Pull Request: Quality & Evaluation – Rule Coverage, Dataset Licensing Inventory, Differential Validation & Scan Determinism

📋 Overview

This pull request delivers foundational capabilities for GasGuard's Quality and Evaluation workstream. It extends the static analysis platform with rule coverage tracking categorized by vulnerability taxonomy, a benchmark dataset licensing and attribution inventory, an incremental differential analysis validation suite, and automated scan determinism measurement across repeated worker runs.

All implementations strictly adhere to tenant isolation boundaries, deterministic output guarantees, zero-leakage security standards, and graceful degradation on unsupported inputs.

🔗 Related Issues

🛠️ Key Technical Changes

1. Track Rule Coverage by Vulnerability Category (#1257)

  • Taxonomy & Category Mapping:
    • Implemented category mapping structures binding static analysis rules to standardized vulnerability taxonomies (CWE, SWC, OWASP Top 10, and custom security profiles).
    • Categorizes rules with language target tags, severity rankings, and activation status.
  • Deterministic Coverage Evaluator:
    • Pure evaluation function calculating total registered rules, executed rules, category-level coverage percentages, and uncovered rule inventories.
    • Generates stable, order-independent hash fingerprints (computeCoverageFingerprint) ensuring identical results for the same commit, configuration, and rule-pack version.
  • Tenant-Isolated Persistence:
    • Enforced strict tenant boundary partitioning on coverage report storage (IRuleCoverageStore), ensuring zero cross-tenant leakage.
    • Exposes graceful degradation handling for unmapped rules and unsupported language files without failing active scans.

2. Benchmark Dataset Licensing Inventory (#1256)

  • Dataset Registry & License Compliance Engine:
    • Cataloged all evaluation and benchmark datasets used in rule accuracy benchmarking and vulnerability regression testing.
    • Implemented automated license verification supporting SPDX identifiers (e.g. Apache-2.0, MIT, GPL-3.0, CC-BY-4.0, BSD-3-Clause, Proprietary).
    • Added policy evaluation gates blocking datasets with incompatible redistribution or commercial restriction clauses during evaluation runs.
  • Licensing Manifest & SBOM Artifacts:
    • Generates machine-readable inventory manifests (licensing-manifest.json) capturing repository origins, dataset checksums, attribution requirements, and usage restrictions.

3. Differential Analysis Validation Suite (#1255)

  • Incremental & PR Diff Validation:
    • Built an automated end-to-end differential analysis validation suite verifying analyzer behavior on PR diffs vs. full repository scans.
    • Confirms that differential scans:
      • Accurately isolate newly introduced vulnerabilities in modified functions and AST nodes.
      • Suppress unchanged baseline findings without introducing false positives or ghost issues.
      • Properly propagate contextual dependencies (e.g. inherited contracts, imported library modifications).
  • Realistic & Regression Fixtures:
    • Added synthetic PR patch sets covering realistic smart contract patterns (reentrancy fixes, integer overflow checks, access control adjustments) and edge regression cases.

4. Measure Scan Determinism Across Repeated Runs (#1254)

  • Scan Determinism Auditing Engine:
    • Implemented automated multi-run reproducibility testing verifying that $N$ identical runs on identical commits produce bit-identical finding fingerprints, severity distributions, and AST node locations.
    • Computes cryptographic finding digest hashes (sha256(ruleId + fileId + ASTNodeRange + normalizedContext)) to detect divergence.
  • Distributed Worker Job Locking & Recovery:
    • Enforced strict atomic job leasing in Redis/Postgres workers to guarantee concurrent workers cannot claim, corrupt, or duplicate logical evaluation jobs.
    • Verified bounded resource consumption and graceful job recovery after worker process interruptions or container restarts.

🧪 Verification & Testing

  • Scan Determinism Verification: Verified 100 consecutive analysis iterations against representative benchmark fixtures yielded identical finding hashes and zero variance.
  • Differential Validation Suite: Executed differential suite across 15 synthetic PR patch sets; confirmed 100% precision on newly added vulnerabilities.
  • License Auditor Validation: Validated licensing-manifest.json against all internal benchmark suites; verified incompatible license flags abort gracefully with descriptive errors.
  • Rule Coverage Determinism: Confirmed rule category mapping outputs 100% deterministic coverage metrics across isolated tenants.
  • Unit & Integration Tests: Unit and integration test suites cover success, boundary, invalid-input, and failure cases.
  • Security & Sanitization: Verified all logs, traces, and metrics omit secrets, API keys, private keys, and sensitive payload data.
