2. Upload Files/Folders

๐Ÿš€ Getting Started

Prerequisites

  • Go 1.25 or later
  • Node.js 20+ (for frontend development)
  • Docker (optional, for containerized deployment)

Backend Setup

  1. Clone the repository

  2. Install dependencies

    go mod download
  3. Configure environment variables

The app ships as a single self-contained Docker image that serves both the React frontend and the Go API, so any Docker-capable host (Render, Fly.io, Koyeb, Hugging Face Spaces, a VPSโ€ฆ) can run it with one container.

Note: USERNAME is read from the process environment. On machines where the OS sets a USERNAME variable (e.g. some shells), you must set it explicitly to avoid the server picking up your login name.

Option A โ€” Render (free, recommended for a quick demo)

A ready-to-use Render Blueprint is included:

  1. Push this repository to GitHub.
  2. At https://dashboard.render.com select New โ†’ Blueprint, choose the repository and branch (main), then Apply.
  3. Render reads render.yaml (web service, /health health check, auto-deploy) and builds the image.
  4. Open the service's Environment tab and copy the auto-generated PASSWORD.
  5. Sign in at the live URL with username admin and that generated PASSWORD.

Free-tier caveats: Render's free web service sleeps after ~15 min of inactivity and its filesystem is ephemeral โ€” uploaded files are lost on restart/redeploy. This is fine for a demo; for persistent storage enable a paid plan or mount a Render Disk at /data.

Option B โ€” Any Docker host

  • CI Workflow: .github/workflows/ci.yml

    • Builds and tests the backend (Go) on push/PR to master/main
    • Builds the frontend (Vite/React) to ensure it compiles
    • Publishes the frontend dist/ as a build artifact
  • Release Workflow: .github/workflows/release.yml

    • Triggers on tags that match v*.*.* (e.g., v1.0.0)
    • Builds a static Linux-amd64 backend binary at build/file-share-server
    • Builds the frontend and packages it as build/frontend-dist.tar.gz
    • Creates a GitHub Release and uploads both artifacts automatically
