"Ending the wall here leaves out N ft you walked" shows during tilt tasks, unprompted #66
Description
"Ending the wall here leaves out N ft you walked" shows under the wall strip during tilt tasks, when the homeowner hasn't asked to end the wall. Nothing ties it to the "Wall ends here" button, so it reads as a warning that something went wrong.
Seen in. Device field test of TestFlight build 4.1 (beta at 45017ba), iPhone 14 without LiDAR, iOS 26.6.2. Times are in each run's screen recording. All three runs:
- Run 1 (indoor mock wall), 1:49–2:00: "leaves out 2 ft you walked" during "Tilt down…".
- Run 2 (same mock wall), 2:02–2:06: "2 ft"; 2:28–2:38: "3 ft", then "5 ft", "4 ft", "2 ft", during tilt tasks.
- Run 3 (a real house), 0:38, 0:54–0:56 and 1:10–1:14: "2 / 5 / 8 / 11 ft" while the tester walked away from the wall into the yard, not along it.
What happens. The line sits in the strip's legend with the end-preview swatch while the card asks to tilt down or up. The number changes as the phone moves (run 3 counted up to 11 ft while walking out from the wall). The tester didn't press "Wall ends here" and nothing on screen says the line is about that button.
Cause.
- During
.aimAtGround,.aimAtWalland.stepBack, the end on offer is the side of the meter the phone is on, so an end preview exists on every tilt task (ScanEngine+Ends.swift#L13-L27). - Its
leavesOutWalkedis set whenever the phone's projected place is at least one keyframe spacing short of the farthest walked point (ScanEngine+Ends.swift#L59-L62). Stepping back from the wall or walking out at an angle moves the projected place. - The strip shows it in the legend whenever it is set (
WallTape.swift#L87-L100, copy atScanCopy.swift#L105-L108).
Fix direction.
- Show the "leaves out" line only while the walk asks to walk that side or mark its end, or while "Wall ends here" is pressed or about to be confirmed.
- Or attach it to the button ("Wall ends here: leaves out 2 ft you walked"), so it reads as that button's consequence.
- Consider hiding it when the phone is far out from the wall, where the projected place along the wall means little.
Related.
- "Can't get there" during the walk can put the wall's end at the meter, and the rest of the walk is dropped #24 (where "Can't get there" / "Wall ends here" put the end).
