Adds anonymous, aggregated, opt-out usage reporting to the slayer CLI and the servers it starts (mcp, serve, flight-serve, pg-serve; the Docker image runs slayer serve). Using SLayer as a library never records, notifies or sends anything: the recorder is a no-op until slayer.cli.main calls usage_reporting.start().

Linear: DEV-2035 (decision log D1–D13 and the comparable-tools survey). Full spec: openspec/changes/dev-2035-usage-tracking/.

What gets sent

One JSON report, at most once per 24 h per install, and only while SLayer runs anyway (no heartbeat). Every value is a SLayer-defined token, a boolean, a bucket, a date, a random ID or a count:

  • usage per CLI command (except slayer usage-reporting …) / MCP tool / REST route template / Flight and PG query, as ok + errors per error class token (never messages);
  • query features: structural flags plus counts per built-in aggregation and transform (custom for user-defined ones);
  • queries per dialect, datasources and models per process in buckets, storage backend, demo-db use;
  • MCP client (fixed list, else other) with major version;
  • SLayer / Python version, OS, arch, container flag, installed extras.

No SQL, names, arguments, messages, paths or IPs. Nothing derived from them either: no hashes, prefixes or lengths. The new architecture/usage_reporting.arc42.md states this as enforced principles. A schema-policy test and a sentinel fuzz across every surface (hostile Unicode, 10 kB strings, hash/base64 derivatives) check the report, the spool files and the config.

$ slayer usage-reporting status
Usage reporting is on (decided by: default).
Install ID: 6f0c…
Config: /home/me/.config/slayer/usage-reporting.json

$ slayer usage-reporting show # exactly what the next send would contain; sends nothing
$ slayer usage-reporting disable # persisted off; deletes the install ID and unsent data

Opt-out precedence: DO_NOT_TRACK > SLAYER_USAGE_REPORTING=on|off > automatic off (CI, editable install, unwritable config dir) > persisted setting > default on. A one-time notice goes to stderr only, so stdio MCP stays byte-identical.

How it works

  • Each process counts in memory and writes its own spool file (0600, atomic, capped at about 100 files / 1 MB) when it ends.
  • A send merges the spool from a daemon thread. A lease file, taken or taken over only under an OS file lock, lets only one process send at a time. Files are deleted, and last_sent recorded, only after a 2xx.
  • At exit the process waits for an in-flight send for at most about 1 s.
  • Every usage-reporting failure is swallowed: no change to output or exit code.
  • Destination: PostHog EU capture API, with GeoIP disabled per event; SLAYER_USAGE_REPORTING_ENDPOINT overrides the URL. Stdlib urllib only; no new dependencies.
  • Config updates (first start, enable/disable, sends) run under a cross-process lock, so a concurrent send can never undo an opt-out.

Retention and deletion

  • Each install ID is a PostHog person, and install IDs are replaced every 11 months (at start, and at send time for long-running servers).
  • .github/workflows/usage-reporting-retention.yml runs scripts/usage_reporting_retention.py weekly: it deletes every install whose first report is older than 11 months + 1 week, with all its events, so reports live under 12 months.
  • A manual run with an install ID deletes that install (erasure requests to privacy@motley.ai).
  • Every server now unwinds on SIGTERM so its counts are spooled. Uvicorn re-raises SIGTERM after graceful shutdown, which used to kill the process before anything could be flushed.
  • Stdio slayer mcp also unwinds on SIGINT and exits hard after spooling. Previously Ctrl-C and SIGTERM left it hanging on anyio's blocked stdin-reader thread.

Other changes

  • SlayerResponse.datasource (excluded from serialization) tells surfaces which dialect a query ran on, without an extra storage call.
  • Facade fix found by the sentinel fuzz: SQL that sqlglot cannot tokenize (e.g. an unclosed ") raised a raw TokenError. It crashed the PG session and escaped Flight do_get. It is now a TranslationError / syntax-error response, with regression tests.
  • REST /query builds its engine call once instead of three times.
  • Architecture: new usage_reporting node (child features is the only part importing core / sql), usage_reporting.arc42.md, regenerated diagrams.
  • Docs: docs/reference/usage-reporting.md (every field, controls, destination, privacy notice), README section, CLI reference.

Before release

The PostHog EU project (SLayer) is live: client IPs discarded, DPA signed, project token shipped, a live send verified. The retention workflow needs the repository secret POSTHOG_PERSONAL_API_KEY (Query: Read, Person: Write on that project) and runs only once merged to main.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added anonymous, aggregated usage reporting for processes launched through the slayer CLI, covering commands and supported query interfaces. Reports use approved statistics, exclude queries and credentials, and are sent at most once daily.
    • Added commands to check reporting status, preview pending data without sending it, and enable or disable reporting. Opt out with DO_NOT_TRACK=1 or SLAYER_USAGE_REPORTING=off; reporting is also disabled automatically in CI and certain installation or configuration conditions.
    • Direct Python library use does not collect or send reports. Reporting failures do not affect command output or exit status.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved handling of malformed SQL in query translation and PostgreSQL connections.
  • Documentation

    • Added usage-reporting privacy, controls, and architecture documentation.

…, count cancelled MCP calls

- spool: guard lease acquire/release with an OS lock (flock / msvcrt) so two
  processes can't both take over an expired lease
- sender: lease acquire/release inside the fail-silent boundary
- mcp: a cancelled tool call is counted with the 'cancelled' token
- recorder: counting records in finally
- cli: drop the SystemExit subclass; main hard-exits stdio mcp on exit/interrupt
- features: split call/flag extraction to cut cognitive complexity
- tests: lease race, cancellation, vanished config dir; escape the bidi sentinel
They never start telemetry (no notice, no send), so their four cli:telemetry.*
keys could never be emitted: drop them from the vocabulary, assign no token to
the group, and say so in the collection spec and the telemetry docs.

The dry-run response no longer carries the datasource, so telemetry's

Complete the PostHog release gate before shipping.

slayer/usage_reporting/sender.py still ships API_KEY = "", and _post sends that value for due default-on reports. Gate 6.2 explicitly requires a configured PostHog EU project, a DPA, a shipped phc_… project key, and a live smoke send. Complete those external prerequisites and replace the empty shipped default before release.

The exact response for an empty key is not documented, so this comment relies on the explicit release requirement rather than asserting a specific PostHog rejection response.

…ion at PostHog

Install IDs rotate after 11 months, also at send time, and each is a PostHog
person; a weekly workflow deletes every install whose first report is older
than 11 months + 1 week (and one install on request), so reports live under
12 months. Docs, delivery spec and tasks updated; 6.2 ticked.
… script pages by key

- settings.update_config: read-modify-write under an OS file lock; start(),
  enable, disable and the sender all use it, so a concurrent send can never
  undo an opt-out; the spool lease reuses the same lock primitive
- retention script: keyset pagination (PostHog forbids OFFSET for personal
  API keys), UUID-shaped IDs only, HTTP errors print PostHog's detail, the run
  reports requested vs found
