To support other models, you would need to create a set of new [template prompts](https://github.com/NVIDIA-NeMo/Guardrails/tree/develop/nemoguardrails/llm/prompts) that consider the specific capabilities and the API of the model and add them to your bot configuration.

For `engine: openai` with GPT-5 or GPT-6 model names, dedicated chat templates cover
user-intent detection, combined intent and bot-action generation, interaction
continuation, and value generation. These tasks use the `main` model unless you
configure a task-specific model. The default OpenAI-compatible framework requires
`OPENAI_API_KEY` and no optional integration extra. These templates do not change
the prompts for generating whole flows from names or natural-language descriptions.

Generated bot actions must use the `bot action:` format shown in the templates.
The parser accepts straight or paired curly double quotes as string delimiters,
preserves quotes inside the string, and stops before subsequent dialogue turns.

Limit the curly-quote claim to generated actions.

get_first_bot_action converts curly delimiters before parsing. The Colang grammar does not accept curly delimiters in a .co string. A reader who writes bot say “Hi” in a flow will get a parse error. State that generated LLM actions are normalized; require straight quotes in Colang source. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

An answer with no bot action raises an `LlmResponseError` instead of creating an
empty continuation flow. Custom prompts should request only the next turn;
provider-side stop sequences are not available on every model.

## Natural Language Description (NLD)

One of the main LLM generation mechanisms in Colang is the so-called Natural Language Description (NLD) in combination with the "generation" operator `...`.

For Colang 1, the GPT-5 and GPT-6 prompt families use chat messages for intent
classification, next-step generation, bot messages, single-call dialog generation,
and value generation. Intent prompts request structured output instead of a spoken
reply. Single-call generation requests two intent lines followed by the bot message;
the parser also accepts an optional leading quoted user-message echo in buffered
and streaming modes. Custom prompts can override these templates using `models`.

P2 Triple-quoted reply text changes

_normalize_action_quotes changes content inside valid triple-quoted strings. For example, bot say """She said "“hello”" today.""" becomes bot say """She said ""hello"" today.""". The interior straight quote closes the scanner’s string state, so it mistakes the curly quotes for delimiters and changes what the bot says.

Colang accepts triple-quoted action arguments. Track those delimiters too, and add a regression test that preserves their contents.

Normalize continuation action lines before indenting the generated flow.

GenerateFlowContinuationAction bypasses CreateFlowAction and passes its returned body directly to AddFlowsAction. If a later bot action: line contains leading spaces, textwrap.indent adds another indentation level. The parser then treats the ordinary action as nested Colang syntax and can reject the generated flow. Before this change, the assembler added the flow indentation only once, so the same input remained valid.

Normalize each extracted action line before calling textwrap.indent.

Preserve already-indented create_flow bodies.

If body is bot say "Hi"\n bot gesture "wave", the previous code puts both actions at flow-body indentation. textwrap.indent moves the second action below the first. An ordinary bot action cannot contain a nested suite, so the generated flow fails to parse. Normalize the existing body shape before indenting every line, or update callers under an explicit new body contract. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the flow-body formatting near the `body` assignment so `create_flow`
preserves existing relative indentation while indenting the body under the flow;
normalize the body’s existing indentation before applying the flow indentation
so sibling actions remain siblings and the generated flow parses correctly.
