Agentic PR Summary
TLDR: Users cannot see how the run configs of a task relate to each other, so this PR adds an Experiment Lineage page. The page draws every run config and links it to the run configs it came from. Targets main. There are no companion PRs.
Before this PR, each run config records its parents in provenance.derived_from_ids, but no screen shows them. A user cannot see how many experiments they tried, or how the agent changed over time. After this PR, a new page at /optimize/[project_id]/[task_id]/experiment_lineage shows the run configs as a tree:
Each run config is a small square. The square shows what changed from its first parent: prompt, tools, skills, model, settings, or a copy.
One square can show more than one change. The square splits into one colored part for each kind of change.
A click on a square opens a side panel with the details of that run config.
Implementation
lib/utils/chart_palette.ts names the echarts default colors as CHART_PALETTE. The two Compare charts now set it explicitly, so their colors stay the same. The lineage page takes its change colors from the same list, so the app keeps one chart palette.
lib/utils/lineage/ holds pure TypeScript modules, each with unit tests. They build the graph, detect each kind of change, split the squares, lay out the tree, calculate zoom and pan, move the selection with the keyboard, and make the display text.
The graph build never throws. It removes links that make a cycle, and it adds one placeholder for each deleted parent.
The page draws one SVG with its own layout and its own zoom and pan. The PR adds no dependency. The echarts tree series allows only one root and no merges. The echarts graph series draws to a canvas, so tests and keyboard focus cannot reach a node.
Lines to the first parent are elbow lines. Lines to other parents are light curves. The curves turn dark when the user hovers on the node. A selection makes every line from a starting point to that node dark.
The side panel has these parts:
A count of parents and children, which opens a dialog that lists them.
A badge that tells if a person or an agent created the run config.
The notes.
"Changed from Parent", in the style of the property list.
The run config properties.
A "Compare to others" link.
There are three entry points:
A "See experiment history." link in the subtitle of the Optimize Run Configurations section.
A "Show in Experiment Lineage" item in the menu of each run config row on the Optimize page.
An "Experiment Lineage" button on the Compare page.
The buttons of the Optimize Run Configurations header move below the title when they do not fit beside it.
The open-pr skill now tells agents to send screenshots to the user in chat. Before, it told agents to host screenshots on a separate branch.

This PR changes two shared components: compare_chart.svelte and compare_radar_chart.svelte. Each now passes color: [...CHART_PALETTE]. The colors are the same as the echarts default colors that they used before.
The PR adds the spec for this project under specs/projects/experiments_page/. The spec includes design reference files: an HTML mock, a JavaScript layout prototype, and two images.
The web ESLint config does not lint .ts files anywhere in the repo. This was true before this PR. The agents linted the new .ts files with a temporary config, and they passed.
Checks: Web lint, format, type check, the full web test suite (3,714 tests) and the web build passed on the last full web run. The small fixes after that run passed their targeted tests and the format check. checks.sh in the agent sandbox fails the OpenAPI schema check and 5 desktop Python test files, because the sandbox Python has no tkinter. This PR changes no Python file. CI runs the full set.
Review work:/spec implement all ran. A separate code review agent reviewed each phase and each round of UI feedback, and the coding agent fixed the findings. Some small fixes went in without a code review: dictated text, comment and doc wording, and the last spacing fix. Agents drove the page in Chromium against a mocked API, because the backend cannot start in the agent sandbox.
Docs and skills updated:.agents/frontend_design_guide.md: chart colors come from CHART_PALETTE. .agents/skills/open-pr/SKILL.md: agents send screenshots to the user in chat, and keep them off GitHub. The docs-sync skill found no other doc that this change makes incorrect.

Adds the functional spec and the UI design for the page that draws every
run config of a task as a lineage graph, plus the design handoff it was
reconciled against. The overview is marked complete.

Apply review answers: the page is Experiment Lineage, it shows no eval
scores, stats sit in their own row under the title, and the panel offers
Compare and Compare to Parent instead of a link to the run config page.

