A developer switch, offered only on Debug and TestFlight installs, turns a scan into practice: the homeowner taps any wall, a sample meter is drawn there on the meter's anchor, and the close-up stores a photo of the sample (made-up maker, fake number) under the live frame's pose, which the real reader reads. Everything after the close-up runs as usual. Screens show a "Practice meter" badge and scan-stamp.json records practice: true. The switch lives in a developer sheet on the first screen, not a Settings.bundle: TestFlight and the App Store ship the same binary, so a settings bundle would show in App Store installs. StoreKit's AppTransaction environment decides at run time; no answer counts as the App Store. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Anchor the projection at the image origin
On every practice scan after the wall is set, this homography maps coordinates measured from the image's top-left corner directly into screen coordinates, but projectionEffect defaults to a .center anchor. SwiftUI therefore applies the transform around the 600×900 image center, so its corners no longer land on the projected wall quad and the sample meter can be shifted far from the tapped position or off-screen. Pass .topLeading as the anchor or incorporate the center-anchor translations into the matrix.

Carry the practice flag in the shared scan
When a practice scan is exported through “Share scan,” this flag is written only to scan-stamp.json beside the packet in the private scan directory. The share UI sends state.shareableScan, which is scan.zip, and writePacket builds that archive solely from the packet folder without copying this stamp. Consequently, downstream tooling receives a valid packet and scene that look like a real capture, allowing synthetic meter data to enter evaluations or datasets without a machine-readable practice marker. Include the flag in the exported artifact through a contract-valid metadata path.

Detach live depth from the synthetic close-up
On a LiDAR practice scan, copying the whole source frame here retains sensorDepth, and KeyframeStore.saveStill later writes that depth into the packet alongside the replacement JPEG. The depth was measured from the real wall image, while the stored pixels contain a large synthetic meter that was never present in the depth map, so packet consumers receive falsely pixel-aligned RGB and depth and can reconstruct inconsistent geometry. The original frame.depth can still be used by the already-created CloseUpView for coverage, but the saved practice-photo copy should clear sensorDepth.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
The flow test's captures never showed the sample: by the time each screen settled, the replay had moved past the frames that aim at the meter. The drawn meter is now an image element, "Sample meter", placed where it is drawn, and the test checks it sits mid-screen as soon as the close-up opens. The combined beta run at I am preparing a test-only fix in the isolated beta integration branch: open Details before restarting, reset the saved switch in teardown even after a failure, and explicitly disable Practice for ordinary screen fixtures. I will keep a dedicated Practice-on onboarding audit at default and largest text sizes, because the reported Dynamic Type failure for "Practice meter on" remains a product issue even after test isolation. Aiden's #155 already owns the general scroll-to-control repair, so I will reuse that change. No edits to this source branch or changes to the existing export findings. |

Test the rendered meter instead of its transparent proxy
When the visible meter is misplaced or fails to render, this lookup still succeeds because practiceMeter identifies the separate Color.clear element, whose frame is positioned directly from the calculated quad bounds and never receives the image's projectionEffect. The subsequent size and centering assertions therefore validate only the proxy geometry and remain green even for the previously reported center-anchor rendering shift; verify the rendered pixels or derive the accessibility frame from the transformed image instead.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
|
@AidenJohnston Current-head Codex review at Please retain that accessibility coverage and add or supply rendered-image evidence through the existing verification owner before treating it as proof of visual alignment. This does not validate the earlier center-anchor claim, which remains unsupported. Root owns current combined CI and screenshot review; no duplicate run is requested. The previously routed export marker and sensorDepth findings remain separate. |
Run 36310614834 found the drawn meter on the walk's first frame, pitched 20 degrees down, so it sat high on screen; only its horizontal place is checked now. That failure skipped turning the switch off, and the audit then flagged the button, which swapped its text for an icon at large sizes. The switch is now turned off in a teardown block, and the text wraps instead. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

@AidenJohnston New Practice runtime evidence from root's September 29 serial full UI run, based on main This is distinct from the earlier switch-on timeout and the existing ScanStamp missing-key decoding finding. It establishes a missing observed number in this run, not yet an OCR algorithm failure: capture/rendering, OCR, presentation timing and test observation remain possible causes. Please triage within your existing Practice capture/OCR ownership after root supplies the close-up attachment from the completed xcresult. Clear depth before saving the synthetic practice image.
On a practice scan, closeUpPhoto(_:) replaces frame.jpeg but retains frame.sensorDepth. saveStill persists that depth with the replacement JPEG through KeyframeStore.stored. The saved packet can therefore pair the synthetic practice image with live sensor depth from a different scene.
Set photo.sensorDepth to nil before saving the replacement image. The separate CloseUpView already receives frame.depth, so this does not remove the depth used for coverage.

Include practice metadata in the shared scan.zip.
writeScanStamp writes scan-stamp.json beside the packet. writePacket zips only store.packetFolder, and Share scan exposes that ZIP. A practice scan therefore loses its only "practice": true marker when shared.
Add scan-stamp.json as a top-level ZIP entry without changing the packet contents.

Caretaker check at 0e9ff0c: same issue as Codex 4114664863 and Greptile 4115037147, which Sam confirmed in 5854240191, and still unfixed. The flag is written beside the packet (ScanEngine+Stamp.swift:20-23), the share button sends only the ZIP (ShareScanButton.swift:12), and PacketWriter.swift:418 sets provenance to nil. A practice scan can also reach the HTTP result path (ScanEngine.swift:170-173). The contract-valid marker is Sam's decision under that request.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Agreed. The caretaker check confirms this is still unresolved: practice is only written to the adjacent scan-stamp.json, while sharing sends just the ZIP, PacketWriter emits no provenance marker, and the HTTP result path can bypass sharing entirely. The fix needs to carry the practice bit through the agreed contract-valid marker for both the shared packet and the HTTP result request; the marker’s exact schema/location is Sam’s decision under that request.

