Fixes #6526.

The problem

A2UI catalogs are built from schemas the application supplies, so the schema library version is outside these packages' control: @copilotkit/react-core accepts zod >= 3.0.0 as a peer, while a2ui-renderer pins zod ^3 for its own built-in catalog. The catalog code converted those schemas with zodToJsonSchema, which reads _def.typeName to recognise a schema. Zod v4 renamed that to _def.type, so a v4 schema converts to a bare { $schema } — no properties, no required, and no error:

properties sent to the model required
Zod v3 component, filingId, status, risk all four
Zod v4 component only ["component"]

So the model is told the component exists and takes no props at all. It cannot emit a component the renderer can paint, the surface never resolves past its "Building interface" skeleton, and the run completes clean with nothing to point at. The reporter is on zod@4.4.3.

Four call sites are affected on current main: two in react-renderer/catalog-utils.ts and two in the Vue package, which carries its own copy of the catalog-context logic to avoid pulling React in. (web-components/ had two more, but that directory was removed in v1.75.1.)

The fix

Route conversion through schemaToJsonSchema from @copilotkit/shared — the dispatcher that already backs BuiltInAgent's tool conversion. It prefers Standard JSON Schema V1 (Zod v4, Valibot, ArkType), then a native toJSONSchema(), then the injected Zod v3 converter, and throws rather than returning something empty when it recognises nothing.

Two deliberate details:

  • Zod v3 releases before 3.24 predate Standard Schema and carry no ~standard marker for the dispatcher to read, so those keep converting directly.
  • On the Zod v3 path the caller's options, target included, are merged over the $refStrategy: "none" that shared injects, so v3 output is unchanged from today. A Standard JSON Schema (Zod v4, Valibot, ArkType) is converted by schemaToJsonSchema itself, which always asks for draft-07, so extractCatalogComponentSchemas gets draft-07 for those instead of jsonSchema2019-09.

Vue gets a small local mirror rather than a dependency on a2ui-renderer, for the same reason the schema-context constant is already duplicated there — importing it would pull React into the Vue package. Happy to restructure if you'd rather share it another way.

New dependency

@copilotkit/a2ui-renderer now depends on @copilotkit/shared (workspace:*). It didn't before. Both are published from this monorepo, so nothing new comes from outside, but it'll show up in the release.

Tests

Both packages get a regression test. Reverting just the source and re-running fails exactly one case in each, with the reported symptom:

× keeps a Zod v4 component's props in the emitted catalog schema
  → expected [ 'component' ] to deeply equal [ 'component', 'filingId', …(2) ]

The tests use a schema shaped like Zod v4 rather than a second copy of Zod. I first tried an aliased zod@4 devDependency and backed it out: it re-resolved the zod peer of unrelated packages (openai, the @ag-ui/* family) from 3.25.76 to 4.4.3 across 51 lockfile entries. The fixture is faithful in the two respects the conversion depends on — _def.type instead of _def.typeName, and Standard JSON Schema V1 — and reproduces the identical silent { $schema } result. The only lockfile change is the new @copilotkit/shared workspace link for a2ui-renderer (3 lines).

Verification

Re-run after rebasing onto current main:

  • a2ui-renderer: 26/26 tests, check-types and build pass.
  • vue: 1182/1182 tests, check-types passes.
  • pnpm install --frozen-lockfile is clean.
  • oxlint reports 0 warnings and 0 errors on the changed files, and oxfmt --check is clean.
  • No .changeset/ file, per CONTRIBUTING.

One thing I could not explain

The reporter says requesting generic Card / Row / Text also failed. Those come from the built-in catalog, built with this package's own Zod 3, so they convert correctly either way — this fix does not account for that leg, and I'd rather flag it than overclaim. It may be that the agent instructions kept steering the model to FilingCard, or that one invalid component fails the whole surface paint, but I haven't verified either.

Related: I could not reproduce the end-to-end flow (it needs a live model), so the chain from "empty prop schema" to "skeleton never paints" is read from the code rather than observed. The schema corruption itself is directly demonstrated by the tests.

