Description of your pull request and other information

Closes #2440. Targets main, on top of #2441 (merged).

Adds pcapkit.foundation.reassembly.dtls.DTLS, keyed by UDP 4-tuple plus DTLS epoch. DTLS.read(reassembly=..., flow=...) decodes the fragment that completes a handshake message into ClientHello/ServerHello. Overlapping fragments are accepted.

Opt-in only. Automatic Extractor-level wiring needs a toolkit adapter and changes to all eight capture engines, so it is left as a follow-up.

Ran: tests/foundation/reassembly/ 197 passed (897 subtests), including the new overlap test, which fails when overlapping fragments are dropped. isort -l100 clean on changed files.
Not run: make test, make pylint, make mypy.

Rebased onto #2441's current tip (your branch had diverged since #2441 was rebased twice after you forked from it) — old head 59937ed6b → new cbc6e7fb3. Resolved one real conflict in dtls.py's docstring (your versionchanged block vs. a concurrent fix stripping a bare issue-ref body — kept both, cleanly). Also stripped the changelog edit per #2449's new centralized-changelog practice (this instruction should have reached you earlier but a messaging issue on my end meant it didn't — not your fault). Verified directly: diff against #2441's current tip is now a clean 7 files (just the reassembly engine + dtls.py wiring + the test file), and the full targeted suite (49 passed/63 subtests, including all 9 new DTLS-reassembly tests) is green under a scratch venv with the correct dictdumper>=0.8.5. Cross-review dispatched.

Fixed and verified directly (new head 158be853e): all 3 blocking items resolved — the missing __all__ export, the epoch≥1 encrypted-record corruption (now passes through unchanged instead of iterating as ints), and the round-trip byte-exactness break (completing record now slices back to its own fragment bounds). All should-fix items applied too: stale-session reuse guarded by length/msg_type agreement, bounded 60s default timeout, decode-failure fallback to raw bytes, flow now required when reassembly is passed. 1506 passed in tests/project/ (1 pre-existing unrelated failure, confirmed identical on unmodified main), pylint 10.00/10 on every touched file, mypy zero new errors.

Cross-review (different model, adversarial), round 3, came back NEEDS CHANGES. All 6 round-2 items are confirmed fixed for well-formed input, but the new conditional branches left gaps:

Blocking:

  1. Round-trip still breaks when a fragment's fragment_offset + fragment_length runs past the message's declared length — the exactness check in _make_tls_handshake_messages never fires for this case. Fix: only replace the body when the slice is provably within bounds, keep raw otherwise.
  2. Round 3's new branches have zero test coverage — the decode-failure fallback, the new 60s-timeout path, and the msg_type-only restart are all untested.
  3. The restart-on-mismatch branch silently drops the displaced partial message instead of submitting it as PARTIAL first — a real message gets lost, not just corrupted.

Should-fix:
4. Same-length session reuse still corrupts (old second half + new first half completes as a valid-looking but wrong message) — the code comment overclaims what the restart guard actually prevents.
5. Regression this round: the 60s timeout misquotes RFC 6347 §4.2.4.1 (that's a minimum backoff cap, not a hard ceiling) and runs per-buffer from the first fragment, not per-message — an unrelated stale message can expire a live one whose fragments legitimately span 60+ seconds. Round 2's unlimited timeout didn't have this failure mode.
6. The flow-required check only fires on cleartext handshake records, not alert/application-data/encrypted-handshake, despite the docstring saying it's required unconditionally.
7. Pre-existing (round 1): unbounded buffer allocation from a declared length lets 520 bytes on the wire allocate 320MiB — IP's reassembly caps this at 64KiB, DTLS doesn't. Fine as a follow-up issue, not blocking.
8. Doc accuracy: dtls.rst's "one fragment per record" claim is wrong (RFC allows several, code already handles it), and two more RFC section citations need correcting (§4.2.2→§4.2.3, and an overstated §4.1 claim).

Dispatching a fix now.

Fixed and verified directly (new head 679aa4146): the overrun round-trip bug is gone (verified by reverting the guard and confirming the new test fails exactly as predicted), the displaced-partial-message loss is fixed (submits the old partial as its own PARTIAL result before replacing it, mirroring TCP reassembly's pattern), and 6 new tests cover all of round 3's previously-untested branches. The timeout is now a per-fragment idle deadline (not pinned to first-fragment arrival) raised to 120s, with the RFC citation corrected to describe it as a floor not a ceiling. flow-required now fires unconditionally. Filed the buffer-size-cap follow-up as #2468, labeled. 499/499 reassembly+application tests passing (was 11 pre-existing failures from missing samples, now fully green), 2102 passed in tests/project/.

Round 4 review: NEEDS CHANGES. The 3 round-3 blockers are genuinely fixed. New issues: (1) no test for round 4's own idle-deadline change, (2) a new wrong §4.2.2 claim introduced this round (message_seq doesn't reset per-epoch mid-flight, no code impact since encrypted records never reach the engine, but the doc claim is false), (3) a stale Buffer.timestamp docstring. Should-fix: round 3's same-length-splice item was silently dropped without a mention either way; #2468's repro numbers need correcting (16MiB not 320MiB for the literal repro, though a length cap fixes the real variant too). Fixing now.

