Fixes #63
Part of #70, #82, #64, #80

Base: t3/ios-mvf, merged in up to d9abb8e (f14947e landed the #80 guard). Needs no other open PR.

What changed

The card's reply names what it does on each step (#63). The walk card offered "Can't get there" on every aim and tilt card, where the homeowner is already standing at the spot, so testers read it as the wrong answer and kept tilting. The words now come from a new ScanCopy.reply(for:):

Step Reply VoiceOver hint
aimAtGround, aimAtWall Skip this spot An installer will look at it instead.
tiltUp Skip this Skips the view above this part of the wall. An installer will look at it instead.
walk Can't get there unchanged
markNextWall Can't get there unchanged
seeBehind Can't see past it unchanged

Every other step, markEnd included, still offers no reply. The identifier stays action.cannotAccess, and cannotAccessArea is unchanged, so Autopilot and the engine see no difference. WallWalkScreen.asksForArea is gone, because ScanCopy.reply(for:) returning nil now says which steps have no reply.

The reply under the capture gate's coaching (#80). Keeping the reply through "Slow down", "It's too dark", "Hold steady" and "needs texture" is now on the base (f14947e, WallWalkScreen.coachingHidesReply). This PR keeps that exhaustive switch as it is: no default, so a new Coaching case has to choose whether it hides the reply. On top of it, this PR adds the per-step wording under coaching (the reply keeps its step's words, "Can't get there" or "Skip this spot", while a coaching line shows) and the tests for both: present under slowDown and tooDark, gone under relocalizing and pastWallEnd. The corner loop in #70 stays as it is until that decision.

The reply swaps with the words, and a new card's reply ignores taps for 0.6 s (#64, #82). InstructionCard swapped the words at once while the reply's position eased over 0.2 s, so the pill slid or faded over the new text (the run 3 overhead-card photo in #64). In run 3 seven quick taps on "Can't get there" each answered a different card. Now:

  • The words and the reply sit in one container keyed by the task the reply answers (.id(replyTask).transition(.identity)), so a new task replaces both. The words alone still swap on their own (.id(instruction)), so a coaching line or the walk's distance to go doesn't rebuild the button while someone is pressing it.
  • The container takes no animation when the instruction changes (.transaction(value: instruction) { $0.animation = nil }), so the words and the reply land at their final place together. Only the scrim behind them, outside that container, eases to the new height. Before this, a coaching change (which keeps the reply) eased the reply from its old place over the new words for 0.2 s.
  • The reply is .disabled for InstructionCard.replyLock (600 ms, a guess, not measured) after its task changes, through .task(id: replyTask). The lock lives only in the UI, so Autopilot's back-to-back cannotAccessArea and skipGap calls are unaffected. PressableStyle doesn't read isEnabled and the colours are set explicitly, so the pill looks the same while it's locked.
  • The brief asked for the lock on every instruction change. I keyed it on the task instead. Reply.task is the step's own words, and for the walk those words leave out the distance to go. Keyed on the instruction, a flickering "Slow down" or the distance to go ticking down would keep re-locking the reply, which would bring "It's too dark to see the wall" flickers, hides the task and its button, and asks for a light that is already on #80 back. GapRequestScreen passes its request as the task for the same reason, so coaching over a gap request doesn't lock "I can't get there".

The end question gets a third answer (#70). Under "It turns a corner" and "Something blocks it" there is now "The wall just ends" (action.endEnds), for a garden wall or fence that stops with no corner and nothing in the way. It calls answerWallEnd(turnsCorner: false), which already sets a limit end, the same path as "Something blocks it". ScanActions, the engine and the contract don't change, and ScanCopy.endQuestion keeps its words (U17 / #99 edits its detail).

Demo and tests. -uiDemoAim opens the walk on an aim-at-ground step. The demo's cannotAccessArea now skips an aim stretch and goes back to the walk. ScreenStatesUITests adds:

  • testCardReplyFollowsTheStep, which checks the reply's title on walk, aim, tilt-up and see-behind, its presence under slowDown and tooDark, and its absence under relocalizing and pastWallEnd.
  • testRepliesAnswerTheirOwnCardAndTheWallCanJustEnd, which taps "Skip this spot", then "Can't get there", then "Wall ends here" and "The wall just ends", and checks that the walk goes on to the left. Each reply tap waits for isEnabled and isHittable, because of the lock.
  • wallWalk-aim in the audited states, plus wallWalk-aim and wallWalk-slowDown at AX5.

The reply's label is read once through ElementRead.snapshot, as the rest of the file does since the #24 flake fix. The demo keeps every skipped stretch (skippedSpans) with the bands it covers, so a later skip no longer undoes an earlier one on the tape, and an aim skip marks only the band that step asked for, as the real engine does. testRepliesAnswerTheirOwnCardAndTheWallCanJustEnd checks that skipping the ground leaves the wall's "percent seen" on the map as it was.

Why

These are the parts of the five issues that needed no product decision. The rest stays open on purpose. This PR adds no "Finish scan" and no "End the scan here?" (#82 decision, U13), no Back from the next-wall step and no change to the past-end coaching (#70 decision, U12), and no ground-type chips (#63 option b).