Own SVG graph with pure TypeScript modules for the graph model, change
detection, glyph, layout, viewport and navigation; a shared chart palette
for the Compare charts and this page; entry points on Optimize and Compare.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01HdZSuwV2R5AX6iPNbqbbhy
Add lib/utils/chart_palette.ts with CHART_PALETTE, the nine series
colors of echarts 6.1.0's built-in default palette (checked against
node_modules/echarts/lib/visual/tokens.js). A unit test pins the values
so a change to them is deliberate.
compare_chart.svelte and compare_radar_chart.svelte now pass
color: [...CHART_PALETTE] at the root of their setOption options. The
colors are identical to the echarts default they used before, so the
charts look the same. The only call site is the Compare page.
This is a shared-component change, committed on its own. The decision
is recorded in specs/projects/experiments_page/ui_design.md under "One
Shared Chart Palette": the upcoming Experiment Lineage page takes its
change colors from this same constant, so the app keeps one chart
palette in code.

Phase 1 of the Experiment Lineage page: everything the page needs that
has no UI of its own. No route or component is added yet.
link_builder.ts gains experiment_lineage_link (the page, with an
optional selected run config) and compare_run_configs_link (the Compare
page with given columns, null for an empty one). Both build their query
strings with URLSearchParams; tests read them back the way Compare does.
New pure TypeScript modules under lib/utils/lineage/, with no store
reads and no DOM:
- lineage_graph: builds the graph from run configs. It never throws:
empty, self-referencing and repeated parent ids are dropped, each
missing parent id becomes one shared "deleted" placeholder, and links
that would close a cycle are removed (the newer node's link goes).
Rows are longest paths. Also the edges above a node, filter matching
and the stats summary.
- lineage_changes: detects prompt, tools, skills, model and settings
changes against the primary parent, each independently.
- lineage_glyph: change colors from CHART_PALETTE, labels, and the
rectangles that split a node's square.
- lineage_layout: tree under each node's primary parent, the grid of
run configs with no recorded parent, elbow edge paths, rows.
- lineage_viewport: zoom and pan math with clamping.
- lineage_navigation: arrow-key selection.
- lineage_display: tooltip and detail panel strings.
Cycle breaking, row assignment and the column walk are loops rather
than recursion, so a 1,000-node chain can't overflow the stack.
Test fixtures live in lib/utils/lineage/__tests__/lineage_fixtures.ts
(test support only). 156 unit tests cover the modules and links,
including a 200-node seeded random fixture for overlaps and a
1,000-node layout.
Deviations from the spec:
- The architecture defines ChangeKind and CHANGE_KINDS in
lineage_graph.ts. The code defines them in lineage_changes.ts and
re-exports them from lineage_graph.ts, because lineage_graph imports
detect_changes and the other way round would make the two modules
import each other at runtime. Callers import them as specified.
- The architecture says that with nothing selected, an arrow key picks
layout.rows[0][0]. The code picks the oldest starting point and falls
back to rows[0][0], because the leftmost root can be a deleted
placeholder and the functional spec asks for the oldest starting
point.
- The architecture lists no clamp export from lineage_viewport. The
code exports clamp_viewport, the clamp every viewport function
already applies, because the canvas needs it to re-clamp after a
layout change.
Also marks phase 1 complete in the implementation plan and adds its
phase plan.

