The target ring and arrows show no progress, aren't explained, and the arrow can contradict the card #81

Description

@AidenJohnston

The blue target ring and the blue chevron bubbles carry most of the walk's guidance, but nothing explains them, the ring doesn't change while it's held on target, and the chevron can point up while the card says "Tilt down".

Seen in the build 4.1 field test on 2026-09-26: TestFlight 4.1, beta at 45017ba, iPhone 14 (no LiDAR), iOS 26.6.2. Times are in the screen recordings.

  • Run 1 (20:00, indoor mock wall): questions about "the blue circle" at 0:41, 0:53, 0:58 and 5:47 (7 mentions in all); an up chevron during "Tilt down" at 3:44–3:46.
  • Run 2 (20:15, the same wall): an up chevron during "Tilt down" at 0:46 and 1:20, with the correct ground; "What is this blue circle for?" at 1:22.

Reports: A41-1-05, A41-2015-11, A41-2015-12.

What happens.

  • Two different blue things confused the tester:
    • the large aim ring with a centre dot;
    • the small filled circles with a chevron at the screen edge, shown when the target is off screen.
  • The ring doesn't fill, change colour or tick while it's held on target. A separate check-mark bubble appeared briefly in run 1 (0:52, 0:58, 1:52, 5:25), with nothing to say what it meant.
  • Onboarding explains the haze but not the ring or the chevrons.
  • The chevron pointed up during "Tilt down to show the ground":
  • The tester, run 1:
    • "I wonder if we could have like a loading thing where the circle goes green once it's captured" (0:47);
    • "I'm not sure what this blue circle on the ground means" (0:53);
    • "What does this blue circle want from me?" (1:00).

Cause.

  • TargetMarker draws a fixed pulsing ring and takes only a position and radius: it has no progress input (WayfindingOverlay.swift#L93-L139).
  • The ring shows while the target is inside a screen rectangle; otherwise a chevron points toward it (WayfindingOverlay.swift#L67-L90). The card's copy is fixed per task (ScanCopy.swift#L38-L39), so it never follows the chevron.
  • A ground task's target is a single point in the middle of the ground band (GuidancePlanner.swift#L280-L281), while the task needs every row from the wall's foot outward. Holding the dot in the ring is not what completes it.

Fix direction.

  • Fill the ring, or turn it green, as the task's stretch gets covered (the planner already computes the covered fraction), with a tick when it's done.
  • Add a one-line legend the first time the ring appears ("Put the dot in the ring and hold still"), and explain the chevrons in onboarding.
  • Make the card agree with the chevron: when the target is above the view during a tilt-down task, say "Tilt up a little", or just "Put the ring on the circle".
  • Explain the separate check-mark bubble, or drop it.
