This extension let's your phpBB forum check for new posts while reading the last page of a topic. Check interval is configurable through ACP.
Copy the extension to phpBB/ext/ger/livetopicupdate
Go to "ACP" > "Customise" > "Extensions" and enable the "Live topic update" extension.