UI changes

  • The walk card's reply reads "Skip this spot" on aim steps and "Skip this" on the tilt-up, and it stays visible under "Slow down" and "It's too dark".
  • The end question has three full-width answers.
  • On a new task, the card's words and reply change together, and the reply ignores taps for 0.6 s.
  • On any change of the card's words, the words and the reply land at once and only the scrim eases.

No captures: this machine has no Xcode or Simulator. The ScreenStatesUITests run attaches screenshots of wallWalk-aim, wallWalk-slowDown, wallWalk-tiltUp and wallWalk-endQuestion to the CI result bundle.

Verification

Run locally on Windows, which has no Swift toolchain:

  • Read every call site of the changed symbols. InstructionCard.Reply( is built only in WallWalkScreen.reply and GapRequestScreen, and task defaults to nil, so the memberwise init still compiles without it. asksForArea had one use, now removed. answerWallEnd, cannotAccessArea and action.cannotAccess keep their signatures and identifier. No existing UI test taps action.cannotAccess or action.skipGap. FullFlowUITests drives the flow through Autopilot's engine calls, so it needed no waits.
  • The switch in ScanCopy.reply(for:) is exhaustive over all 13 GuidanceStep cases, with no default.
  • git diff --check is clean.
  • The merge of t3/ios-mvf (f14947e) leaves exactly one coachingHidesReply, the base's exhaustive form, and this PR's reply guard on ScanCopy.reply(for:). asksForArea has no remaining references.
  • .transaction(value:_:) needs iOS 17; the target is iOS 26.

CI, manual iOS run on the merged head 98d96ca: https://github.com/SamGu-NRX/house-scanning-master/actions/runs/36301217657 (build, package tests, UI tests including the every-state audit). The earlier run 36297449306 was at a4b8b27, before the merge.

Only CI or a device can verify these:

  • That the app and UI test targets compile. Nothing here compiled the Swift.
  • ScreenStatesUITests, including the new tests and the accessibility audit at default size and AX5 for the new states.
  • The contrast audit failure on action.cannotAccess in testFullFlowFromLidarReplay from ci(ios): drop the background Simulator boot and the duplicate t3/ios-mvf push run #58's latest run. This PR keeps the reply's colours. If that failure came from the pill fading over new text mid-animation, the swap may clear it, but no run has shown that yet.
  • On a device: whether 0.6 s is long enough to stop chained taps and short enough not to feel stuck, and whether the swap looks right at default and accessibility text sizes. A UI test can't reliably catch the lock inside its 0.6 s window, so the tests only wait it out.

Risk

  • While gate coaching shows, the card reads "Slow down" with "Can't get there" or "Skip this spot" under it, which can read oddly until U5 turns gate coaching into a badge on the task card.
  • When new words make the card taller, the words and the reply land at their final size while the scrim is still growing, so for up to 0.2 s the pill can sit over the camera just below the scrim. This needs a look on a device; the every-state audit only sees settled frames. If it shows, the next step is to snap the scrim on growth too.
  • "The wall just ends" and "Something blocks it" export the same limit end, so the server can't tell them apart.

Files touched

  • ios/HouseScan/UI/Components/InstructionCard.swift: Reply.task, the task-keyed swap, the unanimated content, and replyLock.
  • ios/HouseScan/UI/Copy/ScanCopy.swift: the new reply(for:).
  • ios/HouseScan/UI/Screens/WallWalkScreen.swift: reply, replyTask, the doc on the base's coachingHidesReply, and the third end answer.
  • ios/HouseScan/UI/Screens/GapRequestScreen.swift: passes task: (one argument).
  • ios/HouseScan/UI/Preview/DemoEngine.swift and UIDemo.swift: -uiDemoAim, the aim skip, and skippedSpans.
  • ios/HouseScanUITests/ScreenStatesUITests.swift: the new tests and states.

Dependencies and overlaps

Checklist

  • The scope is focused; related changes belong together
  • I explained what changed and why
  • I included before/after images for visible changes. Not included: this machine has no Simulator. CI attaches screenshots of the new states.
  • I included a video for motion or interaction changes. Not included, for the same reason. The swap and the lock need a check on a device.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added contextual reply options during wall scanning, including ways to skip a spot, indicate that an area can’t be reached, or report that a wall ends.
    • Replies now match the current guidance and become available after it has been displayed briefly.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Skipping a spot now updates only the affected wall area, preserving coverage already recorded elsewhere.
    • Reply options stay in sync with the active scanning task.

… a new card

- The walk card's reply is worded per step (ScanCopy.reply(for:)): "Skip this
spot" on aim steps, "Skip this" on the tilt-up, "Can't get there" where the
walk asks to go somewhere. The identifier stays action.cannotAccess (#63).
- The reply stays under the capture gate's coaching (slow down, too dark,
hold steady, texture) and hides only for tracking coaching and past the
  wall's end (#80).
- InstructionCard swaps the words and the reply together when the task
changes, so the reply no longer slides or fades over the new words (#64),
and a new task's reply takes no taps for 0.6 s (#82). The lock is keyed on
the task, not the words, so coaching and the walk's distance to go don't
re-lock it. The gap screen passes its request as the task.
- The end question gets a third answer, "The wall just ends"
(action.endEnds), which sets a limit end like "Something blocks it" (#70).
- Demo: -uiDemoAim, and "Skip this spot" skips the aim stretch. UI tests for
the reply per step, under coaching, and a tap-through with the third answer.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Wall-walk replies now use guidance-specific labels and hints, and the reply button locks briefly when its task changes. The demo records skipped spans by coverage band. A third wall-end answer and UI tests for reply states and skip interactions were added.