Worth noting for triage: the BuiltInAgent-specific theory in the issue thread looks like a dead end. AbstractAgent provides use(), the in-memory runner goes through agent.runAgent() where the middleware chain is folded in, and BuiltInAgent.run() reads both input.tools and input.context — so the A2UI middleware does attach and the injected render_a2ui tool does reach the model. Also, since the "Building interface" skeleton is only rendered from an a2ui-surface activity, at least one ACTIVITY_SNAPSHOT must have arrived, contrary to the report.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Catalogs in React and Vue now support a wider range of schema formats, including Standard Schema implementations and newer Zod schemas.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Component catalog schemas now preserve their properties and required fields across supported schema formats.

Sorry that this sat without a review for so long. The fix is still needed, and the approach is right.

I checked it against a real Zod v4 (4.6.5) instead of the test double. zodToJsonSchema returns only {"$schema": ...} for a v4 z.object, with no properties and no error, as the test double claims. The same schema carries ~standard.jsonSchema, and schemaToJsonSchema gets the full properties and required from it. So the new path fixes the real case, and the test double is accurate.

Required:

  1. Rebase. The branch conflicts with main because packages/a2ui-renderer/src/web-components/ was removed in v1.75.1. Drop the change to web-components/create-catalog.ts. Keep the rest.

Smaller items:

  1. The comment about target is only half true. In catalog-schema.ts, the comment says that "the caller's target still wins". That is true for the Zod v3 path only. For any Standard JSON Schema (Zod v4, Valibot, ArkType), schemaToJsonSchema in packages/shared/src/standard-schema.ts:62 always asks for draft-07, so extractCatalogComponentSchemas gets draft-07 instead of jsonSchema2019-09. I do not think that matters for the model. Please correct the comment so that it states which path honors target. The same applies to the Vue copy.
  2. New dependency. @copilotkit/a2ui-renderer did not depend on @copilotkit/shared before. That is fine, because both are published from this monorepo. Please mention it in the PR description so that it is visible at release time.

After you push, I will approve the fork CI runs.

@pranavsridhar6, a question for you as the reporter of #6526: on v1.75 or later, does the "Building interface" hang still happen? Does it happen with Zod v4 only, or with Zod v3 too?

…y emptying them

A2UI catalogs are built from schemas the application supplies, so the schema
library version is outside these packages' control: `@copilotkit/react-core`
accepts `zod >= 3.0.0` as a peer, while `a2ui-renderer` pins `zod ^3` for its own
built-in catalog. The catalog code converted those schemas with `zodToJsonSchema`,
which reads `_def.typeName` to recognise a schema. Zod v4 renamed that to
`_def.type`, so a v4 schema converts to a bare `{ $schema }` — no `properties`,
no `required`, and no error.

The result is that every prop is stripped from the catalog schema the model is
shown: it is told a component exists and takes nothing but `component`. It cannot
emit a component the renderer can paint, so the surface never resolves past its
"Building interface" skeleton and the run completes clean, with no error to point
at. Reported in CopilotKit#6526.

Route the conversion through `schemaToJsonSchema` from `@copilotkit/shared`, which
already backs `BuiltInAgent`'s tool conversion: it prefers Standard JSON Schema V1
(Zod v4, Valibot, ArkType), then a native `toJSONSchema()`, then the injected Zod
v3 converter, and throws rather than returning something empty when it recognises
nothing. Zod v3 releases before 3.24 predate Standard Schema and carry no
`~standard` marker for it to dispatch on, so those keep converting directly.

The Vue package carries its own copy of the catalog-context logic to avoid pulling
React in, and had the same defect; it gets the same treatment.

The tests use a schema shaped like Zod v4 rather than a second copy of Zod: an
aliased `zod@4` devDependency re-resolves the `zod` peer of unrelated packages
(openai, the @ag-ui/* family) across the whole monorepo.
…rget

The comment claimed the caller's `target` always wins. That holds only for
the Zod v3 path, where the caller's options are merged into the injected
zodToJsonSchema call. For a Standard JSON Schema (Zod v4, Valibot, ArkType),
schemaToJsonSchema converts the schema itself and always requests draft-07.
Correct the comment, and add the same note to the Vue copy.

Thanks for checking it against real Zod 4.6.5, that's reassuring. All three items are done, now at 2ba53b8 on top of current main.

