Summary

The hard rules now judge two command-indirection forms they used to skip (#455).

find -exec / -execdir / -ok / -okdir

Expansion forms: option (a), clear shapes only

  • Some expansions are a whole word and print a bare program name: $(printf NAME), $(echo 'NAME'), `echo NAME`, and ${X:-NAME} (also -, =, :=). Any of these may be double-quoted as one word. Each one is replaced by NAME, and the result becomes an extra code subject. The same applies to eval of a literal echo/printf.
  • The rewritten text is judged like any other command, so the name only counts in command position. echo $(printf sudo), grep ${X:-sudo} f, echo '$(printf sudo) id', ${EDITOR:-vi} file and eval "$(ssh-agent -s)" all stay allowed.
  • Out of scope, documented in the docstring and CHANGELOG, and pinned as allowed by tests: X=sudo; $X id, $(cat f) id, $(printf '%s' sudo) id, $(echo -n sudo) id and eval "$(cat f)". Judging any of these would mean evaluating the expansion.

I stayed out of decide, the deadline layer and the filesystem lookups (#460).

False-positive impact

  • The fix(guard): hard rules judge shell-wrapper bodies and env/nice/timeout (#430) #440 benign suites (WRAPPED_BENIGN_COMMANDS, BENIGN_STDIN_OPERAND_COMMANDS, the wrapper-cluster benign list) are unchanged and pass.
  • Full suite: 3621 passed, 12 skipped.
  • An extra 30-command benign probe showed no new false positives. x=$(printf sudo) was already denied on main before this change. That is a pre-existing false positive from the assignment skip, and this PR does not touch it.

Test evidence

  • New tests: test_hard_rules_judge_find_exec_and_expanded_programs, with 28 commands each tokenized both POSIX and Windows style, and test_hard_rules_leave_find_args_and_unread_expansions_alone, with 23 commands. With the two new helpers stubbed out, 54 of the 56 deny cases fail. The other two (bash -c 'find . -exec sudo id \;' and its Windows twin) were already denied through the opaque-site path.
  • probe453.py: the find row now prints ok. Every other row keeps its result, including the known FP allow 'source <(grep -v sudo .env)'.
  • Timings stay under 0.1 s. perf446.py: hard rules 0.00 to 0.01 s. probe459.py: unchanged, at most 0.02 s. Adversarial cases timed the same with the helpers on and off: 2,000 -exec sudo clauses took 0.036 s against 0.029 s, and 5,000 $(printf sudo) id; took 0.147 s against 0.131 s.
  • ruff check .: clean. mypy src: clean. pytest -q: 3621 passed, 12 skipped.

Closes #455

…mes (#455)

The hard rules now judge the words after -exec/-execdir/-ok/-okdir, up to
\; ';' or {} +, as a command, so `find . -exec sudo id \;` is denied. The
split reuses the stage walk's -exec cut.

An expansion that is a whole word and prints a bare program name
($(printf NAME), $(echo NAME), `echo NAME`, ${X:-NAME} and friends) is
replaced by that name before judging, as is eval of a literal echo/printf.
The name counts only in command position, so `echo $(printf sudo)` and
`grep ${X:-sudo} f` stay allowed. Expansions that need evaluating ($X,
$(cat f), format strings, echo -n) are out of scope and pinned by tests.

Bumps to 10.2.26.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Hard-rule checks now detect privileged and destructive commands in find execution actions and in supported literal command-name expansions, including certain eval cases.
    • Literal command names are checked only when they appear in command position; unsupported or non-literal expansions remain out of scope.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the backlog and changelog to reflect the shipped behavior.
  • Chores
    • Updated the project version to 10.2.26.

Walkthrough

The guard now evaluates commands extracted from find execution actions and recognizes supported literal program-name expansions in hard-rule checks. Tests cover these cases and allowed non-command or unsupported expansion forms. Release notes and package metadata identify version 10.2.26.

The guard adds find -exec-family commands and supported statically expanded command text to hard-rule subjects. Tests cover denied commands and benign or unsupported cases under POSIX and Windows tokenization. The changelog and backlog record the change, and package version values are updated to 10.2.26.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to acee8

The change extends the guard to judge commands inside find -exec and supported literal expansions. One regex used on the hard-rule path could be slow on pathological eval input. It is mergeable, but the pattern should be tightened.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to acee8

The change strengthens command checks without adding execution privileges. Existing authorization-scope limitations remain, and complete enforcement across the newly recognized forms has not been established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected boundary is authorization of guard-mediated local shell actions, including commands requesting privileges available in the execution environment. The new helpers analyze text; they do not themselves execute commands or grant credentials.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Joining extracted find actions into one subject permits an opt-in on one action to satisfy authorization for a sibling action. This leaves some previously unjudged find commands allowed rather than demonstrating increased exposure relative to the base. A preceding command’s opt-in can likewise cover a rewritten literal expansion under the existing command-wide opt-in semantics.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Extracted subjects pass through the existing hard-rule matcher and denial path. Command-position filtering remains in force, and an opt-in only skips its associated rule, not unrelated destructive rules.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing enforcement path retains seed-rule fallback when policy loading fails and denies command-position searches that exceed their budget. These controls remain centralized rather than being reimplemented by the new extractors.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If per-action opt-in isolation is intended, preserve each extracted find action as a separate authorization subject and explicitly define whether an opt-in on a separate command may cover later literal expansions.