ScanCopy.reply(for:) provides titles and hints for selected guidance. WallWalkScreen uses that copy for its reply and adds a “The wall just ends” answer. InstructionCard associates replies with a task and disables them until that task remains current for 600 ms. Gap replies use the active request or fallback guidance as their task. UI tests check reply labels across wall-walk states.
Skipped-span demo and interaction coverage
ios/HouseScan/UI/Preview/DemoEngine.swift, ios/HouseScan/UI/Preview/UIDemo.swift, ios/HouseScanUITests/ScreenStatesUITests.swift
DemoEngine stores skipped spans with their affected coverage bands, applies them during coverage refresh, and clears them on restart. The -uiDemoAim state sets ground-aim guidance during wall walk. UI tests check skipped coverage, wall-end answers, and continued walking.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4183f

The change is mergeable. Demo and UI-test coverage rendering can show a skipped wall span as covered after "Can't get there". This is limited to the demo engine, and a small fix is available.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4183f

The inspected changes affect scan interactions and a separate demo flow. No new privileged or cross-service path was identified. Presentation-based task identity has limitations, and an incomplete comparison with the previous version limits confidence.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The production reply reaches current scan-state mutations: skipping coverage, ending a walk, settling tilt-up, or declining the next wall. The action checks the current phase and requires coverage during wall walking. The inspected path establishes local scan effects, not additional tenant, service, or credential authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The application selects UIDemo only when launched with -uiDemo; otherwise it constructs the production ScanEngine. UIDemo constructs its own DemoEngine. The new uiDemoAim behavior and private skippedSpans storage therefore operate within the selected simulated engine, not the production engine.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Demo skip mutations execute synchronously on the main actor. The walk script checks cancellation after each pause, and startOver cancels the script, clears accumulated skip spans, resets reached positions, and removes coverage. These mechanisms contain the changed state to the demo lifecycle.

Fresh adversarial review of a4b8b27 (U6) against #63, #70, #82, #64, #80, the run 3 analysis (A41-2055-04, -05, -08) and the code on t3/ios-mvf (b9851e1, which is this PR's merge base).

Must fix

None found. I compiled the Swift in my head and checked the flows around it (see Notes). Nothing here was built, so the Should-fix item on CI below is a merge gate.

Should fix

  1. ios/HouseScan/UI/Components/InstructionCard.swift:55 and :81 to :86: under gate coaching the reply still slides over the new words (#64). The PR makes that path much more common. Before this PR, gate coaching hid the reply. Now it keeps it (correct for #80), but a coaching change only swaps message (.id(instruction)). The reply is outside that swap, so it keeps its identity and eases for 0.2 s (Motion.text) to its new place. Example: the walk's two lines become "It's too dark to see the wall / Turn on a porch light, or try again in daylight." The words swap at once, and "Can't get there" starts at its old height, on top of the new second line, then slides down. In run 3 "too dark" flickered at least 9 times in 80 s (A41-2055-04), so each flicker would now show the #64 overlap. Brief item 3 asked that only the scrim and background animate. The same thing happens in reverse when a new task is taller: the words and reply land at their final size while the scrim is still growing, so for up to 0.2 s the pill sits over the camera, outside the scrim. That could matter for #58's contrast failure on action.cannotAccess. Fix options (pick one and check it on a device):

    • (a) Stop the reply's position from animating when only the words change. For example, put a .transaction(value: instruction) { $0.animation = nil } on the reply, or move .animation(..., value: instruction) so it applies only to the scrim.
    • (b) Key the swap container on instruction and keep the lock keyed on the task. unlockedTask is @State on the card, outside the keyed subtree, so the lock survives the rebuild. The PR avoided this because a rebuild drops a press that's in progress. With remainingWalk in 5 ft steps above 5 ft, that's a narrow window.

If you keep the current design, add "too dark flickering over an aim card, default size and AX5" to the device checklist in the PR body. Right now the Risk section mentions the case but doesn't treat it as a #64 regression.

  2. Nothing has compiled, and the new audit states won't run on the PR as configured (.github/workflows/ios.yml, FULL_UI and the -skip-testing line). gh pr checks 102: only "Label PR size" passed. "iOS build" skipped because the PR is a draft, and CodeRabbit skipped too. After ready_for_review, a PR run still skips testEveryStatePassesTheAccessibilityAudit unless the full-ui label is set. That test is where the new wallWalk-aim, wallWalk-aim-AX5 and wallWalk-slowDown-AX5 audits and the three-button end question at AX5 run. Before merge, a person should start a workflow_dispatch run of the iOS workflow on t3/41-card-replies, which runs every test including the audit, and check ScreenStatesUITests, FullFlowUITests (including testFullFlowFromLidarReplay, #58's contrast check) and the app target build. Agents don't add labels.

