Summary

when the prompt-improvement worker's Anthropic call failed, the RuntimeError it raised carried only a generic, hand-written hint ("rate limit exceeded, wait a minute and retry"). Anthropic's actual response body was never included, so the error_message stored on the Job row, and delivered to the client callback, never said what the provider actually rejected. A 400 for max_tokens over the model ceiling and a 400 for a malformed schema looked identical to whoever was
triaging.

  • New _anthropic_error_detail(exc) helper. It prefers the raw response body(exc.response.text, i.e. Anthropic's own
{"type":"error","error":{"message":...}}), falls back to str(exc) for connection/timeout errors which never reach a response, and guards the .text read since httpx raises if the body was never read.
  • All six except branches in _call_prompt_drafting_llm now append | anthropic_response: <body> to the raised message, and use raise ... from exc so the traceback chain survives.
  • The detail is capped at 500 chars, this string lands in a DB column and in an outbound webhook payload, so an oversized provider body shouldn't bloat either.

Resulting Job.error_message:

prompt_generation_failed: Anthropic returned HTTP 400 — retry or contact Kaapi if persistent | anthropic_response: {"type":"error","error":{"type":"invalid_request_error","message":"max_tokens: 16384 > 8192, which is the maximum for this model"}}

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Prompt-improvement error handling now extracts bounded Anthropic response details and includes them in runtime, job, and callback error messages. Tests cover extraction fallbacks, exception handlers, worker propagation, and configuration errors. Documentation describes the callback behavior.

Changes

Anthropic error detail propagation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Extract and append Anthropic error details
backend/app/services/evaluations/prompt_improvement.py
The service extracts response text with fallbacks, truncates it to 500 characters, and appends it to handled Anthropic and unexpected error messages.
Validate and document propagated error details
backend/app/tests/api/routes/test_improve_prompt.py, docs/wiki/modules/evaluations.md
Tests cover extraction fallbacks, exception handlers, missing configuration, worker error propagation, and callback payloads. Documentation describes the propagated provider response body.

Priority: ⬇️ Low — Defer this change because it is limited to adding Anthropic response details to prompt-improvement error messages and tests.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to d104f

Prompt-improvement failures now expose provider details in job and callback error messages. The detail can exceed the documented 500-character limit by three characters, a small bounded discrepancy that should be corrected before relying on that limit as exact.

Document the fallback result contract.

_anthropic_error_detail can return response text, str(exc), or an exception type name. Its docstring currently promises only what Anthropic sent. Update docs/wiki/modules/evaluations.md line 41 to describe the bounded provider detail and these fallbacks.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep the emitted detail within the 500-character limit.

This slice keeps 500 characters and then appends "...", so the returned detail is 503 characters. Reserve the suffix length before slicing. Update backend/app/tests/api/routes/test_improve_prompt.py line 948 to assert the 500-character total.

Proposed fix
- detail = detail[:_UPSTREAM_ERROR_DETAIL_MAX_LENGTH] + "..."
+ detail = detail[: _UPSTREAM_ERROR_DETAIL_MAX_LENGTH - len("...")] + "..."

Narrow the JSON body parameter type.

dict does not define the payload shape. Use dict[str, Any] or a local JSON type alias for body.
