One query can now combine models (or query stages) that no join path connects. "On average, how many events per customer?" used to need two queries and a division done by the agent; it is now one query:

{"source_model": "customers",
 "measures": [{"formula": "count(events.id) / count(*)", "name": "events_per_customer"}]}

returns one row, 5 / 3, with an unrelated_dataset warning naming events.

Semantics

A dataset no join path reaches from the population meets it as the product P × D (new semantics Axiom 3.1), reached only by naming it as a query path's first hop — route search, short-form routing and population inference never take it. The product never multiplies the population's rows:

  • Aggregates over the unrelated dataset are computed over its own rows (a producer rooted there) and attached like any unattributable aggregate: repeated across dimensions with the existing broadcast warning by default, the same value with an associated warning under associate, refused under error. A spine dimension attributes through the dataset's own time axis. Transforms, nested aggregation, measure filters and order keys over them work as over any aggregate.
  • Every other row-level read (dimension, time dimension, computed-dimension operand, order key, partition_by key, raw rows) is a new typed UnrelatedDatasetError that names the remedy (max(e.ne) for a one-row stage).
  • Filters keep association semantics when one-sided: events.amount > 25 restricts the events every events aggregate counts and gates the population by an uncorrelated EXISTS; city = 'A' gates each events producer the same way. A condition mixing sides (events.amount > customers.id, city = 'A' or events.amount > 100) is refused, so no emitted subquery ever correlates across the product.
  • Stored definitions (Column.sql, Column.filter, model filters) naming a model no join path reaches are now rejected at save time with UnreachableDefinitionError — previously they saved and silently returned wrong values — and fail with the same error at query time when stored unvalidated.
  • recommend_root_model reports an attachment on an unrelated model with its product-hop path and unrelated: true (when column items exist), on every surface.

Implementation notes: the product hop is a typed discriminator on OrientedJoin (the spine's product and detached edges moved onto it too) and join rendering fails closed on it; the bundle builder loads the models a query's first hops (and its models' definitions) name; the checker rule judges dependency closures, so derived columns behave like structural ones.

Also in this PR

  • Division by zero is NULL on every backend (new queries/semantics requirement): every divisor the arithmetic composer emits is guarded with NULLIF(…, 0), except a non-zero literal. Previously SQLite gave NULL, DuckDB NaN/inf, and Postgres/Snowflake raised. 108 golden-SQL keys were re-blessed; the guard is their only change.
  • Fixed an invalid empty SELECT for a dimensionless query measuring only an expression of cross-model aggregates (count(events.id) * 2).
  • The empty-join_pairs validation message now names the aggregate remedy; the MCP measures description documents the behaviour.
  • Existing tests that pinned "no join path ⇒ error" now pin the new error or the new value.

Spec: openspec/specs/queries/unrelated-datasets/spec.md (change archived under openspec/changes/archive/2026-10-15-dev-2082-combine-models-and-stages-that-have-no-join-path-cross-join/).

Closes DEV-2082.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Queries can aggregate data from datasets with no join path to the population. Results preserve the population’s rows, and responses include an unrelated_dataset warning.
    • Root recommendations can include unrelated aggregate attachments and identify them as unrelated.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Division by zero now returns NULL across supported backends.
    • Row-level reads across unrelated datasets and filters combining unrelated datasets with other data now produce typed errors.

Covers the product hop, aggregates and row-level refusal across it, one-sided
filters, the unrelated_dataset warning, the no-explosion guarantees with an
emitted-SQL checker, root recommendation's unrelated flag on every surface, and
the MCP measures guidance. Spec: stored Column.sql and model filters naming an
unreachable model are refused (approved plan edit, task 3.6).
…es-that-have-no-join-path-cross-join

# Conflicts:
#	tests/test_mcp_surface_budget.py
…ne-sided filters across it

An unrelated dataset named as a query path's first hop meets the population as a
product hop; aggregates over it compile as producers over its own rows, every
other row-level read is a typed error, and an unrelated_dataset warning names it.
Stored definitions naming an unreachable model are refused; recommend_root_model
flags unrelated attachments. Also fixes an empty _base SELECT for a dimensionless
expression over cross-model aggregates alone.
…eferences

Row-level reads of a model no join path reaches now expect UnrelatedDatasetError;
an outer stage aggregating such a model reads its own rows with an
unrelated_dataset warning instead of failing.
Every division the arithmetic composer emits guards its divisor with
NULLIF(..., 0) unless it is a non-zero literal; golden SQL re-blessed (the only
change is the guard).

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds query-time product hops for unreachable datasets. Aggregates and one-sided filters can cross these hops, while invalid row-level reads raise typed errors. Warnings and root recommendations identify unrelated datasets. Generated divisions guard zero denominators.

…quoted forms

- The unrelated_dataset warning walks nested producers, so max(count(events.id), partition_by=[]) warns.
- Bundle discovery reads definition qualifiers with the reach check's own parser, so a quoted "events".amount is refused at query time.
- Split render_recommendation_markdown and ProductSides._walk below Sonar's complexity cap.

slayer/engine/bundle_builder.py:315-318
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Include definition heads from models discovered during stage-base closure.

_stage_base_components can add a stage base or first-hop target after _referenced_models scans definition_heads(component). If newly discovered model B has a stored definition such as C.foo, C is absent from the bundle. The query-time resolver then skips UnreachableDefinitionError for the missing target.

Collect definition heads after both additions:

…uery-backed model reports its own error

- Definition-named model discovery runs inside the query-backed split worklist, so a stage base's definitions are scanned like the root component's.
- Framing stamps unspliced query-backed placeholders as unrelated datasets, so the product hop to one is walked and its splice failure surfaces instead of "no route to target".

An aggregate over a model no join path reaches varies per bucket of a time_spine time dimension, attributed through that model's own axis; the MCP measures description, docs and tool-surface spec said it repeats on every row.