Notes

  • Mental compile: no problems found. Instruction is Hashable, so .id and .task(id:) accept it, and unlockedTask != replyTask promotes Instruction to Instruction?. .task(id:) with Task.sleep writing @State follows the existing FogOverlay.swift:62 pattern under Swift 6 strict concurrency. Reply.task comes after perform, so the memberwise order matches GapRequestScreen.swift:36-39, and the default of nil keeps the other call site compiling. ScanCopy.reply(for:) (ScanCopy.swift:291) covers all 13 GuidanceStep cases with no default, and its switch expression with nil branches follows the InstructionCard.iconName pattern. coachingHidesReply matches optional patterns with a default, so a new U5 gate case keeps the reply. The removed asksForArea had one use. waitForNonExistence, XCTNSPredicateExpectation and @MainActor helpers all have precedents in the file. arrow.right.to.line is a real SF Symbol. Nothing in HouseScanKit changed, so no public-access concerns.
  • Lock vs the run 3 evidence: it covers the chain. A41-2055-05 shows g3 to g9 resolved 0.2 to 0.5 s apart. Each card's task has different words: tilt down at the meter, walk left, walk right, tilt up, then tilt down at 8 ft 9 in, 12 ft and 5 ft 6 in. So each new reply is locked for longer than the gap between taps. The aim task's s stays fixed while the task is kept (planner sameStretch and dwell), and the tilt-up span is fixed once both ends are set, so keying on the words doesn't keep re-locking. Known gap: two consecutive aimAtWall tasks within 3 in of the meter both read "At your meter." and wouldn't lock. That's rare. Moving from the walk to the gap screen builds a new card, so "I can't get there" also starts locked there, which covers the later "I can't get there" in the chain.
  • Keying the lock on the task, not the instruction differs from the brief. The PR body explains it, and it's right: keying on the instruction would re-lock under flickering coaching and on every distance-to-go change, which would bring #80 back.
  • The brief said markEnd should keep "Can't get there", but the base never offered a reply on markEnd (asksForArea left it out), and the PR keeps that. It doesn't add a new behaviour, so that's the right call, and the body says so.
  • The reply now shows under a coaching line that hides the task it answers (WallWalkScreen.swift:271-300). Under "It's too dark", "Can't get there" on a walk card silently sets an unexplored end for a task the homeowner can't see. The brief asked for this, and the Risk section flags it. It reads correctly only once U5 turns gate coaching into a badge, so land U5 soon after this PR.
  • Scope. GapRequestScreen.swift:39 and UIDemo.swift aren't in the unit's file list, but both follow from the change: the lock is in the shared card, and the demo argument needs documenting. On the gap screen, "I can't get there" now ignores taps for 0.6 s when it appears and on each new request. That behaviour change is intended, and it fits #49. No project.yml or project.pbxproj edits, no engine, ScanActions or contract change, and neither WallWalkScreen.instruction nor ScanCopy.endQuestion is touched. No Finish scan, Back or chips, so no product decision was slipped in.
  • "The wall just ends" (WallWalkScreen.swift:184-195) goes through answerWallEnd(turnsCorner: false) and then setEndKind(side, .limit) (ScanEngine+Actions.swift:126), the same as "Something blocks it". The body notes that the server can't tell them apart. The #70 decision may want a separate kind later.
  • Tests. testCardReplyFollowsTheStep (ScreenStatesUITests.swift:178) runs against the frozen demo (run returns early under -uiDemoFreeze), so the aim, tilt-up and see-behind states hold still. The tap-through (:215) follows the demo's actual path: aim skip, then walk right, then Can't get there (reachedRight = 4.3), then markEnd, the end question, endEnds, and walk left. The demo's -uiDemoAim state also shows "Wall ends here" (action.endHere), and the real engine does the same on aim steps (endOnOffer), so the audited state is one the app can really show. Neither test can observe the 0.6 s lock, as the body says. The per-step test relaunches the app 8 times, which adds a little CI time.
  • Public-repo check: the diff, the PR body and the commit message contain no names, meter numbers, addresses, private/ content or media. The PR body has Fixes/Part of, base, what was verified locally vs what needs CI or a device, files touched, dependencies and overlaps, and the attribution line. GitHub reports the PR as MERGEABLE/CLEAN against t3/ios-mvf.

@AidenJohnston Independent review at a4b8b27 confirms task/reply identity now changes together for task transitions. A remaining transition risk needs verification: InstructionCard.swift:55 swaps the message on coaching changes while lines 81-86 retain replyTask identity and animate instruction-driven layout. The reply can still move from its old position while the new taller message is present; #104 adds a coaching line through that path. Please capture this transition or isolate reply layout from the background animation. Source establishes the animation path, not a proven overlap frame.

Frozen UI states and waiting out the 600 ms lock do not validate transition overlap or rapid-tap rejection. Manual exact-head run 36297449306 passed: 381 package tests in 62 suites, successful iOS build, 18 UI tests with one optional recording skip and no failures. The every-state accessibility audit actually executed and passed. This still does not validate the coaching transition or rapid-tap sequence above. The gap request's task-hiding coaching behavior is separately reported on #104; no clearance yet.