Phase 2 of the Experiment Lineage page: the page itself, at
/optimize/[project_id]/[task_id]/experiment_lineage. Nothing links to
it yet; the Optimize and Compare entry points are phase 3.
The route directory holds the page and five components:
- +page.svelte loads run configs, prompts, model info and tools, builds
the graph and layout with the phase 1 modules, and shows the stats
row, the filter chips, the graph and the detail panel. It mirrors the
selection to ?selected= with replaceState and restores it on load.
States: spinner, error block, an Intro for no run configs, and an
info Warning when no run config has lineage.
- lineage_canvas.svelte draws the graph as one SVG: four joined edge
paths, one clipped glyph per node, the selection ring and the
highlighted lineage. Toolbar zoom buttons, drag and wheel to pan,
Ctrl/Cmd+wheel and Safari pinch to zoom at the cursor, double-click
to fit, a 100ms hover tooltip, and arrow-key selection with Esc,
+, - and 0. Pan and zoom change one transform, so nodes don't
re-render.
- lineage_filter_chips.svelte, lineage_panel.svelte (header with parent
links, Changed from Parent rows, Notes, the run config's PropertyList,
Compare and Compare to Parent), lineage_glyph.svelte and
lineage_swatch.svelte.
- panel_close_key.ts decides when an Escape anywhere on the page closes
the panel.
The phase 1 modules gain three pure helpers: edge_path_groups in
lineage_layout.ts, and lineage_line_parts and origin_text in
lineage_display.ts. GLYPH gains a corner radius.
Tests: 51 route tests (canvas 24, panel 14, chips 5 through a test-only
harness for the two-way binding, panel_close_key 8) and 11 new unit
tests for the helpers.
Checked in Chromium with vite dev and the API mocked in Playwright,
because the backend can't start in this sandbox without tkinter. With
180 seeded run configs: every state, the stacked layout below lg, the
keyboard, Esc, and the assistant sidebar opening and closing, with no
page scroll at 1440x1000 and 1920x1080. With 1,000 run configs in
headless software-rendered Chromium: pan and drag hold 60 fps (p95
about 17ms), zoom p95 27ms with no frame over 33ms. The clip paths
stay.
No shared controls changed. checks.sh passes apart from the OpenAPI
schema check and 5 desktop test modules, which fail to import tkinter
in this sandbox.
Deviations from the spec:
- The architecture said the canvas clips each glyph with an
objectBoundingBox clip path. The code uses a user-space 14px clip
with a 2px radius, and the outlined glyphs round their own corners,
because those glyphs are inset by half a pixel and a box clip cut off
the outer half of their border.
- The architecture gave GLYPH a size and a gap. The code adds a radius
and a GlyphSize type, because the outlined glyph, the canvas clip and
the swatch all need it.
- The architecture said the body height subtracts 64px and is
recomputed on mount, after load and on window resize. The code
subtracts 97px and re-measures on window resize and when a
ResizeObserver on the body's container fires (one frame later),
because 64 left out the app layout's pb-8 and 1px border, which made
the page scroll, and the chips rewrap when the assistant sidebar
toggles without any window resize. architecture.md is updated.
- The functional spec said the view keeps its center when the panel
opens or closes. The code then also pans a selected node back into
view, because a node selected near an edge, or by the first arrow
key, slid off screen. This was a review decision; functional_spec.md
and architecture.md are updated.
- The architecture handled Escape only in the canvas. The code also
handles it on the window, skipping keys already handled, keys typed
into a field and keys while a dialog is open, because Esc did nothing
once focus moved into the panel. architecture.md is updated, and its
file inventory lists panel_close_key.ts and the chips test harness.
- The spec doesn't mention modifier keys. The canvas ignores keys held
with Ctrl, Cmd or Alt, so the browser's own zoom shortcuts still work.
- The architecture doesn't mention a hit target. Each node has one
transparent rect on top, because the tooltip flickered as the pointer
crossed the gaps between segments.
- The canvas keeps role="application" and silences Svelte's two a11y
warnings for it, because Svelte counts that role as static.
- An unknown ?selected= id is ignored and the graph fits, as specified,
but the value stays in the URL.
Also marks phase 2 complete in the implementation plan and adds its
phase plan.