  1. Rebase. I rebuilt the branch on main and dropped the web-components/create-catalog.ts change. Everything else is the same fix (8c3fca0).
  2. target comment. It now says only the Zod v3 path honors the caller's options. For a Standard JSON Schema, schemaToJsonSchema always asks for draft-07. I added the same note to the Vue copy, which didn't have one before (2ba53b8).
  3. New dependency. It's called out in the PR description now. While I was in there I also noticed the description said "touches no lockfile", which was wrong once @copilotkit/shared was added. The lockfile diff is just the 3-line workspace link, and I've corrected that line too.

Re-ran on the rebased tree: a2ui-renderer 26/26 and vue 1182/1182, check-types passes for both, and --frozen-lockfile is clean.

The change fixes Zod v4 catalog schemas for the tested cases, but two possible gaps are unconfirmed. Some schemas, such as early Zod 4 releases, could still silently produce empty component schemas. Schemas that rely on shared definitions could also lose those definitions in the emitted catalog. Confirm or address both before merging.

Reject schemas that the Zod v3 fallback cannot convert. Both converters dispatch unsupported inputs to zodToJsonSchema. Zod v4.0–4.1 lacks the Standard JSON Schema support added in v4.2.0, so its ~standard schema reaches that fallback and can again produce a bare schema without an error. An unrecognized schema without ~standard reaches the direct fallback. (github.com)

Keep referenced definitions in the inline catalog. Both extraction paths copy converted properties and required but discard $defs. A valid property reference to #/$defs/... then has no definition in the emitted catalog. Zod can generate references for cycles. (zod.dev)

I tested this end to end in an app on Zod 4.4.3: Ragoût's frontend, a LlamaIndex agent over AG-UI, on @copilotkit/react-core 1.78.0 and @a2ui/web_core 0.10.4. I installed this branch's a2ui-renderer (packed from 2ba53b8d) and compared it with the published 1.78.0, using zod/v3 as a control.

The schema half works. For a catalog written entirely in Zod 4 (the DynString union from the showcase llamaindex/a2ui-fixed-schema demo), the published renderer gives the agent only {"component": {"const": "Title"}}. This branch gives the full props, including text: anyOf [string, {path}], the same as the zod/v3 control. That matches Ben's check.

Three things I ran into that are outside this PR's diff, in case they're useful:

  1. Path bindings still don't render with Zod 4. With this branch, a prop bound as { "path": "/title" } renders as "[object Object]" with no error, both on the published version and on this branch. With zod/v3 it renders the value. The GenericBinder in @a2ui/web_core 0.10.4 doesn't recognise a Zod 4 z.union([z.string(), z.object({ path })]) as dynamic, which I think is what fix(web_core): make GenericBinder schema classification zod-version-agnostic and fail loudly on unknown internals a2ui-project/a2ui#2753 fixes. So once this lands, the agent will be told about {path} bindings in Zod 4 catalogs, but they'll render as [object Object] until the web_core pin moves past 🚀 Feature Request: [ADK] Accessing adk.custom_metadata #2753.
  2. Mixed Zod versions now throw. A Zod 4 z.object whose members are web_core's CommonSchemas (Zod 3), e.g. z.object({ text: CommonSchemas.DynamicString }), used to convert to an empty schema. With this branch, buildCatalogContextValue and extractCatalogComponentSchemas throw Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'def'), and react-core's A2UICatalogContext calls the former during render. It's an edge case (none of the showcase catalogs mix versions, and rendering fails for that shape anyway with Zod's own Invalid element at key "children": expected a Zod schema), but a clearer error, or a fallback per component, might be friendlier. That seems related to CodeRabbit's "reject unconvertible schemas" note.
  3. Types: with Zod 4 installed, createCatalog(definitions, …) fails with TS2345, because CatalogComponentDefinition.props is the renderer's own Zod 3 ZodObject. Even zod/v3 from the app's Zod 4 package fails, since it's a different copy. Not this PR's job, just noting that it isn't covered yet.

Given (1), I think the docs should keep steering people to Zod 3 for now. The fixed-schema page's npm install @copilotkit/a2ui-renderer zod installs Zod 4 today. Would a one-line change to zod@^3 plus a short note be welcome? I'm happy to send it, in whatever wording fits once this lands.

My test files are small vitest files; I can share them if they'd help.