Fresh adversarial review of a4b8b27 (U6) against #63, #70, #82, #64, #80, the run 3 analysis and the current tip of t3/ios-mvf (f14947e). This adds to the earlier review and the owner's comment. It doesn't repeat what they cover, except where the base has moved since.

Must fix

  1. The PR no longer merges: ios/HouseScan/UI/Screens/WallWalkScreen.swift:268-300 conflicts with f14947e on t3/ios-mvf. gh pr view 102 now reports mergeable: CONFLICTING / DIRTY. The earlier review saw it as clean because it was written against the old merge base, b9851e1. Since then, f14947e ("Keep 'Can't get there' on screen through the capture gate's coaching") landed the #80 guard on the base. It adds its own private var coachingHidesReply as an exhaustive switch with no default, and it keeps asksForArea in the reply guard. git merge-tree shows one conflict hunk across coachingHidesReply and reply. Two easy resolutions fail to compile:

    • Keep both sides and you get "invalid redeclaration of coachingHidesReply".
    • Keep the base's guard and you get "cannot find asksForArea in scope", because this PR deletes it.

Fix expected: rebase onto origin/t3/ios-mvf. Keep this PR's reply (the ScanCopy.reply(for:) guard, with no asksForArea) and exactly one coachingHidesReply. I'd keep the base's exhaustive form, so a new Coaching case (U5) has to choose whether it hides the reply. Whichever you keep, update the PR body to match: it currently says "A new gate coaching case, if U5 adds one, keeps the reply by default". Also rewrite the body's #80 paragraph: keeping the reply under gate coaching is now on the base, and this PR adds the per-step wording and the tests for it. Then start a new manual iOS workflow run on the rebased head. Run 36297449306 was at a4b8b27 and doesn't cover the merged code.

Should fix

  1. ios/HouseScan/UI/Components/InstructionCard.swift:55 and :81-86: on a coaching change the reply still slides over the new words (#64). The head doesn't change this yet. The earlier review and the owner's comment both raised it. I'm repeating it because after the rebase this is the main path: the base now keeps the reply under gate coaching. A coaching change only swaps message (.id(instruction)). The container keeps its .id(replyTask), so the button keeps its identity. .animation(Motion.text, value: instruction) then eases its position for 0.2 s. For example, the walk card's two lines become "It's too dark to see the wall / Turn on a porch light, or try again in daylight." The pill starts at its old y, on top of the new second line, then slides down. In run 3 "too dark" flickered at least 9 times in 80 s (A41-2055-04). Brief item 3 asked that only the scrim and background animate.
    • Fix expected: keep the button's identity, so a press under way survives, but don't animate the content's layout on instruction. Scope the animation to the scrim (for example, put the ScrimShape background's animation on the background itself, and use .transaction(value: instruction) { $0.animation = nil } on the VStack). Then the words and the reply land together and only the scrim eases.
    • Also capture the reverse case on a device. When a task change makes the card taller, the new words and pill land at their final size while the scrim is still growing. For up to 0.2 s the pill sits over the camera outside the scrim, which is the kind of frame #58's contrast audit caught.

Notes

  • Tests read the element live (ios/HouseScanUITests/ScreenStatesUITests.swift:201-202). shown.exists and then shown.label are two live reads. After #24's flake fix (bc5a1ac / 94e87b5, now on the base), this file reads elements once through ElementRead.snapshot. The element doesn't disappear in these frozen states, so the risk is low. After the rebase, ElementRead.snapshot(shown)?.label would match the base's convention.
  • The demo's skipped stretch gets overwritten (ios/HouseScan/UI/Preview/DemoEngine.swift:799). The demo keeps a single skippedSpan, so a later skip replaces the aim skip. In testRepliesAnswerTheirOwnCardAndTheWallCanJustEnd, "Skip this spot" skips 0.1–1.1 m. "Can't get there" then sets 1.0–4.3 m, and the 0.1–1.0 m cells go back to their reach state on the tape. This only affects the demo and its screenshots, and no assertion reads it. Worth a comment, or an array of spans.
  • Lock vs the #82 evidence. The seven taps took about 2.5 s, and each next card's button appeared 0.2–0.5 s after the tap before it. Every card in that chain has different words, so the 0.6 s lock keyed on the task covers it. Keying on the task rather than the instruction is explained in the body and is right for #80. The known gap: two tasks in a row with identical words wouldn't re-lock. That's rare, because a skip marks ±0.5 m.
  • Mental compile: no problems found. A manual run confirmed the build at a4b8b27:
    • Instruction is Hashable, which .id and .task(id:) need.
    • Reply.task has a default and comes after perform, so both call sites compile.
    • ScanCopy.reply(for:) covers all 13 GuidanceStep cases with no default.
    • Task.sleep(for:) inside a .task on a MainActor view is fine under strict concurrency.
    • Nothing in HouseScanKit changed.
  • No UI test taps action.cannotAccess or action.skipGap apart from the new ones. I grepped the base's HouseScanUITests. FullFlowUITests drives Autopilot's engine calls, so the UI lock can't slow it down.
  • "The wall just ends" (WallWalkScreen.swift:184-195) goes through answerWallEnd(turnsCorner: false) and sets a limit end, which matches the #70 comment. The arrow.right.to.line symbol also points right at the left end. That's cosmetic.
  • Scope is clean. No project.yml or project.pbxproj edits, no engine, ScanActions or contract change, and neither WallWalkScreen.instruction nor ScanCopy.endQuestion is touched. No Finish scan, Back or ground chips. The edits to GapRequestScreen.swift and UIDemo.swift follow from the shared card and the new demo argument.
  • Public-repo check. The diff, the body and the commit message contain no names, meter numbers, addresses, private material or media. The body uses plan unit IDs (U4, U5, U12, U13, U17) that nothing in the public repo defines. That's not a leak, but readers can't look them up, so issue or PR numbers would read better. The body has Fixes/Part of, base, what was verified locally vs what needs CI or a device, files touched, dependencies and the attribution line. "Needs no other PR" and the #80 text need the rebase edit from Must fix 1.
  • CI (gh pr checks 102): only "Label PR size" passed. "iOS build" skipped because the PR is a draft, and CodeRabbit skipped too. So the only iOS evidence is the owner's manual run 36297449306 at a4b8b27, which passed the build, the package tests and the UI tests, including the every-state audit. It has to be run again after the rebase.