JarryShaw added a commit that referenced this pull request Oct 30, 2026
1. Add test for idle-deadline extension: three fragments at t=0, t=100, t=200s
complete with 120s timeout, verifying max(buf.timestamp, TS) logic extends
deadline on each arrival. Fails if reverted back to buf.timestamp.

2. Remove incorrect claim about epoch changes and message_seq numbering.
RFC 6347 §4.2.2 says message_seq restarts per handshake, not per epoch/flight.
Epoch changes begin a fresh buffer (for replay protection), not a new flight.
Updated in both dtls.py (lines 49-54) and data/dtls.py (lines 24-32).

3. Fix stale docstring for Buffer.timestamp: was claiming "first fragment,
doesn't extend deadline", now correctly states "most recent fragment with
idle deadline". Reflects round 4's max(buf.timestamp, TS) behavior.

4. Address same-length-splice known limitation: soften overclaim that guard
against different length/type prevents all splicing. Explicitly document
that same-length/type fragments from displaced messages can still splice
into newer buffers -- a known gap resolved by #2451 tracking.

5. Fix test docstring nit in test_epoch_change_opens_a_fresh_buffer: was
incorrectly stating "sequence numbers and fragment offsets reset" (old,
fixed behavior), now correctly describes epoch change buffer isolation.

6. Item 6 (__protocol_name__ comment) already addressed in current codebase.

Fixed round 5's items (new head 3dd077d88). Now CONFLICTING against its parent branch, which is mid-restructure (#2441) — holding the rebase until that finishes, then rebasing in the same pass.

Still CONFLICTING against its parent branch. #2441's restructure has now landed (head 077f9e010) and is in cross-review. Unblocks when #2441's review reaches review: good-to-go; then I rebase this onto it, and #2469 onto this.

GOOD TO GO (Sonnet, af22752b3). The commit removes only the 120 s __timeout__, its timeout init argument, the expire call and the idle-deadline refresh in DTLS reassembly. RFC 6347 section 4.2.3 and RFC 9147 section 5.5 contain no reassembly timeout, checked by keyword search of the fetched text. Base contract is intact: Reassembly keeps math.inf, DTLS.submit keeps its TIMEOUT branch, IP and TCP untouched. Narrow DTLS and timeout tests on this head: 37 passed, 7 subtests. No DTLS caller passes a timeout argument. Merge is yours.

Red required check on af22752b3, fix held. Python 3.15 fails on the toctree test in tests/project/test_conventions_doc_claims.py:331: the ANCHORS list lacks protocol-member-order. The one-line fix is already on main (eaddd9061); this branch predates it. The same one-line commit is staged on this branch as a fast-forward and will be pushed once the Actions queue drops below 20 (currently 21). The review: good-to-go label stays until the push, then the head gets re-reviewed.

Rebase note: the red check was the toctree test. This branch predated the convention doc, so the one-line fix was not enough: 9 convention tests failed. Fix: merged origin/main into the branch (a merge commit, not a rebase, so the push is a fast-forward). Merged head runs 71 passed in the convention and DTLS reassembly files. Patch-id of the PR's own commit is unchanged. Owner can merge once the review passes.

GOOD TO GO (Sonnet, 8ddec9ec9). The merge of origin/main changes nothing in the PR's DTLS files; its only overlap is pep.rst, where main's DCCP lines were added. No __timeout__ remains, and reassembly is not expired by time. Narrow tests: 71 passed, 1 skipped, 242 subtests. Not run: full suite and CI. Merge is yours.

@JarryShaw JarryShaw added the review: good-to-go Cross-review at the current head says ready; CI state is separate label Oct 31, 2026
- add foundation.reassembly.dtls.DTLS, keyed by UDP 4-tuple and DTLS epoch
- DTLS.read decodes the fragment completing a handshake message into
  ClientHello/ServerHello
- overlapping fragments are accepted (RFC 6347 4.2.3)
- opt-in only; Extractor-level wiring left as a follow-up
- isort-clean reassembly and DTLS modules
- DTLS.read reassembles only the datagram's first record (Known Limitations)

Tests: tests/foundation/reassembly/ -- 197 passed, 897 subtests.
RFC 6347 section 4.2.3 and RFC 9147 section 5.5 give DTLS handshake
reassembly no timeout, so the invented 120 second __timeout__ and the
time-based expiry that enforced it are removed. DTLS now inherits the
base default of math.inf, and a buffer is held until its messages
complete.

- reassembly/dtls.py: drop __timeout__ and the timeout argument of
DTLS.__init__; drop the expire() call and the idle-deadline refresh
in reassembly(). submit() keeps its base-contract timeout argument.
- reassembly/data/dtls.py, protocols/application/dtls.py: timestamps
are recorded only and no longer described as driving a timer.
- docs: drop the __timeout__ autoattribute.
- tests: the expiry test now asserts a stale buffer is held and
completes; the idle-deadline test asserts delayed fragments complete.

Rebased onto main after #2443/#2491 landed, new head 2dc85e9fd. The first rebase pass introduced a regression (a duplicate _make_tls_handshake_messages in ssl.py shadowed the one with fragment-slicing logic); fixed by removing the duplicate. Re-verified independently: test_dtls_handshake_reassembly_2440_unit.py 21 passed, test_timeout.py + test_conventions_doc_claims.py 50 passed combined. Re-review needed. The open reassembly-architecture question (point 1 of the new convention) is separate and still unanswered -- this push only keeps the branch current, it does not resolve it.

What needs my decision? Context, recommendations and label.

@JarryShaw

Decision needed: merge #2451 now or hold for rework. Context: the new reassembly-integration convention (point 1) says a protocol class stays unaware of reassembly — IP and TCP already comply, calling into reassembly only through pcapkit.toolkit extraction functions. DTLS.read() violates this: it imports and calls the reassembly engine directly. Points 2 and 3 of that convention (a toolkit helper declaring supported engines, a foundation.analysis parser for the reassembled outcome) are not established anywhere, including IP/TCP, so DTLS does not uniquely lack those — nobody has them. Options: (a) merge #2451 as reviewed, and track the point-1 rework (route DTLS through a toolkit helper like IP/TCP) as a follow-up issue; (b) hold #2451 and rework it to comply before merging. Recommendation: (a). The violation does not change DTLS's external behavior, and IP/TCP took the same shape incrementally rather than up front.

Are we tracking or working on the analysis method for reassembled DTLS body?

@JarryShaw

Copy Markdown
Owner Author

Confirmed standing practice already: no commit pushed today touched CHANGELOG/changelog.md directly, and no worker was briefed to. Answer to the question: point 3 (a foundation.analysis method for the reassembled DTLS body) is not currently tracked. #2496 covers only point 1 (routing through toolkit, like IP/TCP); I scoped points 2/3 out of it since they are not established for IP/TCP either. Options: (a) fold point 3 into #2496's scope; (b) a separate issue for it. Recommendation: (a), since both are the same DTLS-reassembly-architecture rework and would conflict if done as two parallel PRs.

@JarryShaw

Correction, my own error. My earlier "regression fixed, 21 passed" claim was wrong. _make_tls_handshake_messages is still defined twice in ssl.py (lines 452 and 731); the second shadows the fragment-slicing logic the first has. The test file I ran to verify does not exercise the path where the two differ, so it passed despite the bug being present. That false verdict is what the "merge as reviewed" ruling was based on -- holding the PR until this is genuinely fixed and re-verified against the actual duplicate, not just a passing test file.

…ages

SSL._make_tls_handshake_messages was defined twice. Python binds the
second definition (further down the class body), which shadowed the
first and dropped its fragment-slicing logic -- a completing DTLS
fragment's body_bytes was never re-sliced back to its own byte range
before re-encoding.

test_completing_record_rebuilds_byte_exact in
tests/foundation/reassembly/test_dtls_handshake_reassembly_2440_unit.py
exercises exactly this path. Confirmed it fails on the pre-fix head
(2dc85e9) and passes once the broken second definition is removed,
keeping the first (correct) one.
@JarryShaw

Owner Author

Pushed 19b434188: the real fix for the duplicate-method regression. SSL._make_tls_handshake_messages was defined twice; Python bound the second (broken) one, which dropped the first's fragment-slicing logic for a completing DTLS fragment. Deleted the second definition, kept the first.

Verified the regression and the fix directly: test_completing_record_rebuilds_byte_exact in test_dtls_handshake_reassembly_2440_unit.py fails on 2dc85e9fd (the head my earlier GOOD TO GO was based on) and passes on 19b434188. Also ran the full roundtrip/ssl/dtls13 suites (100 tests, 371 subtests) clean. Re-flagging review: needs-changes → owed a fresh review on this head; dispatching one now.

pep.rst still said reassembly was 'Not done' and listed it among the
wave-2 DTLS gaps. This PR implements it (see
pcapkit.foundation.reassembly.dtls.DTLS and the reassembly=/flow=
arguments on pcapkit.protocols.application.dtls.DTLS), so rewrite both
mentions to describe the actual behaviour instead.
@JarryShaw

Pushed 6bbfea964: fixed the stale prose the last review flagged. docs/source/contributing/pep.rst still described DTLS handshake-fragment reassembly as 'Not done' in two places (the DTLS section and the wave-2 summary) even though this PR implements it. Rewrote both to describe the actual reassembly=/flow= opt-in behaviour. test_conventions_doc_claims.py passes clean (34 tests, 259 subtests). That was the only outstanding item from the last review -- no code changes needed.

Cross-review (Sonnet) at 6bbfea964: GOOD TO GO. The only outstanding item -- the stale 'not done' pep.rst prose -- is fixed and accurate: diff touches only pep.rst, the new text correctly describes the real reassembly=/flow= signature and completing-fragment decode behavior, and test_conventions_doc_claims.py passes clean (34 tests, 259 subtests). No other stale DTLS/2440 mentions remain in the file. Ready for merge -- your call.
