Closes DEV-2107.

What and why

From the laptop you can now view a remote host as if you were on it: its own hub, repos, worktrees and terminals, read from its own config.json. You configure nothing beyond the existing hosts entry.

The issue asked for a separate Chrome --app window per host. The planning interview settled on the current tab instead: the tab navigates to the remote hub and back. All openings go through the home page, so errors and the Tailscale login link always show in one place.

How it works

  1. A new remote command, wtd ui --print-code, makes a hub of that wtd's version serve on the host and prints one line, {"port":…,"code":"…"}, instead of opening a browser.
  2. On openHub, the home hub runs that command over the host's existing SSH control master. A Tailscale check's login link is relayed to the page while it waits.
  3. The home hub listens on 127.0.0.1:<host port> and relays each accepted connection to the remote hub with its own ssh -W. It checks the forward with GET /, then replies with http://127.0.0.1:<host port>/#code=…&host=…&home=…&hubs=…, and the tab navigates there.
  4. The host port is assigned once (above the highest port in use) and written into the host's entry in config.json. It never changes after that, so the host's page keeps its origin and its localStorage preferences.
  5. The hub's Host/Origin rule now accepts Host: 127.0.0.1:<any port> with Origin equal to http:// plus that Host, so a forwarded port reaches it. The token or code is still required, and DNS rebinding still fails because the Host is an IP literal. hub.arc42.md principle 3 is updated with the approved wording.

User-facing

  • A Hubs menu in the header lists "This machine" and every remote host. On a remote page, "This machine" goes back home; another host goes through home/#hub=<name>.
  • A status line shows Opening box…, box needs Tailscale login with an "Open login link" button, or box: <reason> with a ×. A host whose wtd is missing or too old offers Reinstall on box. It installs without restarting the daemon (a new installHub operation, queued with restarts and reinstalls), then opens the hub.
  • A remote page is titled worktree-term — <host>.
  • New commands:
wtd ui devbox # opens the UI and switches it to devbox's hub
    wtd ui --print-code # {"port":7417,"code":"…"}, no browser
  • config.json gains an optional per-host port:
    { "hosts": [{ "name": "devbox", "ssh": "devbox", "port": 7418 }] }
  • The host's sshd must allow forwarding: AllowTcpForwarding yes, which is OpenSSH's default.

Compatibility

BROWSER_PROTOCOL_VERSION goes from 9 to 10 for the new messages and the browser-only error codes hub-outdated and hub-failed. An open page reloads once. The daemon protocol and daemons are unaffected. The print-code line and the page fragments pass between wtd installations of any versions, so they are frozen in frozen.golden.json.

Testing

  • Unit, process (the fake SSH now supports -W) and e2e (test/e2e/hubs.spec.ts) tests. pnpm test, lint, tsc -b, la-arch-check, la-check-conventions and openspec validate --strict all pass.
  • The opt-in real-SSH tests in test/integration/ssh-localhost.test.ts were not run locally.

The full spec is in openspec/changes/dev-2107-worktree-term-open-a-remote-hosts-hub-in-its-own-window/.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Open a configured remote host’s hub from the Hubs menu or with wtd ui <host>, switching to it in the same browser tab.
    • View connection progress, follow Tailscale login links, retry outdated hub installations, and dismiss opening errors.
    • Use wtd ui --print-code to print a one-time connection code without opening a browser.
    • Configure stable ports for remote hubs; ports can be assigned automatically.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance for remote hubs, port configuration, connection codes, and troubleshooting.

…nt tab

Unit, process, e2e and opt-in real-SSH tests for opening a remote host's
hub through the home page: browser protocol 10 messages and hub error
codes, the frozen print-code line and page fragments, per-host port
assignment, the install-only coordinator queue, the print-code opener and
ssh -W forwards, the any-port Host/Origin rule, wtd ui <host> and
--print-code, tunnel listeners, the Hubs menu and status line. The fake
SSH learns -W forwarding; hub budgets are shortened in process tests via
WTD_HUB_OPEN_MS, WTD_HUB_PROBE_MS and WTD_HUB_INSTALL_MS.
The home hub opens a remote host's own hub on request: it runs
`wtd ui --print-code` there over the host's control master, binds the
host's stable loopback port (assigned once into config.json) and relays
each connection with `ssh -W`, probes it, and hands the page a URL to
navigate to. The page gains a Hubs menu and an opening status line with
the Tailscale login link, "Reinstall on <host>" and errors; a remote page
routes back through home. `wtd ui <host>` and `wtd ui --print-code` are
the CLI ends. The hub's Host/Origin rule accepts any loopback port with a
same-origin Origin. Browser protocol 10.

