fix(evaluation): Prevent summary truncation - #1189
Conversation
`generate_run_ai_summary` requested Anthropic structured output for what
is a single prose field. Under constrained decoding a bare `"` inside the
string value of `{"summary": "..."}` is a legal string terminator, so when
the summary reached a quoted phrase and the sampler emitted the raw quote
instead of `\"`, the object closed early. The result was valid JSON with an
amputated sentence, `stop_reason == "end_turn"`, and nothing to log — 11 of
74 stored summaries were affected.
Drop the schema: a one-field JSON wrapper bought nothing and also hid two
other defects, since `next(b.text ...)` discarded every text block after the
first and any parse failure degraded the whole summary to `None`. Text blocks
are now joined and a non-`end_turn` stop is logged as a truncation warning.
`_call_prompt_drafting_llm` keeps its schema — two fields plus a `maxLength`
cap on the rationale earn it — but now raises `prompt_generation_failed` on a
non-`end_turn` stop, so a `max_tokens`-truncated draft fails the job instead
of being persisted as a live system prompt.

📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe change removes schema-constrained output for evaluation summaries and concatenates raw text blocks. It logs incomplete summary responses. Address PR review: the "end_turn" stop-reason literal was defined twice (summary.py, prompt_improvement.py) and repeated across four test modules. Hoist it to services/llm/providers/claude.py, already the shared home for one-shot Anthropic call-site helpers. Also drop the "what" comments the review flagged in summary.py. Summary
Eval-v2 run summaries (
EvaluationRun.score.overall.ai_summary) were being stored truncated mid-sentence — 11 of 74 rows in a localai_platformDB:Root cause
generate_run_ai_summaryrequested Anthropic structured output for what is a single prose field:Structured outputs work by constrained decoding. Inside the string value of
{"summary": "..."}, a bare"is a grammatically legal token — it is the string terminator. When the summary reached a quoted phrase (omit the required "wellness message",nationality ("Swedish")) and the sampler emitted the raw"instead of\+", the grammar read it as end-of-string. The object closed, generation finished normally,json.loadssucceeded.Every layer reported success: valid JSON,
stop_reason == "end_turn", and a non-fatalexcept Exceptionwith nothing to log.Ruled out first
max_tokens— cap is 3000; truncated rows measured 354-842 chars (~90-220 output tokens), while complete summaries in the same table reach 2000+.scoreis JSONB, containing columns areText; no constraint insave_score.SELECT length(...)in psql rather than reading a DB-client grid cell.Evidence for the mechanism:
"Quotes are near-absent from truncated summaries, because the first quote is what ended generation. Cut points land exactly where a quote would open. Per-quote coin flip: ~11 rows got lucky with
\", ~11 did not.Changes
crud/evaluations/summary.py— schema deleted. A one-field JSON wrapper bought nothing and caused the bug. Removing it closed three problems at once:next(b.text for b in ...)took only the first text blockNonePlus a
stop_reason != "end_turn"warning — partial text is still returned (a short summary still reads usefully), it is just no longer silent.services/evaluations/prompt_improvement.py— schema kept; two fields plusmaxLength: 200onrationaleearn it. Butimproved_instructionsis persisted as a newconfig_version, so a truncated draft becomes a live system prompt. Added astop_reasonguard that raisesprompt_generation_failed, withexcept RuntimeError: raiseabove the generic handler so the precise cause is not flattened. The existing worker wrapping turns it intoJob FAILEDplus a failure callback."end_turn"verified against the installed SDK, not memory —anthropic/types/stop_reason.py:Literal["end_turn", "max_tokens", "stop_sequence", "tool_use", "pause_turn", "refusal"].Tests — mocks moved from
json.dumps({"summary": ...})to plain text withstop_reason, acrosstest_run_ai_summary.py,test_fast_judge.py,test_improve_prompt{,_v2}.py. New cases: quotes survive intact, truncated output still returned, truncation guard raises. 315 pass inapp/tests/crud/evaluations+ both prompt-improvement suites.Wiki —
docs/wiki/modules/evaluations.mdsaid "structured JSON output" forsummary.py; now records plain-text output plus why the schema is deliberately absent, and the prompt-improvement guard. Nodomain-map.mdchange: no entities, tables, or edges moved, and theai_summary/ConfigVersionshapes are identical.Checklist

Two things a reviewer should know are deliberately out of scope:
prompt_improvement. Its new guard catchesmax_tokensonly; an early string close reportsend_turn, so the guard passes. Worse there than insummary.py: with two required fields, after the string closes early the grammar forces,"rationale":..., sojson.loadsreturns both keys withimproved_instructionsamputated — zero signal. Closing it means droppingjson_schemathere too and switching to delimiter-separated output. Left out of this PR to keep the blast radius small; say the word and it is a small follow-up.One caveat on confidence: the diagnosis is correlational — strong correlation and a verified mechanism, but not a controlled reproduction. The new warning is the falsification test: if truncation reappears with
stop_reason=end_turn, the quote theory was wrong and the model is simply stopping early. The fix is right either way, since a one-field JSON wrapper never earned its place.Summary by CodeRabbit