Resolves the conflict with f14947e in WallWalkScreen: one
coachingHidesReply, the base's exhaustive switch with no default, and
this branch's reply guard on ScanCopy.reply(for:) without asksForArea.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
A coaching change swaps the card's words but keeps the reply, and the
stack's eased layout slid the reply over the new words for 0.2 s (#64).
The stack now takes no animation when the instruction changes; the scrim
behind it still eases to the new height.

The reply test reads the label once through ElementRead, and the demo
keeps every skipped stretch instead of the last one.

Addressed the review of a4b8b27 (#102 (review)). New head: 98d96ca.

Must fix

  1. Conflict with f14947e in WallWalkScreen.swift. Fixed in 722df5f. I merged origin/t3/ios-mvf (f14947e) into the branch instead of rebasing, because a rebase would need a force push and this branch only takes plain pushes. The PR now reports MERGEABLE. The resolution:

PR body: I rewrote the "It's too dark to see the wall" flickers, hides the task and its button, and asks for a light that is already on #80 paragraph. Keeping the reply under gate coaching is now on the base, and this PR adds the per-step wording and the tests. I dropped "keeps the reply by default". The base line now reads "merged in up to f14947e … Needs no other open PR".

CI: a new manual iOS run is going on the merged head 98d96ca: https://github.com/SamGu-NRX/house-scanning-master/actions/runs/36301217657. I haven't seen its result yet.

Should fix

  1. The reply slid over the new words on a coaching change (The overhead task is asked from 19 ft away, and its card's button overlaps the text #64). Fixed in 98d96ca. The card's content stack now has .transaction(value: instruction) { $0.animation = nil }, so the words and the reply land together. ScrimShape is the .background outside that stack, so it still eases under the outer .animation(…, value: instruction). Other behaviour is unchanged:

    • The button keeps its identity on a words-only change, so a press under way survives.
    • The task-keyed .id(replyTask) swap still applies.
    • .animation(Motion.text, value: reply == nil) still fades the reply in and out when only its presence changes.

The reverse case can't be captured here. When the card grows, the pill can sit just below the growing scrim for up to 0.2 s, and this machine has no Simulator or device to capture it. It is listed under Risk in the body with the next step: snap the scrim on growth too.

Notes, also done because they were cheap

  • Tests read the element live. testCardReplyFollowsTheStep now reads the label once, with ElementRead.snapshot(shown)?.label. ElementRead is @MainActor, and so is the test.
  • The demo's skipped stretch was overwritten. DemoEngine now keeps skippedSpans: [ClosedRange<Float>]. The three skip sites append, coverage marks every span, and reset clears the array. The only references are in DemoEngine.swift.
  • Plan unit IDs in the body. Left as they are, because they sit next to the issue or PR numbers where those exist.

Checks

  • No server files changed, so I didn't run the server suite.
  • There is no Swift toolchain here. I re-read every changed call site:
    • InstructionCard.Reply( is built only in WallWalkScreen and GapRequestScreen.
    • Coaching has 8 cases, and all of them are covered.
    • .transaction(value:_:) needs iOS 17, and the target is 26.
    • Instruction is Hashable.
  • I updated the PR body's Verification, Risk, Files touched and Dependencies sections.

@AidenJohnston Bounded review at 98d96ca: the instruction-keyed transaction now disables animation of the content stack, addressing the coaching-change reply-layout mechanism from my earlier comment. The base merge also reconciles coachingHidesReply. Runtime transition/rapid-tap evidence remains pending; exact-head manual36301217657 is in progress. No new source blocker in this corrective scope.

