docs(examples): replace retired OpenAI models with chat models - #2550
Shipped examples and copyable documentation still reference retired OpenAI models, causing a model-not-found 404 on the first request with a valid key.
For the v0.25.0 QA fix, replace retired GPT-3.5 model IDs with gpt-4o-mini and retired GPT-4 / GPT-4 Turbo IDs with gpt-4o. Update the matching README, notebook sources, docstrings and evaluation configs. Preserve sampling parameters and existing current-model examples.
This PR targets develop directly and has no dependency on the parser changes. #2514 retains the broader reasoning-model migration for a future release; the parser work in #2516 and #2517 remains separate.
Both replacement model families are scheduled to shut down on January 14, 2027, so this is an interim release fix. Source: OpenAI deprecations.
QA scope
This addresses the SDK content defect in NGR-1045. It does not complete NGR-1054: cases with their own model configs still require QA-repo changes. In particular, P0_examples_configs_streaming_threads needs its expected model changed from gpt-4 to gpt-4o, and model-swapping sed commands need review. QA must rerun the affected cases, including single-call dialog answer checks, before closing the issue.
NGR-1054 — separate QA-repo model/config/assertion updates; remains open.

Verification
Pre-commit on all 75 changed files: passed, including Ruff and ty.
Focused offline tests: 23 passed (tests/test_config_loading.py, tests/test_example_rails.py, tests/v2_x/test_tutorial_examples.py, tests/test_rails_llm_config.py), using make test WORKERS=1 with live-provider keys unset.
All 42 changed YAML files differ only in OpenAI model IDs; 41 SDK config directories loaded successfully. The remaining YAML file is an evaluation judge config.
Notebook outputs and metadata are unchanged; notebooks were not executed.
Pinned Fern check: 0 errors; 1 warning that authenticated redirect checking was skipped.
make docs-fern: SDK-reference generation blocked because the Docker daemon is unavailable.
Live verification attempted with both replacement models, but the available OpenAI credential returned HTTP 401. No live success or answer-quality claim is made.
Manual diff review against the develop merge base: no runtime/parser, dependency, authentication, or secret-handling changes.

Walkthrough
The pull request updates OpenAI model IDs in documentation, notebooks, shipped configurations, and code examples. It also revises one code comment to describe an output-format capability instead of naming a model. No runtime logic or public declarations change.

Summary
Documentation examples and instructions README.md, docs/configure-rails/*, docs/deployment/*, docs/evaluation/*, docs/integration/*, docs/run-rails/*
Examples and instructions use gpt-4o or gpt-4o-mini instead of older model IDs.
Shipped example configurations examples/bots/*, examples/configs/*, examples/eval/*, examples/notebooks/*, examples/scripts/*, examples/server_configs/*, examples/v2_x/*
OpenAI model IDs in configurations, notebooks, and scripts are updated. The streaming example’s model note also changes.
Evaluation and code examples nemoguardrails/eval/ui/README.md, nemoguardrails/evaluate/data/topical/*, nemoguardrails/rails/llm/config.py, nemoguardrails/tracing/spans.py
Evaluation examples and model descriptions use updated IDs. One multi-step generation comment now describes a required output-format capability instead of naming a model.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 38b4b
This change swaps retired OpenAI model IDs for current ones in examples and docs, and it is safe to merge. Two documentation follow-ups remain. The replacement models are scheduled for shutdown on January 14, 2027, so a later migration is needed. One Colang 2 docs page still lists models OpenAI has already shut down.

Remove retired models from the supported-model list.
OpenAI shut down gpt-3.5-turbo and gpt-4-turbo on October 23, 2026. Readers who select these listed models cannot make API calls. Remove them or mark them as retired. (developers.openai.com)
