutil-release.js:2 and ConfigBuilder.jsx:190 build against ChrisTitusTech/winutil. A fork user following those guides or the Config Builder therefore launches upstream WinUtil and loses every fork-specific fix, so these paths need to use the same fork release.

This downloads the [latest release](https://github.com/6t9xstar/winutil-pro/releases/latest) through a small [launcher](https://github.com/6t9xstar/win) and starts it. On an untrusted network, type the full `https://6t9xstar.github.io/win` so the first request is encrypted too.
PowerShell 7.x converts the scheme-less URI to HTTP before downloading it. The commands then execute the response with iex or ScriptBlock::Create. Add https:// to the commands in lines 49, 110, and 111.

19 catalog entries for security, network and forensics work, each
package ID confirmed with winget show and choco search on 2026-10-30.
Burp Suite Community and ZAP move from Pro Tools into Red Team, so the
catalog is now 268 entries in 14 categories.
Entries that probe or attack systems say in their description that they
need authorisation, and agents that need a server to report to say so.
Only tools with a real WinGet package are listed: Get-WinUtilSelectedPackages
skips an ID of "na", so a Chocolatey-only entry would silently install
nothing under the default WinGet preference. Suricata and Winlogbeat
therefore carry choco "na", their Chocolatey packages being years stale.
The four filter chips are wired in the XAML and the chip list, and a new
test fails if a category has no chip or a chip has no category.

The startup banner read CTT / Chris Titus Tech / Windows Toolbox. It is
now 6T9 / WinUtil Pro, keeping a "fork of ChrisTitusTech/winutil" credit
line underneath.
Repo metadata pointed at upstream, so the fork's Sponsor button funded
upstream, code review was assigned to upstream maintainers, and bug
reports were routed to upstream's Discord and docs. FUNDING.yml and
CODEOWNERS now name the maintainer of this fork, and the issue and PR
templates, CONTRIBUTING, the code of conduct contact and SECURITY.md
point here, naming upstream where a problem belongs upstream.
Attribution that must not move stays put: the MIT copyright notice in
LICENSE, the About dialog's author credits, start.ps1's author header,
and the name of the CTT PowerShell Profile feature, which installs
Chris Titus's own profile script.

ripienaar/free-for-dev has no LICENSE file and the GitHub API reports no

says plainly that WinUtil Pro does not install them, and points at the

README gains the security tooling section with its authorisation note,
the updated catalog counts, and roadmap entries for the Chocolatey
fallback and deploying this fork's docs site. The audit notes record
what was verified, what was deliberately left out and why, including
the tools with no Windows package and the workflow guards left alone.

Remove backslashes from the quoted-CN fixture
In the Run Pester tests step (.github/workflows/unittests.yaml:43-49), PowerShell treats backslashes literally inside a single-quoted string, so this mock supplies CN=\"Microsoft Corporation\" rather than a quoted CN. The helper's regex does not match that subject and throws, making the following Should -Not -Throw assertion fail in every full CI run; write the double quotes directly inside the single-quoted value.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Detect duplicate app keys before deserialization
When a contributor repeats an application key in the raw JSON, ConvertFrom-Json retains only the last value before $entries is built, so Group-Object can never observe that duplicate and this new guard passes. Compile.ps1:20-25 deserializes the catalog the same way, meaning the earlier app definition is then silently omitted from the release; perform duplicate-aware validation on the raw JSON before converting it.

WinUtil runs with administrator rights, so security issues matter. To report a problem in code that is specific to this fork, contact the maintainer through [apexsofteck.com](https://apexsofteck.com) and don't post exploit details publicly. For issues in upstream WinUtil, follow the [upstream security policy](.github/SECURITY.md).

Point upstream reports at the upstream security policy
When a reporter follows this link for an upstream-specific vulnerability, the relative path resolves to this fork's .github/SECURITY.md, whose line 9 only links to the upstream repository root. This routes the reporter away from upstream's actual security-policy and private-reporting instructions, so the link should target the upstream policy directly.

The link was built as releases/tag/<version>, and the version is always
the build date. Two releases cut on one day therefore share a version,
so the second one's build linked to the first one's tag, and a locally
compiled build linked to a tag that does not exist at all.
Compile.ps1 takes -Version to stamp the tag a release is published
under, defaulting to the build date as before, validated as tag-shaped
since it lands in a URL. -Release marks the output as published outside
CI. A build that knows it is local now links the release list instead of
guessing a tag.

Pass the release version before compiling the artifact
When the pre-release workflow is dispatched a second time on one day (the scenario this option is intended to fix), its Compile project step still calls ./Compile.ps1 without -Version, and only afterward sets VERSION to yy.MM.dd and skips an existing tag (.github/workflows/pre-release.yaml:28-31,59-84). The generated script therefore retains the original date and the workflow reuses the first tag, so the new About link still cannot identify a distinct second release; compute or select the tag before compilation and pass it here with -Release.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Point the checkbox at the actual known-issues page
When someone opens the bug form, this is a required attestation, but the changed URL only opens the repository README, which has no Known Issues section; the actual page is still docs/src/content/docs/knownissues.mdx and the guides link to /knownissues/. Reporters therefore cannot review the list they are forced to confirm and are more likely to file duplicates; point this at the known-issues page or add a fork-specific equivalent.

Use the release tag for the CI build.
The pre-release workflow compiles first and calculates its tag later. If those steps cross midnight, the About link points to the previous date instead of the published release. Calculate the tag once before compilation and pass it as -Version. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Reject verified metadata without a license
When a catalog entry contains verified but license is missing or misspelled, this branch validates only the date and the test passes. That contradicts the paired metadata contract in SPEC.md:86 and lets the app tooltip silently omit the supposedly verified license, so this branch should also add an error when license is absent.

Rebrand the remaining contribution instructions
When a contributor follows this new fork-specific link, the same guide still says to wait for Chris as the maintainer and promises the change in the upstream /windev channel at lines 118-120, even though this change assigns the fork to @6t9xstar. Contributors are therefore sent to the wrong reviewer and release flow; update the remainder of the guide as part of the rebrand.

Reconcile the FOSS badge with the license tooltip
When Proton Mail is rendered, foss: true makes Initialize-InstallAppEntry.ps1:93 add a “Free and Open Source Software” badge, while the newly displayed license tells the same user License: Proprietary; Proton Drive has the same contradictory pair at lines 1689-1690. Keep third-party rebuilds out of the trusted catalog
When users select the new iPerf3 entry under the default WinGet manager, this ID installs binaries from the unrelated ar51an/iperf3-win-builds project; leeter.WinMTR at line 3598 has the same issue. The PR's own audit explicitly records these IDs as deliberately excluded because they are third-party builds (docs/engineering/2026-10-30-audit-and-roadmap.md:75-77,126-130), while the README promises official sources, so remove them or explicitly approve, disclose, and verify these publishers before putting them in an elevated package-manager path.

Also no major refactor, no major UI changes, no reasonable docs changes. PR is just a one big slop.
Well, some portion is reasonable as suggestion, but I would that 'fraction' because size of accepted things is minor
