Dashboard: Hide Calendar and Overdue Items without tag #727
I have several different clients/companies I work with and I have to switch between them during timeblocks in the day.
I would be really helpful for me to be able to context switch and not see today, overdue and other calendar notes except ones with the tag of the company I'm working on.
The folder inclusion is helpful for the project notes, but a lot of my notes are entered on calendar notes on a particular day, or I put them in calendar notes and >date them and want to see only those company items in the section for today or tomorrow or whatever.
Exclusion of items using a tag is too hard to do because new contexts come up all the time and some todos have no hashtag.
When I'm focused on one domain, I don't want to see all the calendar todos and overdues from every domain, including my personal/home items.
If I had this, I would use folders and note-tags for project notes. And for calendar notes, I could train myself to always attach tags if I knew it would help focus this view.
For me, the ideal:
If I am in perspective ACME and the "only show items tagged" (new) field is set to "#acme", then:
a) In the today section I would only see items with the #acme tag [same with tomorrow, yesterday, etc]
b) Overdues would only show me #acme tagged items
c) The other sections would show as normal, if they match the inclusion/exclusion criteria
I could be happy with this for starters. But...to be a little greedy, when I first wrote the deduping code for tags, I wrote that if something is in a tagged section, the task is listed there and everything else falls beneath that in the order for deduping. I think you later made it so that this order could be variable (thank you) so I would then suggest:
d) If you have this feature set, and an item is in a calendar note, but matches the tag, it first shows up in a calendar section, not the tag section.
What I mean is, if I have a note with this todo:
something #acme >todaysDate
In today's world, if I have a tagged section for #acme (with dupes off), then this will not show up in the today section, it will only show in the hashtag section.
I would prefer to see it in the Today section (not the #acme tag section) so i know I have to do this TODAY
And then tomorrow, it would be in the OVERDUE section
When I couldn't sleep last night, I worked on what you'd said in our call -- I hadn't yet seen this.
What I implemented was slightly different: the ability to select which Calendar note Sections to use, based on comma-separated set of headings. Commit 120763b.
I see that you've since worked on it further, thank you, in PR #730.
In the future, I was thinking that maybe I would add tag-checking to the filter as well (e.g. if you have a task you want to show in multiple of these perspectives, you could tag the task #medawar #jgc etc. and it would show up if the search term were medawar or jgc no matter what heading it was in. Thoughts?
I'm not against this in principle. But to be honest this feels like it would be too complicated. It's already hard enough for me to diagnose why something is/isn't showing up when I expect it to, and I wrote the code. I think having multiple settings that take tags, and that apply them in different ways, is going to make that worse.
We can now include/exclude by Teamspace, by folder, and by calendar note section. We can also exclude by phrase (including Tags). We can define multiple tag sections. We can apply a tag to every item in a note with one line. That's really a lot of flexibility already.
The one thing I do still hit is stuff for >today but in practice not relevant until a particular meeting starts. But I'm choosing to live with that for now.
But back to your use case above. The section headings are checked as substring not exact matches. So if you want to be able to see some calendar note items in 2 perspectives, then you could put both names in the heading. Does that help the use case?
@jgclark Maybe that workaround will work for now. Thanks. I will give it a shot. It's just that often I am adding items from my phone using Shortcuts and don't have easy access to edit the header it's going under.
FWIW here is the description of the setting in the branch above:
Comma-separated list of calendar section headings to include when selecting open tasks/checklists to show. Tasks are included if: (1) they are under a heading containing the term (applies to all headings in the H4->H2 hierarchy for each line), or (2) the task content itself contains the term (e.g., #ACME, @acme, or just 'ACME'). Matches are partial and case-insensitive, so 'ACME' will match 'ACME Tasks', '#ACME', or 'The ACME Section'. If left blank, all items are included.
I'm doing some tidy up.
Part of this -- the heading filter has been shipped. But the part about hashtags is still outstanding. I can't easily merge your PR #730 given the number of mods since, but I'm leaving both open until I can address them.

I asked Cursor to make the change to allow for hashtags/text search (not just headings). Pushed it up as a branch in case you want to add it in the future: https://github.com/NotePlan/plugins/tree/dashboard-calendar-hashtag-filter
