fix(evaluations): Compact traces for prompt - #1274

Conversation
A 500-row Hindi judge run failed prompt improvement with Anthropic's "prompt is too long: 1121367 tokens > 1000000 maximum". The drafting brief shipped the raw score-trace file: json.dumps' default \uXXXX escaping inflated every Devanagari character, each duplication-factor repeat re-sent question + ground truth, and trace_id / data_type / verdict / guardrail bookkeeping rode along unused. _compact_traces_for_brief now projects traces to what the brief reads: one entry per question with repeats nested as attempts, scores reduced to name/value/comment/unscoreable, and guardrail-rewritten rows substituting input_to_llm / output_from_llm for the user-facing text. The JSON is dumped with ensure_ascii=False. Both v1 and v2 briefs describe the new shape and tell the model that score spread across attempts signals inconsistency. …brief Mirrors summary.py::_format_traces_for_prompt, the sibling that shapes the same traces for the other Claude call. Docstring now says why group_traces_by_question_id (the export shape) is not reused. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>

BriefQuestion / BriefAttempt / BriefScore spell out the shape handed to the drafting LLM; _format_traces_for_brief now takes list[TraceData] and returns list[BriefQuestion] instead of untyped dicts. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
TraceQuestion / TraceAttempt / TraceScoreSummary sit next to the TraceData / TraceScore vocabulary they are derived from. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Keep each attempt with its effective question.
When repeated traces share a question_id but have different input_to_llm values, setdefault keeps only the first rewritten question. The brief then presents later answers and scores as attempts at a question the model did not receive. Split these groups by effective question, or include the effective question in each attempt.

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Do not send pre-redaction answers to the drafting LLM.
When an output guardrail removes sensitive text, output_from_llm can still contain that text. This projection sends the pre-redaction answer to Anthropic instead of the guarded llm_answer. Keep the guarded answer in the external brief, or apply an equivalent redaction before serialization.

Collapse the Trace* TypedDict docstrings to one line to match TraceScore / TraceData, drop comments that restate the code, and reduce _trace_score_summary to a single key filter. Replace the `is None` guard on the downloaded trace blob with `isinstance(..., list)`, which both validates the shape and narrows the type pyright flagged at the _draft_improved_prompt call. Summary
A 500-row Hindi judge run failed
POST /api/v2/evaluations/{id}/improve-promptwithprompt is too long: 1121367 tokens > 1000000 maximum. We were sending the whole trace file to Claude as-is. This PR sends less data, so the same run now fits comfortably.
What changed in the data we send
New helper
_format_traces_for_briefinservices/evaluations/prompt_improvement.pyprepares the traces before the Claude call. Three changes:json.dumpsturns every Hindi character into a\uXXXXcode (6 characters each). That made Hindi runs several times bigger than English runs of the same size. Now we passensure_ascii=Falseso the text goes through unchanged. This is the biggest win.attempts. Bonus: the runs sit next to each other, so Claude can see when the same question gets very different scores, which means the prompt is not consistent.trace_id,data_type,verdict,category,guardrailare removed. If guardrails rewrote a question or answer, we send what the LLM actually saw and produced (input_to_llm/output_from_llm) instead of the original text, since that is what the prompt acts on.We also use compact JSON separators (no spaces), which saves about 2% more.
Numbers
Test data: 500 rows, 167 Hindi questions, each run 3 times, with 3 judge scores and Hindi comments per row. Token counts use
tiktoken(cl100k_base) as a stand-in, since Claude's tokenizer is not public. Exact numbers will differ on Claude, but the ratios hold.json.dumpsThe new shape is typed with
TraceQuestion/TraceAttempt/TraceScoreSummaryTypedDicts next to the helper. The prompt text for v1 and v2 was updated to describe the new shape. No eval data is lost. Both v1 and v2 use_draft_improved_prompt, so both benefit.Small extra: the downloaded trace file is now checked with
isinstance(traces, list)instead ofis None. This catches a bad file before the Claude call and fixes a pyright error.Checklist