Verdict: blocked

  • The code fix holds at 98d96ca. The reply guard uses ScanCopy.reply(for:) with no asksForArea, and there is exactly one coachingHidesReply, the base's exhaustive switch with no default. The PR body now describes the "It's too dark to see the wall" flickers, hides the task and its button, and asks for a light that is already on #80 guard as on the base.
  • It still doesn't merge. t3/ios-mvf has moved from f14947e to d4e008c, and GitHub shows the PR as CONFLICTING / DIRTY again. git merge-tree finds one conflict, in ScreenStatesUITests.swift largestTextStates: the base adds "spotConfirm", "spotConfirm-answered" and this PR adds "wallWalk-aim", "wallWalk-slowDown". Keep all four. InstructionCard.swift merges cleanly with the base's .transition(.identity) on the reply (8a9ee81).
  • Fix: merge origin/t3/ios-mvf (d4e008c) again. In the body, change "merged in up to f14947e" to d4e008c. Then start a new iOS workflow_dispatch run on the new head. Run 36301217657 was at 98d96ca and doesn't include the base's spot-confirm screens or d4e008c's UI-test tap fix.
  • The earlier CI failure (testCantGetThereEndsWhereThePhoneIs, gapRequest never appeared) also hits the base, so it isn't from this PR. The rerun should show whether d4e008c fixes it.

P2 Badge Preserve the skipped surface band in demo coverage

When the demo handles an aimAtGround or aimAtWall reply, it stores only the span, and refreshCoverage() later marks that span skipped in both wallCells and groundCells (lines 526–527). The real engine marks only the requested band in ScanEngine+Actions.swift, so tapping “Skip this spot” in -uiDemoAim incorrectly clears missing wall coverage as well as ground coverage, making demo screenshots and UI-flow tests exercise a different state from production. Store the requested band with each skipped span and update only that band.

@AidenJohnston I verified current-head Codex thread4114572186 against98d96caa: DemoEngine stores only skipped spans and applies each to both wall and ground at lines526-527, while an aim reply is band-specific. Please retain the requested band with each demo skip and assert that the other band stays unchanged. This affects demo/test fidelity, not established production capture behavior; keep it within the existing repair branch.

[Medium risk] Updates card reply text and adds reply-locking behavior to instruction cards.

The PR should not merge until the new wall-end answer preserves the distinction it asks the homeowner to make.

Fix All in Claude CodeFindings

  1. P1 Wall ending recorded as blocked ▶
  2. P2 Reply lock remains untested ▶
  3. P2 Reply lock goes untested ▶
Fix with agent prompt
### Issue 1
ios/HouseScan/UI/Screens/WallWalkScreen.swift:188
When someone chooses “The wall just ends,” this button calls the same `answerWallEnd(turnsCorner: false)` path as “Something blocks it.” That path records a `.limit` end, which the engine defines as a wall blocked by a fence, gate, or property line. The exported scan therefore records a wall that simply stops as an obstructed wall, losing the distinction this new answer asks the homeowner to make.

Note: If this suggestion doesn't match your team's coding style, reply to this and let me know. I'll remember it for next time!

### Issue 2
ios/HouseScanUITests/ScreenStatesUITests.swift:489-494
`tapReply` waits until the button is enabled before every tap. The new interaction test therefore cannot catch a regression where a new card accepts taps during its first 600 ms-the behavior the lock is meant to prevent. A timed check that an early tap does nothing would cover that risk.

### Issue 3
ios/HouseScanUITests/ScreenStatesUITests.swift:497-502
The interaction test waits for each reply to become enabled before tapping it. It checks that the flow continues, but not that taps are ignored during the new 600 ms lock. Removing the lock would therefore leave this test passing; a check of the locked state would protect the behavior this PR adds.

Note: If this suggestion doesn't match your team's coding style, reply to this and let me know. I'll remember it for next time!

For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.
Summary

The PR gives wall-walk replies step-specific wording, swaps and briefly locks replies when the card task changes, adds a third wall-end answer, and expands the demo and UI tests.

  • The new wall-end answer currently exports as an obstructed limit end.
  • The interaction tests do not check that taps during the lock are rejected.

"Skip this spot" in the demo marked the stretch skipped in both the
wall and ground bands, where the real engine marks only the band the
aim step asked for. Each demo skip now keeps its bands, and the reply
test checks that skipping the ground leaves the wall seen as it was.

Base merge. 99d4414 merges t3/ios-mvf at e62be65. There was one conflict, in ScreenStatesUITests.largestTextStates. I kept the base's spotConfirm and spotConfirm-answered plus this branch's wallWalk-aim and wallWalk-slowDown. InstructionCard, DemoEngine, WallWalkScreen and GapRequestScreen merged cleanly. InstructionCard.Reply( is still built only in WallWalkScreen and GapRequestScreen. The base's exhaustive coachingHidesReply is unchanged. The body now says e62be65.

  • GitHub iOS build, green: https://github.com/SamGu-NRX/house-scanning-master/actions/runs/36313964096 (430 package tests; UI tests 21 run, 1 skipped, 0 failed, including testCardReplyFollowsTheStep, testRepliesAnswerTheirOwnCardAndTheWallCanJustEnd and testCantGetThereEndsWhereThePhoneIs).
  • Mac mini, same head: drift check, swift test (430 passed) and device build. I stopped its targeted UI run while it was waiting for the shared lock, because the GitHub run had already covered those tests.

Runtime evidence for the transition and rapid taps on a device is still open, as the body says. No review-clear claimed; that's Sam's call.