Also fixes tests the pr-tests stage left behind: the --version
expectations still named browser protocol 9, the oversized print-code
test raced the immediate kill, and a few toThrow assertions made more
than one throwing call.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds remote-host hub access through wtd ui <host> and the Hubs menu. It adds stable forwarded ports, SSH tunnels, hub-opening and installation operations, validated protocol messages and fragments, and browser status handling. The browser protocol version changes from 9 to 10.

Changes: Remote hub access

Layer / File(s) Summary
Protocol and address contracts
src/protocol/*, openspec/specs/protocol/spec.md
The browser protocol advances to version 10. New messages support hub opening, installation, login links, and opened URLs. New encoders and decoders validate print-code lines and home and remote page fragments.
Remote-host port configuration
src/hub/config/*, test/process/hub-cli.test.ts, test/e2e/fixture.ts
Remote hosts can have unique hub ports from 1024 through 65535. Missing ports are assigned and persisted. Configuration edits preserve existing values and recompute assignments after concurrent writes.
SSH forwarding and loopback listeners
src/hub/links/*, src/hub/server/*, src/platform/dialer/*, src/hub/main/index.ts, test/support/fake-ssh.ts, test/integration/ssh-localhost.test.ts
SSH commands start remote hubs and forward connections to their loopback ports. The hub manages tunnel listeners and active forwards. HTTP and WebSocket requests accept valid loopback Host ports and check Origin against the request Host.
Remote opening and installation orchestration
src/hub/router/*, src/hub/main/index.ts, test/process/hub-router-*
The router opens remote hubs through print-code retrieval, port assignment, tunnel setup, and probing. Sessions can cancel prior openings and install remote hubs. Install, restart, and reinstall operations are shared or queued.
CLI hub entry points
src/cli/*, src/hub/main/index.ts, test/process/hub-cli.test.ts
wtd ui accepts an optional host or --print-code. The CLI rejects invalid combinations, opens the selected hub, or prints the encoded port and one-time code.
Browser hub navigation and status
src/web/client/*, src/web/ui/*, src/web/main/*, test/e2e/hubs.spec.ts
The browser reads and retains remote-page details, tracks opening requests, and renders hub navigation and opening states. The menu supports switching hubs, login links, reinstall actions, and error dismissal.
Architecture, specifications, and user documentation
README.md, architecture/*, openspec/*
Documentation and specifications describe remote hub access, port assignment, SSH forwarding, protocol formats, CLI behavior, and browser navigation.

Remote hub access appears sound. The loopback Host and Origin checks still require a valid credential before a connection is accepted. Two small documentation inaccuracies remain: the architecture notes omit the code credential, and the protocol spec lists conflicting version numbers. Both are low risk and can be fixed alongside or shortly after merge.

Comment thread openspec/specs/protocol/spec.md
Main (DEV-2108) split the big process-test files and moved their shared
setup into test/support. This branch's test changes are re-homed there:

- hub-server.test.ts additions (forwarded Host and Origin checks) go into
  hub-server-http.test.ts and hub-server-websocket.test.ts
- the remote-hub opening, tunnel and install tests go into the new
  hub-router-opening.test.ts and hub-router-install-hub.test.ts
- the hub budgets (HUB_ENV), INSTALL_TIMEOUT, PRINT_CODE, restartHub,
connectRuns, LOGIN_URL, configFile and RemoteHostConfig.port move into
test/support/hub-router.ts, shared by the split files
- hub.arc42.md keeps this branch's Purpose sentence and principle 3 wording
with main's [enforced] pointers to the split test files
- install-local.test.ts keeps main's reinstall flake fix and this branch's
  browser protocol 10
