Review comments at @docs/advanced/benchmark-plan.md:
- Line 28: Update the timing statistics description in the benchmark plan to say
minimum, median, and average wall time instead of minimum, mean, and maximum,
matching the harness implementation and performance documentation. Leave the
surrounding output-format description unchanged.
- Around line 44-45: Update the Linux and macOS fallback descriptions in the
benchmark plan: specify that Linux polls `/proc/<pid>/status` for `VmHWM`, and
that macOS uses `getrusage(RUSAGE_CHILDREN)` through the Python helper. Remove
the inaccurate `VmRSS` detail and the nonexistent macOS proc-probe path.
Review comments at @docs/advanced/performance.md:
- Around line 60-62: Update docs/advanced/performance.md, lines 60–62, to name
scripts/fetch_bench_fixtures.sh. In docs/advanced/benchmark-plan.md, lines
32–37, use the harness’s actual scripts/fixtures/wasm and
scripts/fixtures/token/src/lib.rs paths, correct WESm_DIR to WASM_DIR, and name
scripts/fetch_bench_fixtures.sh.
Review comments at @scripts/bench_offline.sh:
- Around line 82-93: Update the `proc` probe to print `unavailable` when `peak`
is zero, while preserving the measured peak output when a positive RSS value was
observed.
- Around line 134-138: Update the RSS median logic to check every sample in the
`rss` array; if any sample is `unavailable`, set `rss_med` to `unavailable`, and
otherwise preserve the existing numeric median calculation.
- Around line 94-101: Update the rusage probe to convert macOS ru_maxrss values
from bytes to kB before printing, so its output matches the peakRSS kB label.
Keep the subprocess invocation and existing measurement flow unchanged.
Review comments at @scripts/fetch_bench_fixtures.sh:
- Line 22: Update the REPO_ROOT assignment to use pwd instead of pds, so
resolving the repository directory does not fail before option handling.
- Line 90: Update the download call in the loop to pass the defined src variable
instead of the unset ssrc variable, so audit-source downloads proceed with set
-u enabled.
- Line 40: Update the `sed` range in the `--help` handling to print the usage
text on lines 10–18 instead of script implementation lines 23–40.
- Line 58: Change the wasm_files and audit_srcs name lists from associative to
indexed arrays, then update their loops to iterate over "${wasm_files[@]}" and
"${audit_srcs[@]}" so every fixture name is processed.
- Line 1: Correct the shebang in the fetch_bench_fixtures.sh script to use
/usr/bin/env bash so the operating system can locate and launch Bash.
- Line 85: Update the WASM source used by the `download` call in the
fixture-fetching flow so it points to built artifacts that actually exist for
the selected ref. Use a pinned source ref that builds the contracts or the
correct paths and names for published artifacts, ensuring the default `main` ref
no longer requests ignored files from `target/`.
- Line 24: Update the default out_dir assignment to use the initialized
REPO_ROOT variable instead of the unset REFO_ROOT variable, so the default
invocation works with set -u.
- Line 82: Update the download function to create the parent directory of dst
before invoking either curl or wget, so nested destinations such as
examples/token/src/lib.rs can be written.

The CI workflows pass, but the new fixture-fetching script contains several blocking issues, including an invalid shebang, an invalid "pds" command, an unset "REFO_ROOT" variable, an undefined "$ssrc" variable, and malformed "case" syntax. Please fix the script, verify that fixture downloads work from the documented upstream source, correct the macOS RSS units, and align the fixture paths and script names across the documentation. Then run the benchmark harness and fixture-fetching script end to end. Verdict: Not ready to merge. |
Address the review findings on the offline benchmark harness:
- bench_offline.sh
* Measure wall-clock on the bare command so RSS sampling (a Python
helper on macOS, a polling loop on Linux) never inflates the timings.
* /proc fallback: report "unavailable" when no sample was taken instead
of emitting 0 kB.
* macOS rusage: ru_maxrss is in bytes, convert to kB (was ~1e6x too big).
* Any "unavailable" sample now makes the whole RSS column unavailable
rather than producing a meaningless median over mixed values.
* Detect GNU time via "type -P" (skips the shell builtin) and allow
RSS_MODE to be forced, so the fallback path is testable.
* Defaults now point at committed fixtures: scripts/fixtures/wasm and
examples/sample_token/src/lib.rs. Fail with an actionable message
instead of silently benchmarking missing files.
* The "pin=" line is unchanged; the probe is reported on its own
"rss=" line so existing parsers keep working.
- fetch_bench_fixtures.sh (rewritten)
* Fix the shebang, the undefined "pds"/"REFO_ROOT"/"$ssrc" typos, the
malformed associative-array loop, and the missing mkdir -p.
* soroban-examples publishes no pre-built WASM (target/ is gitignored
and its releases carry no assets), so fetch the sources at a pinned
commit and build them with "stellar contract build".
* Write scripts/fixtures/MANIFEST.txt with the source ref and SHA-256
of every artifact.
- fixtures: commit token/liquidity_pool/atomic_swap/timelock WASM built
from soroban-examples@03d42aa, so the harness runs out of the box.
- docs: align script names, fixture paths, WASM_DIR spelling and the
timing-stats description across performance.md / benchmark-plan.md;
record the measured 2.7.0 baseline with host profile and date, plus the
RSS-unavailable verification run.
- examples/sample_token/src/lib.rs: revert the comment-only churn (it
lowered doc coverage and the harness never used it); the audit source
is now documented as examples/sample_token/src/lib.rs.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
GNU time branch can report a wrong RSS and runs a second time per sample.
Code path: measure_rss re-runs the command. This is intended. But out=$($PIN "$GNU_TIME" -v "$@" 2>&1 >/dev/null) captures the command's own stderr together with the time report. This is acceptable. However, the comment on lines 97-98 claims a missing field produces unavailable, and the code does that correctly via ${rss:-unavailable}. A value of 0 from GNU time on some platforms is still passed through as a valid sample. This conflicts with the "never zero" contract in the header.
Fix: treat 0 as unavailable.

Isolate the build from CARGO_TARGET_DIR.
The pinned soroban-examples tree is not a workspace for these crates. A normal build therefore uses each crate's target directory. However, Cargo honors an inherited CARGO_TARGET_DIR, which can redirect the artifact outside the path searched here. With set -euo pipefail, a missing search directory makes the assignment fail before the explicit no wasm produced error runs. find also prints its own path error, so the failure is not silent.
Force a per-crate target directory and keep the lookup fallback:
