Summary

  • omind setup --agent grok registers the omi MCP server in ~/.grok/config.toml, installs lifecycle hooks in the wholly owned file ~/.grok/hooks/omind.json, installs the packaged skill under ~/.grok/skills/omind/, and writes a managed bootstrap rule at ~/.grok/rules/omind.md. $GROK_HOME overrides ~/.grok. omind doctor --agent grok checks that wiring. Grok does not inject SessionStart stdout, so the rules file is the primer.
  • The guard accepts Grok's camelCase hook events (toolName, toolInput, sessionId, hookEventName), including when Grok runs the existing Claude-compatible hook. Built-in names map onto the names the guard already classifies, and omi__… counts as a memory consult. A deny is {"decision":"deny","reason":…} on stdout with exit 0, so the guard text is what Grok shows. The embedding model load no longer prints a Hugging Face progress bar onto that channel.
  • omind quickstart --agent grok prints the same MCP table, hook file, rules block, and skill path.

Closes #470

Proudly Made in Nebraska. Go Big Red! 🌽 https://xkcd.com/2347/

omind setup --agent grok registers the omi MCP server in ~/.grok/config.toml,
lifecycle hooks in ~/.grok/hooks/omind.json, the packaged skill, and a home
rule at ~/.grok/rules/omind.md. The guard accepts Grok's camelCase hook
events, including when Grok runs the Claude-compatible hook, maps built-in
tool names onto the names it already classifies, and counts omi__ tools as
consults. A deny is stdout JSON with exit 0, so the guard reason is what
Grok shows. The embedding model load no longer prints a Hugging Face
progress bar onto that channel. omind quickstart --agent grok prints the
same wiring.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Grok Build support, including setup, quickstart guidance, health checks, and OMI memory and guard integrations.
    • Grok guard hooks now recognize its event formats and return denials in the expected format.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Reduced embedding-model download progress output in the terminal.
  • Release
    • Updated the version to 10.3.0.

Walkthrough

This release adds Grok Build support for guard payloads, setup, diagnosis, and quickstart output. It also updates release documentation and package versions to 10.3.0.

Changes

Grok Build integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Grok guard payloads and decisions
src/omind/harness.py, src/omind/adapters.py, src/omind/hooks.py, src/omind/embed.py, tests/test_grok_client.py, tests/test_harness.py, tests/test_adapters.py
The guard recognizes Grok camelCase events, translates their fields and tool names, and renders denials as JSON on stdout. Grok also uses the existing PostToolUse context-injection path. Embedding model loading disables progress bars only when the related environment variables are unset.
Grok setup and diagnosis
src/omind/agents.py, src/omind/seeds.py, src/omind/cli.py, tests/test_grok_client.py
Setup registers the MCP server, installs five lifecycle hooks, the packaged skill, and managed rules. It supports $GROK_HOME, verifies the installed files, and adds Grok doctor checks.
Quickstart and release documentation
src/omind/quickstart.py, tests/test_quickstart.py, README.md, BACKLOG.md, CHANGELOG.md, pyproject.toml, src/omind/__init__.py
The quickstart renders Grok setup instructions and configuration snippets. Documentation describes the integration, and the package version changes to 10.3.0.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0095c

Grok setup is generally mergeable, but it can discard existing hooks or rules content when those files cannot be read. Make those cases fail safely before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 0095c

The integration changes tool authorization and persistent configuration. Turn preparation can credit memory consultation without delivering the retrieved instructions, while prompt-rule updates can discard existing instructions after read failures. Exposure is bounded by the local user’s existing tool and vault permissions.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new integration can credit a relevant memory consultation without delivering its instructions. Grok provisioning installs UserPromptSubmit preflight while explicitly documenting that allowing output from that event is not injected. Preflight records the consultation and, on injection paths, records the note as injected before emitting that output. Subsequent actions can therefore observe a cleared consultation gate and previously supplied memory that the client never received. The bootstrap instruction to consult memory first is guidance, not reconciliation of this authorization state. Hard-policy checks remain separate; a blanket bypass of hard denies is not established.
  • Low · reliability · inferred: The new prompt-rule update path does not preserve its ownership boundary across read failures. An unreadable or invalid-UTF-8 rules file is treated as empty and atomically replaced with the bootstrap, potentially deleting surrounding operator instructions when replacement is permitted. The same read-modify-write path lacks the locking used for shared MCP configuration, so overlapping edits can also be lost. This affects a file documented as loaded into the system prompt; normal preservation tests do not cover these failure states.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is the local client’s prompt rules, session consultation state, and tools operating with the user’s existing permissions and configured vault access. The evidence does not establish additional tenant, environment, IAM, or remote-service authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A turn whose prompt retrieves a relevant note can receive consultation credit before the context is emitted. Under the documented Grok event behavior, that output is not delivered, leaving authorization state ahead of actual instruction delivery. This is an integration control gap, not proof that an attacker can bypass every hard rule or gain new operating-system privileges.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Grok translation derives effective tool identity from dispatcher arguments and maps bare OMI names to the OMI namespace. The existing normalizer also accepts an explicit consultation flag. These decisions rely on the hook producer’s identity contract; the inspected code alone does not demonstrate attacker control of the complete event envelope or an independently reachable identity-forgery attack.
  • inferred — Because camelCase-key presence can override the configured response format, a mixed-shaped event can produce an exit-zero Grok denial for another client. Translation and Verdict preservation are established, but the external consumer’s treatment of that mismatched response is not; an actual denial bypass remains unverified.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Malformed guard JSON is denied before normal processing. Shared configuration parsing refuses malformed TOML, hook health requires exact wiring, and individual configuration writes are atomic. These controls reduce accidental protection loss but do not reconcile undelivered consultation context or protect surrounding rules after a failed read.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate turn reset and retrieval from consultation credit for events that cannot deliver context. Credit delivery through a supported client mechanism or an actual memory-tool result, and keep injection history consistent with that delivery boundary.
  • proposed — Preserve existing prompt rules on read/decode errors, serialize their read-modify-write updates, and validate the managed body rather than marker presence alone. Explicitly distinguish repairable wholly owned hook files from rules containing operator-owned text.
