The four docs pages can only be read one Markdown file at a time on GitHub. There is no home page and no search, and three pages said things the code does not do: the cache was described as global when it lives per browser session, usage.md never said script.R is left out of the Docker image, and Troubleshooting got wrong which elements get merged.

This PR publishes the docs as a MkDocs Material site at https://geiserx.github.io/ePubLangMerger/.

What a first-time visitor gets

  • A home page with the banner, one line of badges, a four-sentence pitch and four cards (Getting started, Usage, Command line, Troubleshooting). Then short sections: what it does, how it runs, what it does not do, privacy, getting help, license. The home page hides the side nav. The table of contents stays.
  • Tabs grouped as Home, Get started (Getting started, Usage), Reference (How it works, Troubleshooting) and Development. The woven mark from the banner is the header logo and the favicon.
  • A new Development page covering the tests, the image build, releases and the docs build.
  • Troubleshooting corrections: a <p> inside a <blockquote> or <div> is merged. Chapters outside OEBPS/*.xhtml are not, and the page now explains what that looks like. A same-named pair in the same session comes back from the cache.
  • The README Documentation list now points at the site pages, and the Features line on the cache says "in the same browser session".
  • docs.yml runs mkdocs build --strict on every PR (GitHub-hosted, no path filter) and deploys a Pages artifact on pushes to main that touch the docs. Dependabot now watches docs/requirements-docs.txt.

No screenshot yet. The released 1.1.1 image has no Rcompression, so a merge in Docker fails at the zip step, and a real screenshot of a merged book has to wait for that fix.

Home page HTML: side nav hidden 1, table of contents hidden 0, Usage side nav hidden 0, hidden H1 1, logo references 2, tabs 4. I rendered the home page at 1440x1000 and Troubleshooting at 1440x900 and read both screenshots. Home has the logo and name in the header, four tabs, no left column, the banner, the badges, the pitch, the four cards and the table of contents. Troubleshooting shows the Reference side nav and its own table of contents.

Pages hosting

Pages was off, with no gh-pages branch and nothing served at this path, so there was no old URL or manifest.json to keep. I enabled Pages with the GitHub Actions source (build_type: workflow). The first deploy happens when this merges. Until then the site links in the README return 404. HTTPS enforcement can't be switched on until GitHub has issued the certificate. github.io serves HTTPS either way.

Deviations from the plan

  • Branch docs/mkdocs-site and three commits (site skeleton, home page and README, workflow), not docs/site and one commit.
  • Built with Python 3.14 on the mini. CI builds with 3.13 from the template.
  • Planted the broken link in usage.md with [planted](no-such-page.md), not by renaming a link in index.md.
  • Pages was enabled when the PR opened, not right before the merge.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added a published documentation site with setup, usage, command-line, troubleshooting, and development guides.
    • Expanded guidance on how ePubLangMerger handles content, cached results, privacy, and file-size limits.
    • Updated the README with links to the documentation and clarified browser-session caching.
  • New Features
    • Added automated documentation builds and deployment to GitHub Pages. Pull requests validate the build without deploying.

…s and mark

mkdocs.yml groups the pages into Home, Get started, Reference and Development, fails the build on any broken link, anchor or unreachable page, and takes its logo and favicon from the woven tile of banner.svg. The new Development page covers tests, the image build and releases.
The home page is the banner, badges, the pitch and four cards. Troubleshooting now says what the code does: a <p> inside a blockquote is merged, chapters outside OEBPS/*.xhtml are not, and the cache lives per browser session. Usage says script.R is not in the image.

The site is mergeable with a small documentation correction: explain that different books can reuse a cached output name and that reloading reliably clears the session cache.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a5ed4

Pull-request builds are separated from publishing credentials, and publication requires a successful build. However, manual publication is not restricted to main by the workflow itself; its effective limits depend on repository protection settings that were not available. No verified unauthorized publication or newly exposed upload service was established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: The publication workflow does not enforce its documented main-only provenance boundary for manual runs. Both artifact upload and deployment exclude only pull-request events, so a manually selected repository branch is eligible under the workflow logic. Effective prevention of non-main publication depends on Pages environment restrictions not supplied here. Manual dispatch requires repository authorization; an ordinary external pull request cannot publish through this path.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The added explicit write authority targets this repository's Pages publication and OIDC identity. A publication-policy failure could replace its public documentation, but the inspected workflow does not grant repository-content write authority or deploy the application image.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An external contributor can influence build inputs through a pull request, but that event skips Pages artifact upload and deployment. The unresolved publication path instead requires an authorized actor to manually dispatch a repository ref and depends on the Pages environment allowing it; unauthorized exploitation was not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Build execution uses contents-read permission and disables persisted checkout credentials. Pages and OIDC write permissions are scoped to the separate deployment job, which uses the github-pages environment and excludes pull-request events.
  • observed — The home page states that the application has no login and can be used by anyone reaching port 3838. That statement and the unchanged Compose port mapping do not establish actual production reachability, reverse-proxy authentication or network controls; the supplied deployment/authentication proof gap remains unresolved.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The build-success dependency prevents a failed validation job from reaching the deployment job. Recovery from deployment interruption and ordering between manually dispatched different refs are not fully specified by the workflow, so an atomic rollback guarantee cannot be concluded from this evidence.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If main-only publication is intended, apply a trusted-ref restriction to artifact upload and deployment, and verify matching github-pages environment branch rules. If manual branch publication is intentional, document its authorization and ordering policy instead.