The lineage page had no way in. This adds the three entry points from
the functional spec, all built with experiment_lineage_link:
- Optimize page, Run Configurations header: an "Experiment Lineage"
btn-mid before "Compare", hidden in select mode with the other
header buttons.
- Optimize page, each run config row's menu: "Show in Experiment
Lineage" after "Set as Task Default". It opens the page with
?selected=<run config id>.
- Compare page: an AppPage action button, "Experiment Lineage", that
opens the page with no selection.
Header layout: with three buttons, the Run Configurations header ran
past the card between about 640 and 1180px wide, and at 1024px with
the Assistant pane open. The button group now wraps, right-aligned
from sm up, and no longer has flex-shrink-0. The title is
`grow sm:basis-0 min-w-44`: the zero basis lets the buttons keep their
full width first, so the row at 1440px is unchanged, and the minimum
keeps "Run Configurations" on one line. In select mode with configs
selected, at 1024px with the Assistant pane, the primary Compare drops
to a second line, where before the title squeezed to 138px.
Tests: page tests for the Optimize page (button order, hidden in select
mode and back after Cancel Selection, row menu order, and the row item
navigating once with the selection) and for the Compare page (the
header button opens the page with no selection while the page's loads
stay pending). Both swap CreateNewRunConfigDialog for a new stub in
lib/ui/run_config_component/__tests__/, because the real dialog's run
config picker makes network calls in jsdom.
Deviations from the spec and phase plan:
- The spec didn't set a row menu width. The menu is w-64, not w-56,
because at w-56 "Show in Experiment Lineage" wrapped to two lines.
- Review asked for the row item to be an href item so it could open
in a new tab. It stays an onclick item that calls goto, as the
architecture says, because an href item reloads the whole app:
FloatingMenu stops the link's click from bubbling, so SvelteKit's
router on document.documentElement never sees it. A comment at the
item records this. Fixing it would mean changing FloatingMenu, a
shared control, which is a separate change.
- The phase plan put the dialog stub under the Optimize route's
__tests__/. It lives in lib/ui/run_config_component/__tests__/
instead, beside that component's other stubs, because both page
tests use it.
Checked in Chromium against a mocked API at 500, 640, 1024 (with the
Assistant pane), 1100 and 1440px, in normal and select mode.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01HdZSuwV2R5AX6iPNbqbbhy
- .agents/frontend_design_guide.md: under Color Palette, chart series
and category colors come from CHART_PALETTE in
lib/utils/chart_palette.ts. Pass it as an echarts chart's color
option, map other data colors to its entries, and don't hard-code
hex for a chart's series or categories.
- specs/projects/experiments_page/architecture.md:
- ChangeKind and CHANGE_KINDS are defined in lineage_changes.ts and
re-exported from lineage_graph.ts.
- With nothing selected, an arrow key picks the oldest starting
point and falls back to layout.rows[0][0].
- The file inventory lists the entry point page tests and the
create run config dialog stub.
- Entry Points covers the wrapping header, the w-64 row menu, and
why the row item is an onclick item, not an href item.
- The testing strategy covers the entry point tests.
- specs/projects/experiments_page/ui_design.md:
- The panel's actions row is `grid grid-cols-2 gap-2`.
- Entry Point Placement covers how the Optimize header buttons wrap
at narrower widths.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01HdZSuwV2R5AX6iPNbqbbhy
Extra-parent edges on the Experiment Lineage page were dashed elbows. They
dropped straight down through every row between the parent and the child,
then ran across in the same gap as the solid primary edges, so their
right-angle crossings read as branch points.
- Extra-parent edges are now smooth S-curves with vertical ends, from the
parent's bottom center to the child's top center, with no dashes.
Primary edges stay as elbows.
- At rest the curves are lighter and thinner than primary edges
(base-300 at 60% opacity, 0.75px). A small base-300 dot rests on the
child's top edge where each curve ends.
- Hovering a node draws its edges to its parents and children dark and
1.5px, with dark end dots. The hover state is the tooltip's, so both show
and hide together. Selection still darkens every edge on any path from a
root to the selected node, curves and dots included.
- lineage_layout.ts gives each layout edge its path and dot and lists each
node's edges in node_edges. join_edge_paths joins a set of edges into
primary, extra and dot paths, and edge_path_groups splits them into
resting and highlighted.
- The canvas draws the hovered node's edges as an overlay of two paths.
A hover joins only that node's few edges and never re-runs the node
{#each} block, which Svelte's compiled output confirms. At 1,000 nodes in
Chromium a hover paints in 5 to 15 ms, and pan and zoom timing matches
the code before this change.
- functional_spec.md (Edges, Hover), ui_design.md (colors, edge shapes) and
architecture.md (layout, canvas paths, tests) are updated to match.
Deviation: the approved feedback said a smooth S-curve with vertical
tangents at both ends. The code uses that shape with its handles capped at
one row height (28px) instead of the usual half of the vertical distance,
because uncapped handles on a long curve ran straight through the node
directly above the child (often its primary parent), so the curve looked
like it ended there. Curves spanning one or two rows are unchanged by the
cap.
Known limit: an extra parent one row above its child but far to the side
leaves no height for an S shape, so that curve is a faint, nearly flat line
along the gap between rows until it is hovered or selected.