Older stamps cannot decode Earlier versions wrote stamps without a
practice field. The new non-optional property makes the synthesized decoder require that field, so decoding an older kept stamp fails. The initializer’s false default does not apply during decoding; accepting a missing field as false would preserve compatibility.

Caretaker check at 0e9ff0c: confirmed at the type level, and the same issue as 4115037151, still open after Sam's 5855228043. practice is a required Bool in the synthesized decoder (ScanStamp.swift:67, 94-96), so a stamp written before this PR throws keyNotFound. The only decoder caller today is a test (KeptScansTests.swift:77), so no app path breaks. The remaining choice is the one already asked for: decode a missing key as false and test a legacy payload, or record the break as intentional.

Agreed — this is a real compatibility break, even though the current app has no production decode path. ScanStamp is persisted data and Codable is part of the Kit API, so older scan-stamp.json files should continue to decode.
I recommend treating a missing practice key as false with a custom init(from:) (while still encoding the key for all newly written stamps), and adding a regression test that decodes a pre-change payload with no practice field and asserts stamp.practice == false. A present practice: null should remain an error; only an absent key represents a legacy stamp.
* Point-read capture runs and keep one coordinator. GET /result scanned the whole Modal Dict, and a second finish thread could miss the run and reset stages. Claim the run once, index run ids, and start the stage timeout when the worker enters so scale's 60s budget is not spent on hydration. * Export entered_at on the stage record schema. The stage timeout clock is stored on the job record, so the committed jobs schema has to include it. * Release orphan run claims and stop request-path Dict scans. A claim that dies before the run record is written can be taken over after 30 seconds by the next finalize or the sweeper, and the run row is stored before early-cost reads. Early blobs and legacy capture runs are point-read indexes. An exhausted stage writes a manual_review result.json. Pipeline and sweeper containers keep MODAL_APP_NAME so a throwaway app does not spawn on house-scanning. * Keep open-capture lists, amendment packets, and stage outputs intact. Per-principal open captures update under a lease and backfill on first read, so concurrent creates cannot drop an id. The packet cache is keyed by capture id and packet sha. Fresh workers overlay per-stage artifact blobs before hydration, and a test checks each stage body only reads artifacts its declared inputs cover. * Keep the early-index point-read test on the orchestrator side. Common tests cannot import the orchestrator. The no-scan check now lives with the early index. * Expect a dense amendment to hydrate only its declared parent inputs. Parent scene stays in storage. Poses the dense stage reads land under parent/ and do not replace the child's work directory. --------- Co-authored-by: hss-cloud-agent <hss-cloud-agent@users.noreply.github.com>
What changed
Sam's iPhone has LiDAR, and he wants to run the whole scan on it indoors, where there is no electric meter. Until now the flow stopped at the close-up, which only takes a photo once the reader finds a meter number in it.
A "Practice meter" switch now lets a scan run without a meter. It is off by default and only Debug and TestFlight installs offer it.
ScanEngine+Practice.swift).markMeteritself is unchanged, so the tap goes through the same raycast and refusals and becomes the meter's anchor. A drawn sample meter then appears there on every camera screen, projected fromstate.wall.meter, which follows the anchor (PracticeMeterOverlay.swift). The overlay sits inScanRootViewabove the camera image, and the fog and camera-overlay files are untouched.meter_close.jpgis a photo of the sample drawn at the camera image's own size. The live frame's pose, intrinsics and depth stay with it, and so does the view that coverage credits.VisionMeterNumberReaderthen reads that photo as it would a real one. The change toScanEngine.captureCloseUpis one line.scan-stamp.jsongains"practice": true|false. The packet and scene.json schemas are unchanged. The sample is drawn in code with Core Graphics and Core Text (
SampleMeterArt.swift). It shows a gray socket box with a dome, the made-up maker SAMPLEWORKS, "PRACTICE ONLY", a kWh display, a ratings line and a label reading "No. 12345678". HouseScanKit'sPracticeMeter.printedLinesholds that text, and the drawing prints exactly those strings. No real photo, dataset image, brand or logo is used. Why
A developer sheet, not a Settings.bundle. TestFlight and the App Store ship the same binary. A Settings.bundle is a file in that binary, so its switch would appear in the Settings app for App Store installs too. The sheet appears only when
PracticeMeter.isAvailableallows it, and a run-time check decides that. Debug builds count as development. Release builds ask StoreKit'sAppTransactionwhich server signed the install:.sandboxmeans TestFlight and.productionmeans the App Store. An unverified transaction or an error counts as.unknown, which offers nothing (DeveloperSettings.swift). A switch left on by TestFlight is ignored after the same install updates from the App Store.Brand. The reader runs its brand step on the sample and names no maker, because SAMPLEWORKS isn't a real one. The brand chip therefore stays hidden on practice scans. That keeps a fake name out of

It checks that the close-up shows 12345678, meaning the app's reader read the sample in the Simulator, and that every screen after the first has the badge. Then Start over clears the badge and the test turns the switch off.PracticeMeterUITests.testAppStoreInstallHasNoPracticeMeterlaunches with-simulateAppStore -practiceMeter YES.
