SQLAlchemy 2.1 changed the driver a bare postgresql:// URL resolves to, from psycopg2 to psycopg 3. The [postgres] extra installs psycopg2 and asyncpg, so on a fresh pip install 'motley-slayer[postgres]' every Postgres query failed with a MissingDriverError whose hint pointed back at the extra that was already installed (#500). A bare mysql:// / mariadb:// was already broken on 2.0: SQLAlchemy resolves it to mysqldb, which [mysql] does not install.

What changes

A connection URL that names no driver now always uses SLayer's default driver for the datasource type, never SQLAlchemy's own per-version default:

connection_string (type) connects as
postgresql://u:p%40ss@h:5432/d?sslmode=require (postgres) postgresql+psycopg2://u:p%40ss@h:5432/d?sslmode=require
mysql://u@h/d (mysql) mysql+pymysql://u@h/d
mariadb://u@h/d (mariadb) mariadb+pymysql://u@h/d, async mariadb+aiomysql://u@h/d
clickhouse://u@h/d (clickhouse) clickhouse+http://u@h/d
mssql://u@h/d (sqlserver) mssql+pyodbc://u@h/d
postgresql+psycopg://u@h/d, mysql+mysqldb://u@h/d, … unchanged: a driver you name is respected
  • Each dialect declares its default driver once, as the +driver of its URL scheme. Postgres's scheme becomes postgresql+psycopg2, so structured-field Postgres datasources also name their driver.
  • The default driver is added in one place, DatasourceConfig.get_connection_string(), which feeds the sync engine, the async engine, the engine-cache keys and the missing-driver hint. A stored connection_string is never rewritten.
  • MySQL-family types accept both the mysql and mariadb backends, and the async path keeps the URL's own backend.
  • sqlalchemy is capped at <2.1: on 2.1, snowflake-sqlalchemy fails to import and duckdb-engine's foreign-key reflection breaks. DEV-2118 covers those fixes, lifting the cap and adding a latest-SQLAlchemy CI leg. The lock stays on 2.0.49.

The SQLAlchemy 2.1 Postgres default is simulated in the tests, so the guard runs on the locked 2.0.49. A version-independent check asserts that for every type with a default driver, SQLAlchemy resolves both the structured URL and a bare user URL to exactly that driver.

Spec: openspec/changes/archive/2026-10-20-dev-2116-a-connection-url-that-names-no-driver-always-uses-slayers/.

Fixes DEV-2116. Closes #500.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Driverless database connection URLs now automatically use SLayer’s supported default drivers while preserving URL details.
    • Asynchronous connections recognize supported backend aliases and select compatible drivers more reliably.
    • MariaDB URLs receive appropriate synchronous and asynchronous driver handling.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Explicit, foreign, invalid, and unsupported drivers remain unchanged.
    • Structured PostgreSQL connections now consistently use the psycopg2 driver.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance explaining driver selection for PostgreSQL and MySQL connection strings.

📝 Walkthrough

Datasource connection URLs now receive declared default drivers when they are parseable, driverless, and use a supported backend. Async driver selection recognizes backend aliases. SQLAlchemy is constrained to versions below 2.1.

Changes: SQL driver pinning

slayer/sql/dialects/base.py, slayer/sql/dialects/drivers.py, slayer/sql/dialects/mysql.py, slayer/sql/dialects/postgres.py, tests/test_dialect_driver_facts.py
DriverFacts derives the synchronous driver from the URL scheme and records backend aliases. Dialect declarations and tests cover PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB, ClickHouse, and SQL Server driver facts.

DatasourceConfig.get_connection_string() returns a URL with a default driver where applicable, without changing the stored connection string. Async selection checks supported backends and driver suffixes. SQLAlchemy is constrained to >=2.0,<2.1.

Add the SQL Server ODBC driver at the production default-driver boundary.

The bare input mssql://u@h/d must remain unchanged. When SQL Server default-driver resolution produces a hostname-based mssql+pyodbc URL without a driver query parameter, add the configured default ODBC driver there. Update the specification and test expected output to include that parameter.
