chore: add CODEOWNERS for supply-chain sensitive paths - #486
Conversation
Assigns ownership of the paths that can execute code or ship binary assets: .vscode/, .devcontainer/, package.json, .github/workflows/, .github/CODEOWNERS, scripts/guard/, tests/guard/, public/fonts/, dist/. Last-match-wins ordering (most-specific last). No wildcard rule, so Rust source ownership is not affected. Note: this file records intent. It only becomes a mandatory review rule once branch protection enables 'Require review from Code Owners' on main. That protection is NOT currently enabled (protection API returns 404) and is deliberately not part of this PR.

Root-caused via git ls-files: tracked lockfile at crates/sdkt-playground/Cargo.lock was not covered by the /Cargo.lock rule (anchored at repo root; nested lockfiles need their own entry). Validated with the @hmarr/codeowners port (same path_to_regex semantics as github.com/gitlab CODEOWNERS): 22 tracked lockfile now resolves to @naninu123; 22-path sensitivity matrix covered, 0 uncovered, all 22 rules owned by @naninu123.
Summary
Add
.github/CODEOWNERSassigning the supply-chain-sensitive paths to@naninu123, so review is required when branch protection is enabled (seeState below for current status).
Changes
.github/CODEOWNERS(new) — ownership rules for:/.vscode/— auto-execution surface (the incident used.vscode/tasks.json)/.devcontainer/— dev-container auto-run hooks/package.json— npm lifecycle hooks/.github/workflows/— any CI step can run arbitrary code/.github/CODEOWNERS— the file itself/scripts/guard/and/tests/guard/— the guardrail code and fixtures/public/fonts/and/dist/— binary/font assets (payload disguised as a font)Last-match-wins ordering is used (most-specific last). No wildcard
*ruleis added, to avoid assigning ownership of all Rust source to one person.
Current state
mainis not protected:gh api repos/.../branches/main/protectionreturns 404 ("Branch not protected"), and the rulesets endpoint returns an
empty array.
package.jsonand no.devcontainer/, but the rulesare preventive: they engage as soon as such files are introduced.
Effect
A CODEOWNERS entry alone does not block merges. It only matters once
branch protection enables "Require review from Code Owners" with
"Dismiss stale pull request approvals automatically" and "Restrict
dismissals" as needed. That protection enablement is not included in this
PR and requires separate explicit approval.