…wrap
Two rounds of UI review feedback on the Experiment Lineage page.
Extra-parent curves:
- Remove the dot where each extra-parent curve met its child, at rest,
on hover and in the selected lineage (layout data, joined paths,
canvas paths, tests, specs).
- Add a canvas test that hovering changes no node's markup, and one that
changing the filters does.
- Reword why the curve's handles are capped at one row: the cap bends a
long curve's ends away from nearby nodes, not past them.
Lineage page:
- Drop the chips' info tooltip. Restyle the chips as legend items: no
outline or shadow at rest, light grey on hover, grey fill with a grey
outline when on. Never black.
- Subtitle: "Every run configuration for this task, and how they evolved."
- Double-click zooms in one step about the cursor (zoom_step takes an
optional point). Fit stays on its button and the 0 key.
- A single click on empty space deselects after 250ms; the next press or
a double-click cancels it, and a drag never deselects.
- A selection made outside the graph (the panel's Lineage dialog) is
panned into view with ensure_visible.
Side panel:
- Name wraps to two lines, then an ellipsis.
- Lineage line is a count ("Derived from 2 parents · 1 child") that opens
a Lineage dialog listing parents (recorded order) and children (oldest
first); choosing one selects it and pans to it. Deleted parents are
grey and can't be chosen.
- "Agent Created" / "Human Created" badge under the lineage line, hidden
when no origin is recorded.
- Section order Notes, Changed from Parent, Run Configuration, titled in
the spec and Run page sidebar style (text-xl font-bold, no rule) via a
local lineage_panel_section.svelte.
- Changed from Parent is a PropertyList with its custom_value slot: the
new value with a "was" line, each truncated and linked where a page
exists. Tools and skills read "N added, N removed" and open a Tools
Changed / Skills Changed dialog.
- Drop "Compare to Parent". Compare is now the link "Compare eval results
to others" under the Run Configuration title.
- Closing the panel moves focus to the graph when focus was in it;
closing a dialog returns focus to its opener.
Optimize page: the Run Configurations header buttons move onto their own
line under the title when they don't fit beside it (flex-wrap, title
basis-80). At 1440px with the Assistant pane open they stay on one line.
functional_spec.md, ui_design.md and architecture.md updated to match.
Deviations and interpretations: the feedback said "Derived from N"; the
code reads "Derived from 1 parent" / "Derived from 2 parents". Double-click
zooms on a node as well as on empty space. The change rows dropped their
color swatches and provider logo, because the spec now asks for the
property list itself, which has no slot for either. Generator prompts are
not linked, since they have no page.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01HdZSuwV2R5AX6iPNbqbbhy
A second round of UI review fixes on the Experiment Lineage page and
the Optimize page, plus one reviewer finding.
Lineage page:
- When no run config has lineage (the graph has no edges), the page body
is the house Intro, "No Experiment Lineage", instead of the graph with
an info Warning above it. One reactive empty_state now drives both
empty states.
- The stats row adds tools and skills after run configurations and
models, each only when above zero. summarize_lineage counts distinct
tool ids and skill ids across kiln_agent run configs.
- A key pressed right after a click on empty space no longer has its
selection cleared by the delayed deselect: on_keydown cancels the
pending deselect first.
Side panel:
- Selecting a different run config scrolls the panel to the top.
- Less space between the header and the first section (16px; sections
stay 32px apart).
- "Compare eval results to others" becomes "Compare to others".
- The Lineage dialog drops its bottom Close button; it closes from its X.
- The Tools Changed / Skills Changed dialogs show Added and Removed as
numbered tables in the house table frame, with the subtitle "Compared
with the first parent run configuration."
Optimize page: the Run Configurations header loses its Experiment
Lineage button; its subtitle ends with a "See experiment history." link
to the lineage page. The page test is updated.
functional_spec.md, ui_design.md and architecture.md updated to match.
Deviations and interpretations:
- The empty state's second line reads "No run config in this task has a
parent." where the feedback gave "These run configs were created
without it."
- The feedback asked to restore the header layout from before this
project if it fit with two buttons. It doesn't overflow, but at 1024px
with the Assistant pane open it squeezes the title to about 200px (a
four-line subtitle), and to about 135px in select mode (the title on
two lines, a seven-line subtitle). The wrapping layout stays.
- The panel scroll reset and the empty state are checked in Chromium
only; the lineage page has no component test harness.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01HdZSuwV2R5AX6iPNbqbbhy
UI review: there was too much space below the graph and the detail
panel. At lg and up the body now reaches 32px into AppPage's bottom
margin (lg:-mb-8), so the gap under the graph and the panel is 48px,
the same as the page card's side gutters. SPACE_BELOW_BODY_PX drops
from 97 to 65 to match, so the page still does not scroll.