EM review: changes requested (Flatline Roundtable: HAL9000, Cortana, TheDixieFlatline)

The find -exec path and the literal-expansion idea are both sound. I verified every finding below on acee821 with guard._hard_policy_verdict. Every input in items 3–6 currently gets no verdict, and each must be denied as sudo-use-fleet-sudo.

Must fix

  1. _EVAL_LITERAL_RE is super-linear and runs outside the budget (Cortana).

  2. One -exec command's opt-in covers another's sudo (HAL9000). In find . -exec env OMI_SUDO_OK=1 true \; -exec sudo id \;, the commands are joined with \n into one subject.

    • Fix: use code.extend(commands), one subject per action.
    • Test: the opt-in must stay per-command.
  3. The expanded text is never re-walked (Cortana). These are missed:

    • $(printf bash) -c 'sudo id'
    • ${X:-sh} -c 'sudo id'
    • $(printf find) . -exec sudo id \;

Run the expanded command back through the subject search, one level only. _literal_name can't produce a new expansion, so this terminates.

  4. More expansion operators (HAL9000). ${X:+NAME} and ${X+NAME} are missed, so ${X:+sudo} id gets through.

  5. More eval shapes (Dixie). These are missed:

    • eval `echo sudo id`
    • eval " $(echo sudo id)" (leading blanks inside the quotes)
    • eval "\$(echo sudo id)" (deferred: eval itself runs the substitution)
  6. find argument traps (Dixie, HAL9000). These are missed:

    • find . -name -exec -exec sudo id \;: a primary's value happens to be the word -exec.
    • find . '-exec' sudo id \;: a quoted action word.

For find, judge the text after every -exec/-execdir/-ok/-okdir occurrence, quoted or not, as a candidate command, rather than trusting a single split. Over-judging is the safe direction.

Should fix

  • Restrict the action split to find stages for the hard rules (HAL9000). mytool -ok sudo … shouldn't become a subject.
  • Apply the expansion rewrite to stdin-script words too (echo '$(printf sudo) id' | bash) if it's cheap (Cortana).
  • Derive _EXEC_ACTION_RE from _EXEC_ACTIONS so they can't drift (Cortana).

Tests

  • Every input above goes in the deny table, under both POSIX and Windows tokenizing.
  • Parametrize the benign list over windows_tokens too (HAL9000).
  • Fail-open: make _expanded_command_text and _find_exec_commands raise, and assert that judging still completes with partial subjects (Dixie).
  • Pin the remaining out-of-scope forms in the CHANGELOG list with tests: $(command printf sudo), $(printf -- sudo), $(/usr/bin/printf sudo) and $(echo -e sudo). Either deny them or pin them as documented allows.

Version: at push time, set it one patch above origin/main. Main is 10.2.25; #466 (#460) may take 10.2.26 first.

Proudly Made in Nebraska. Go Big Red! 🌽 https://xkcd.com/2347/

- _EVAL_LITERAL_RE matches each blank run one way only (words are
blank-separated non-blank runs; the in-quote blanks match only when
quoted), so `eval "$(echo ` plus a long blank run is linear, not cubic.
- Each find action's command is its own subject, so one command's opt-in
  never covers another's sudo.
- The expanded text is searched again, one level deep: $(printf bash) -c,
  ${X:-sh} -c and $(printf find) . -exec are judged.
- ${X:+NAME} and ${X+NAME}; eval of backticks, of "\$(...)" and with
blanks inside the quotes; echo -n/-e/-E, printf --, a path or
  command/builtin as the printer.
- find stages only: every -exec/-execdir/-ok/-okdir word, quoted or not,
starts a candidate command, so a primary's value or a quoted action word
cannot hide one. mytool -ok sudo x stays an argument.
- Stdin-script words get the literal expansion too.
- Tests: deny table under POSIX and Windows tokenizing, the benign list
under both, per-command opt-in, fail-open when either new search raises,
  and linear-time pins at 10,000 and 100,000.

Fixer response to the EM review (eb2156e)

All six must-fix items, all three should-fix items, and the test requests are done. The probe prints ok on every row. The "cubic" rows now take 0.00 s at n=200, 400, 800 and 3,200, and 0.02 s at 100,000.