Addendum: the base moved while CI ran, and the PR showed as conflicting again. fd8f9b3 merges t3/ios-mvf at 4f1fb8e. The one conflict was again largestTextStates: I took the base's list (the ground-question states are gone, and the spot check adds -which, -ground, -cantMark and -unconfirmable) and kept wallWalk-aim and wallWalk-slowDown. The base's new commits don't touch the card, the reply or the demo's skip path.

With no request yet, the reply's task was nil, so the lock keyed on the
card's words, coaching included, and locked the reply again each time
coaching came or went. It now keys on the gap step's own words. The
InstructionCard note on coaching no longer says coaching always replaces
the words, which stops holding once coaching can ride along (#104).

Let walk skips override synthetic coverage.

The frozen wall-walk starts with reachedRight == 0.9. The right skip is therefore 1.0...4.3. After reachedRight advances to 4.3, state(at:left:right:lag:) marks cells through about 4.0 as .covered. The guards at lines 590–591 leave those cells covered instead of .skipped. The left walk has the same issue.

This affects DemoEngine, which powers the UI demo and UI tests. It does not affect production ScanEngine coverage. In the demo, the wall tape can show the inaccessible span as covered. Add an assertion for both walk directions.

Suggested fix
- private var skippedSpans: [(span: ClosedRange<Float>, bands: Set<CoverageBand>)] = []
+ private var skippedSpans: [(span: ClosedRange<Float>, bands: Set<CoverageBand>, preservesCovered: Bool)] = []

-                if skipped.bands.contains(.wall), wallCells[index] != .covered { wallCells[index] = .skipped }
-                if skipped.bands.contains(.ground), groundCells[index] != .covered { groundCells[index] = .skipped }
+                if skipped.bands.contains(.wall), (!skipped.preservesCovered || wallCells[index] != .covered) { wallCells[index] = .skipped }
+                if skipped.bands.contains(.ground), (!skipped.preservesCovered || groundCells[index] != .covered) { groundCells[index] = .skipped }

- skippedSpans.append((span: (aimed.s - 0.5)...(aimed.s + 0.5), bands: [aimed.band]))
+ skippedSpans.append((span: (aimed.s - 0.5)...(aimed.s + 0.5), bands: [aimed.band], preservesCovered: true))

- skippedSpans.append((span: (reachedRight + 0.1)...demoRightEnd, bands: Set(CoverageBand.allCases)))
+ skippedSpans.append((span: (reachedRight + 0.1)...demoRightEnd, bands: Set(CoverageBand.allCases), preservesCovered: false))

- skippedSpans.append((span: demoLeftEnd...(-reachedLeft - 0.1), bands: Set(CoverageBand.allCases)))
+ skippedSpans.append((span: demoLeftEnd...(-reachedLeft - 0.1), bands: Set(CoverageBand.allCases), preservesCovered: false))

Update DemoEngine’s skippedSpans handling so walk-generated skips override
synthetic .covered cells in both left and right walk directions, while
preserving existing covered cells for aimed skips. Track whether each skipped
span preserves coverage, set that behavior when appending each kind of span, and
use it when applying skips to wallCells and groundCells.

P1 Wall ending recorded as blocked

When someone chooses “The wall just ends,” this button calls the same answerWallEnd(turnsCorner: false) path as “Something blocks it.” That path records a .limit end, which the engine defines as a wall blocked by a fence, gate, or property line. The exported scan therefore records a wall that simply stops as an obstructed wall, losing the distinction this new answer asks the homeowner to make.

Caretaker check at 4183f61: not a defect. In the scene contract, limit means there is no more usable wall, not that something obstructs it (scene.schema.json:225-226); the only boundary kinds are limit and unexplored. Export writes the boundary kind, not an obstacle (ScanEngine+Export.swift:80-89), so a wall that just ends and a blocked wall both correctly stop at the marked point. The engine and packet comments that call limit a fence or gate are narrower than the contract; worth a wording fix.

You're right — limit is the contract's generic “no more usable wall” boundary, and export preserves that boundary kind rather than encoding an obstruction. Both answers therefore correctly terminate the wall at the marked point; my finding was incorrect. The narrower engine/packet comments are a wording/documentation cleanup, not a defect in this PR.

P2 Reply lock remains untested

tapReply waits until the button is enabled before every tap. The new interaction test therefore cannot catch a regression where a new card accepts taps during its first 600 ms—the behavior the lock is meant to prevent. A timed check that an early tap does nothing would cover that risk.

Caretaker check at 4183f61: same gap as 4115043347. Aiden explained in 5855720195 why a real 600 ms check would be flaky and proposed a demo-only longer lock. That test seam is waiting on Sam's decision. The production lock is in place (InstructionCard.swift:67, 98-104); only the regression test is missing.

That clarifies the status. The production lock is present; tapReply intentionally waits it out, so the current test does not verify the lock itself. I agree that adding a timing-sensitive 600 ms assertion without the proposed demo-only seam would be flaky. No further test change is warranted until Sam decides on that seam; this remains a test-coverage follow-up rather than a production defect.

Fact rows were appended after the site decision, so a dev pass could sit beside an unsure decision fact. not_evaluated rows still leave the decision alone.