feat: add the Experiment Lineage page for run configs
Oct 31, 2026
Agents can't upload images to GitHub the way drag and drop does, and an
assets branch puts a never-merge branch in the repo. The skill now keeps
screenshots off GitHub and has the agent send them to the user in chat
after the PR opens.

- Arrow keys reach the "No recorded parent" grid. Down from a run config
with no children selects the nearest node in the grid's first row. In
the grid, Up and Down select the nearest node (by x, leftmost on a tie)
in the row above or below, so Up from the grid's first row returns to
the tree's bottom row.
- The page tracks loads with an increasing id, so after leaving a task
and coming back, an older load of the same task can no longer clear
loading or leave a stale error. A page test covers it.
- Shorten the resize-observer comment to three lines.
- open-pr skill: say the agent must not upload screenshots to GitHub,
instead of saying no screenshot may be on GitHub.
- Update the functional spec and architecture docs for the new keys and
the load guard.

Serialize forced run-config refreshes for each task.
After two forced A loads wait for the first A request, the current loader lets both start new requests. Their responses can differ when run configurations change during the sequence. An older response can then finish last and overwrite the shared A entry that the lineage graph reads. The latest_load_id guard does not cover this store write.

SteveAgentic PR Summary
TLDR: Users cannot see how the run configs of a task relate to each other, so this PR adds an Experiment Lineage page. The page draws every run config and links it to the run configs it came from. Targets
main. There are no companion PRs.Before this PR, each run config records its parents in
provenance.derived_from_ids, but no screen shows them. A user cannot see how many experiments they tried, or how the agent changed over time. After this PR, a new page at/optimize/[project_id]/[task_id]/experiment_lineageshows the run configs as a tree:Implementation
lib/utils/chart_palette.tsnames the echarts default colors asCHART_PALETTE. The two Compare charts now set it explicitly, so their colors stay the same. The lineage page takes its change colors from the same list, so the app keeps one chart palette.lib/utils/lineage/holds pure TypeScript modules, each with unit tests. They build the graph, detect each kind of change, split the squares, lay out the tree, calculate zoom and pan, move the selection with the keyboard, and make the display text.open-prskill now tells agents to send screenshots to the user in chat. Before, it told agents to host screenshots on a separate branch.flowchart LR A[Run configs of the task] --> B[build_lineage_graph] C[detect_changes] --> B B --> D[layout_lineage] B --> E[summarize_lineage] D --> F[Graph canvas] B --> G[Side panel] E --> H[Stats row and filter chips]Before you merge
compare_chart.svelteandcompare_radar_chart.svelte. Each now passescolor: [...CHART_PALETTE]. The colors are the same as the echarts default colors that they used before.specs/projects/experiments_page/. The spec includes design reference files: an HTML mock, a JavaScript layout prototype, and two images..tsfiles anywhere in the repo. This was true before this PR. The agents linted the new.tsfiles with a temporary config, and they passed.Checks: Web lint, format, type check, the full web test suite (3,714 tests) and the web build passed on the last full web run. The small fixes after that run passed their targeted tests and the format check.
checks.shin the agent sandbox fails the OpenAPI schema check and 5 desktop Python test files, because the sandbox Python has notkinter. This PR changes no Python file. CI runs the full set.Review work:
/spec implement allran. A separate code review agent reviewed each phase and each round of UI feedback, and the coding agent fixed the findings. Some small fixes went in without a code review: dictated text, comment and doc wording, and the last spacing fix. Agents drove the page in Chromium against a mocked API, because the backend cannot start in the agent sandbox.Docs and skills updated:
.agents/frontend_design_guide.md: chart colors come fromCHART_PALETTE..agents/skills/open-pr/SKILL.md: agents send screenshots to the user in chat, and keep them off GitHub. Thedocs-syncskill found no other doc that this change makes incorrect.Generated by Claude Code