Must fix

  1. _EVAL_LITERAL_RE is linear now. See src/omind/guard.py:4063.
    • The words are blank-separated runs of non-blank characters (_EVAL_WORD), so no two adjacent parts can match the same blank.
    • The blanks inside the double quotes match only when the quotes are present: (?:(?P<dq>")[ \t]*)? and (?(dq)[ \t]*").
    • _EXPANDED_NAME_RE (guard.py:4047) was already unambiguous and is pinned too.
    • Test: test_find_exec_and_expansion_searches_stay_linear, at 10,000 and 100,000 over six shapes (_LONG_EXPANSIONS_455, tests/test_guard.py:3691). It runs both regexes directly and then the full verdict, under _hard_time_limit(traced_bound(1.0)).
  2. Each -exec command is now its own subject. _find_exec_commands returns a list (guard.py:3974), and the caller does code.extend(...) (guard.py:4128).
    • Test: test_find_exec_commands_are_one_subject_each.
    • Both orders are in the deny table, and find . -exec env OMI_SUDO_OK=1 sudo id \; -exec ls \; is in the benign list.
  3. The expanded text is searched again, one level deep. _hard_rule_subjects now delegates to _subjects_of(command, expand=...) (guard.py:4260).
  4. ${X:+NAME} and ${X+NAME} are handled. The operator class is now [-=+] (guard.py:4051).
  5. The three missing eval shapes are handled.
    • eval `echo sudo id` matches through the bt group and its conditional close.
    • eval " $(echo sudo id)" matches because blanks are allowed inside the quotes.
    • eval "\$(echo sudo id)" matches through \\?\$\(.
  6. find argument traps. In a find stage, every -exec/-execdir/-ok/-okdir token starts a candidate, whether it was quoted or not. Each candidate is re-quoted with shlex.join.
    • The candidate ends at ;, \; or {} +, or at the next action word. Each word therefore joins at most one candidate, which keeps this linear.
    • Each segment is tokenized once, from its first find. A heredoc body the stage owns is excluded.
    • -name -exec -exec sudo id \;, '-exec' and "-exec" are all denied.
    • find . -exec grep -e 'a; sudo id' {} + stays allowed, because the quoted argument stays one word.

Should fix

  • Restricted to find. Only _FIND_PROGRAMS = {find, gfind} stages are split (guard.py:3968). mytool -ok sudo x and mytool -exec sudo x are in the benign list.
  • Stdin-script words. _add_words (guard.py:4093) also appends the expansion of the producer words. echo '$(printf sudo) id' | bash is in the deny table.
  • _EXEC_ACTION_RE drift. The regex is gone. The split matches tokens against _EXEC_ACTIONS directly, so there is only one list.

Tests

  • Every input from this review is in FIND_EXEC_AND_EXPANSION_HARD_COMMANDS (tests/test_guard.py:3538). That table runs under both POSIX and Windows tokenizing.
  • The benign list (test_hard_rules_leave_find_args_and_unread_expansions_alone) is now parametrized over windows_tokens too.
  • Fail-open: test_find_exec_and_expansion_failures_keep_other_subjects patches _expanded_command_text or _find_exec_commands to raise. In each case the subject search finishes and the other path still denies. _find_exec_commands runs under its own contextlib.suppress, and expansion runs in its own try before the local-shell search.
  • Out-of-scope forms: I chose to deny these, not pin them as allowed. The literal can't contain \ or %, so printf --, a path, command/builtin, and echo -n/-e/-E cannot change what gets printed. $(command printf sudo), $(printf -- sudo), $(/usr/bin/printf sudo), $(echo -e sudo) and $(echo -n sudo) are now in the deny table.
    • $(echo -n sudo) id moved out of the PR's own out-of-scope allow list. Command substitution strips the trailing newline anyway, so its output is identical.
    • CHANGELOG updated to match.

Gates

  • ruff check .: passes.
  • mypy src (strict): no issues.
  • pytest -q: 3,706 passed, 12 skipped.
  • ruff format: only the existing rsync block in guard.py, which is already unformatted on main.
  • perf446.py and probe459.py: every row is at or under 0.02 s.
  • probe453.py: the find row is ok. Its one FP row (source <(grep -v sudo .env)) has no $, backtick or find, so this change doesn't touch it.

Version

origin/main is 10.2.25 and the branch is based on it at 10.2.26, which is one patch above. pyproject.toml, __init__.py and uv.lock agree.

EM merge for #455. Reviewed by the Flatline Roundtable (HAL9000, Cortana, TheDixieFlatline), plus one fix round.

Probes on the final head (eb2156e). These are now denied as sudo-use-fleet-sudo:

  • find -exec, -execdir, -ok and -okdir, including the -name -exec trap and a quoted action word.
  • A program name built from a literal expansion: $(printf|echo NAME), backticks, ${X:-|=|:+|+NAME}, and eval of a literal echo/printf (backtick, blank-padded and deferred forms).
  • An expansion that becomes a shell or find, which is now walked again.

Each -exec command needs its own opt-in. The eval regex is now linear: 0.02 s at 100k (it was cubic). Benign forms stay allowed: command -v sudo, find -exec grep sudo, echo $(printf sudo), ${EDITOR:-vi}, eval "$(ssh-agent -s)". Every earlier probe suite is unchanged.

Documented out of scope (would need real evaluation): X=sudo; $X id, $(cat f) id, eval "$(cat f)".

All 23 CI jobs are green. Releasing as 10.2.26.
