Description

Move nest-asyncio to an optional extra and import it only when automatic patching is enabled. Emit a FutureWarning announcing deprecation in 0.26; ordinary synchronous APIs remain supported.

The chat-ui and all extras still install it through Chainlit.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Changes
    • The default installation no longer includes nest-asyncio; it’s available as an optional compatibility extra. The chat-ui and all extras include it.
    • Async APIs are recommended for notebooks and applications with a running event loop. Synchronous APIs remain supported outside one.
    • Automatic event-loop patching is opt-in and emits a deprecation warning. It is planned for deprecation in version 0.26, though the compatibility option will remain available then. To enable it, install the extra and set the environment variable before importing.

Walkthrough

The project removes nest-asyncio from core dependencies and adds it as an optional extra. Patching imports the package only when enabled and emits a deprecation warning. Documentation and tests describe the optional compatibility path and its setup.

Changes: Asyncio compatibility

Layer / File(s) Summary
Optional dependency and patching behavior
pyproject.toml, nemoguardrails/patch_asyncio.py, tests/test_nest_asyncio.py
nest-asyncio is now optional. The patching module imports it only when patching is enabled, raises an installation-guidance ImportError if it is unavailable, and emits a FutureWarning. Tests cover disabled patching, missing dependencies, warnings, and API behavior.
Installation and usage guidance
CONTRIBUTING.md, docs/getting-started/installation-guide.mdx, docs/troubleshooting.mdx

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 2 files. Full details: Test Results For Major Changes

Explanation

PASS. The PR changes dependency installation and asyncio patch behavior, so it is more than a documentation-only change. The description includes testing information: it states that tests were added and that verification and unavailable checks were noted. The diff adds 140 lines of focused tests for missing dependencies, opt-in patching, warnings, and synchronous/asynchronous APIs. Numeric, convergence, and performance evidence is not applicable.

List chat-ui in the extras table.

The table is described as comprehensive, but it omits chat-ui even though this paragraph references that extra. Add a chat-ui row or remove the claim that the table is comprehensive.

Looks good! Just a few high-level items outside of line comments:

  1. Not blocking for this PR. We need to update the notebooks to either %pip install 'nemoguardrails[nest-asyncio] at the start, or change the synchronous method calls with async ones. Otherwise on a new install thenotebooks won't work

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Add the cel extra to this list.

The project declares cel as a valid optional extra, but this sentence lists all valid extras without it. Keep this guidance synchronized with pyproject.toml so contributors do not miss a supported installation option. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

environments installing only that group can run the opt-in subprocess tests with
the real package; do not rely on the broader dev group.
